2010 Volkswagen Golf

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf replaces the Rabbit as this German automaker’s compact hatchback. Like the Rabbit, Golf comes in 2- and 4-door body styles. Each is offered in 2.5 and diesel-powered TDI trim levels. A 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine is standard on 2.5 models. TDI versions have a 140-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the 2.5 2-door.

Optional on that model and standard on the 4-door 2.5 is a 6-speed automatic. TDI versions come with a sport suspension and have either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual that behaves much like an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, and on 4-door models, rear-side airbags.

A tilt and telescopic steering wheel is standard. A sunroof, heated front seats, and a wireless cell-phone link are optional on all models. An uplevel audio system, xenon headlights, and a navigation system are TDI-exclusive options.

2010 Volkswagen CC

The 2010 Volkswagen CC is largely unchanged following its introduction for the 2009 model year. This premium-midsize car has a coupe-like roof line and seating for 4. CC is available in Sport, Luxury, VR6 Sport, and VR6 4Motion trims. Two engines are available. Standard on Sport and Luxury models is a 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. In Sport versions, it teams with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch automated-manual transmission that behaves like an automatic.

Luxury CCs come with the automated manual only. Powering VR6 Sport and VR6 4Motion versions is a 280-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 paired solely with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The automated-manual and automatic transmissions can be manually operated using the floor shifter in 4-cylinder models or via steering-wheel paddles in V6 versions.

Most CC models are front-wheel drive. The VR6 4Motion has all-wheel drive. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, and rear-side airbags. Leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof are standard on all but the Sport. A navigation system is optional on all but the Sport.

2010 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta undergoes a slight model re-organization while receiving freshened interior and exterior styling. This compact car is Volkswagen’s top seller in the US. It comes as a 4-door sedan or 4-door wagon called the SportWagen. Both body styles are available in S and SE trim levels. The sedan also comes as the SEL; the SEL wagon has been discontinued. The S, SE, and SEL are powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine.

Also offered as a sedan or wagon is the diesel TDI. These Jettas get a 140-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The diesel is emissions legal in all 50 states. The sporty GLI becomes the Wolfsburg Edition for 2010. It’s a sedan only and comes with a 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. S and SE versions are available with a 5-speed manual transmission. TDI and Wolfsburg Edition have a 6-speed manual. Standard on the SEL and available on all other Jettas except TDI is a 6-speed automatic.

TDI offers a 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission that behaves much like an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, front-side airbags, and rear-side airbags. Wolfsburg Editions have a sport suspension and specific trim. A navigation system, sunroof, and iPod adapter are among the available options. A panoramic sunroof is available on the wagon. Due later in model-year 2010 is the Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition, which includes specific exterior styling, 18-inch wheels, sport seats, and interior trim.

Volkswagen Sport Concept

The Concept BlueSport made its appearance at the car show in Detroit with a Flex Silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top. “It is the symbiosis of outstanding technology and timeless Volkswagen design that makes this car an exceptional sports car. Its styling is clear and is reduced to the essentials; the car body itself has a lean and linear structure”, explains Volkswagen chief designer Walter de Silva.

The interior shows finesse in details and conveys a high level of technological fascination. Immediately visible to the eye is the intuitive and easy to operate touchscreen. Perfectly adapted to the interior are the leather upholstered seats in lightweight construction with their single-piece seatbacks.

Behind the two sport seats of the 3.99 meter long Concept BlueSport, a 132 kW / 180 PS strong Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and downstream NOx storage catalytic converter delivers dynamic performance. A 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission – the most economical and agile transmission system in the world – transfers power to the rear wheels. In just 6.6 seconds the sports car is moving at 100 km/h; its top speed is 226 km/h. Also having a positive impact on the car’s low fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100 km and reduced emissions are two technologies that are part of the so-called Eco mode: an automatic start-stop system and energy regeneration. Together they propel the Concept BlueSport to an additional fuel savings of up to 0.2 liter per 100 kilometers in city driving.
