2009 Mercury Sable

The 2009 Mercury Sable is largely unchanged. This large sedan shares its basic design with the Ford Taurus and premium-large Lincoln MKS. It offers base and uplevel Premier models, each with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The sole powertrain teams a 263-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Standard on Premier and optional on the base are leather upholstery, heated front seats, and Ford’s Sync voice-activated control for cell phones and MP3 players.

Premier-exclusive options include a sunroof, navigation system, and chrome alloy wheels.

2010 Mercury Sable

The 2010 Mercury Sable has been discontinued, but examples of 2009 models may be available on dealer lots. Check out Consumer Guide’s review of the 2009 Mercury Sable for prices, ratings, specifications, and photos.

he Sable never did make inroads with customers despite of its unoffensive sheet metal, smooth ride, and spotless safety ratings, and sales are down 20% for the year through November. Schirmer stated that part of the reason for the Sable’s departure was that Ford was readying itself for lower industry volume levels, which makes multiple nameplates more difficult to justify. Dealers will need to order their last Sables by March 6th, and production comes to a halt on April 30. In a letter to dealers, Ford stated that it was discontinuing the Sable to “have a laser sharp focus on delivering the products that consumers want the most.” Fair enough.

We never quite understood why the Sable performed as poorly as it did. The Sable was no standard bearer, mind you, but even the Grand Marquis regularly kicked the Sable’s arse on the sales charts. And it’s been around since Jimmy Carter was president.

2009 Mercury Mountaineer

The 2009 Mercury Mountaineer adds a few new features. This midsize SUV is a retrimmed Ford Explorer, which means it uses traditional truck-type construction. It comes in Base and Premier trims. Both are available with a 210-hp 4.0-liter V6 engine. Premiers offer a 292-hp 4.6-liter V8. The V6 teams with a 5-speed automatic transmission; V8s use a 6-speed automatic. Maximum towing capacity is 7130 lb.

All Mountaineers are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive that does not include low-range gearing. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. A split-folding 3rd-row seat for seven-passenger capacity is standard on Premier, optional on Base. A power-folding feature is optional. The 2nd row has a 60/40 split bench with available reclining seatbacks.

Another available feature is Ford’s Sync voice-activated control for cell phones and MP3 players. Also available is Ford’s “capless” fuel filling system, which allows the vehicle to be filled without having to remove a gas cap. Satellite radio is now standard on Premier models, and traffic information is now available with the Navigation and Moon and Tune Package. Mountaineer’s performance and accommodations mirror those of similarly equipped Ford Explorers.
