2010 Dodge Nitro
The 2010 Dodge Nitro model lineup is revised. This midsize SUV uses traditional, truck-type construction and shares its basic design with the Jeep Liberty. Nitro comes in SE and SXT models. The SLT and R/T have been discontinued. All Nitros have a 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine that pairs with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the SXT is a 260-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 and a 5-speed automatic.
Ordering the 4.0 V6 also includes a sport suspension and 20-inch wheels. Newly standard on all is Chrysler’s Interactive Decel Fuel Shut Off, which is designed to save fuel by shutting off the gasoline supply during deceleration. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The 4WD system can’t be left engaged on dry pavement and does not include a low-range gear for off-road use. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain-side airbags. Among the available features are leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear-obstacle detection, and Chrysler’s Uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell-phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system.
2010 Dodge Journey
The 2010 Dodge Journey sees no major changes following its introduction for the 2009 model year. Journey is a crossover SUV that has standard 5-passenger seating. It can also seat up to 7 with the Flexible Seating Group that includes a 50/50 split 3rd-row seat. Three trim levels are offered. The base SE has front-wheel drive, a 173-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Uplevel SXT and R/T models have a 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, 6-speed automatic, and front- or all-wheel drive. SE models have 16-inch wheels. Front drive SXTs have 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension. All-wheel-drive SXTs and all R/Ts have 19-inch wheels and still-firmer suspension tuning. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags that cover all seating rows, and front-side airbags.
Storage features include an available flat-folding front-passenger seat with an under-cushion storage bin, storage bins in the 2nd-row foot well, and under-floor storage in the cargo area. Chrysler’s Uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system with real-time traffic information, is optional. A cooled glovebox is standard on all.
2010 Dodge Grand Caravan
The 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan lineup gains some new entertainment options. This minivan is built from the same design as Chrysler’s Town & Country. It comes in a single-length Grand Caravan body style in SE and SXT trim levels. Three V6 engines are offered. SE versions have a 175-horsepower 3.3-liter. SXTs use a 197-horsepower 3.8. A 251-horsepower 4.0 V6 is optional on SXT. The 3.3 teams with a 4-speed automatic transmission and can run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. The 3.8 and 4.0 engines use a 6-speed automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain-side airbags that cover all seating rows. Also available are blind-spot alert and a feature Chrysler calls “Rear Cross Path.” This system activates when the transmission is in reverse, and it detects any traffic moving toward the vehicle.
All Grand Caravans seat up to 7. A 60/40 split 3rd-row bench seat that folds into the floor is standard. A power-folding 3rd-row seat is available. The 2nd-row buckets can fold as part of Dodge’s Stow ‘n Go system, which is standard. With the seats raised, wells in the floor provide storage space. The SXT’s optional Flexible Seating Group includes Chrysler’s Swivel ‘n Go seating. Swivel ‘n Go allows the 2nd-row buckets to turn 180 degrees and face backward. This seating arrangement includes a removable table that mounts between the 2nd and 3rd rows.
The swiveling seats can be removed, but not folded into the cargo floor. Also available is Chrysler’s Uconnect multimedia suite, which can include a wireless cell-phone link, 30-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital music and picture files, and a navigation system. SXT models equipped with the 4.0-liter V6 engine have a sport suspension, leather upholstery, heated front and 2nd-row seats, and a power tailgate. Newly available on Grand Caravan is FLO TV, which allows pre-recorded and live TV broadcasts via terrestrial airwaves to play on the DVD screens.
2010 Dodge Caliber
The 2010 Dodge Caliber lineup loses its high-performance model but all models gain a redesigned interior. This compact hatchback comes in SE, SXT, and R/T trim levels. New for 2010 is the Mainstreet trim, which slots between the SE and SXT. The high-performance SRT4 has been discontinued. All use a 4-cylinder engine and come with front-wheel drive. SE, Mainstreet, and SXT have a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter engine.
The 148-horsepower 1.8-liter engine has also been dropped. R/T has a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. SE, SXT, and R/T have a standard 5-speed manual transmission and an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic. The CVT is standard on the Mainstreet.
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Available features include a fold-flat front passenger seat, ventilated glovebox, and wireless cell-phone link. Heated front seats are standard on the R/T and available on the Mainstreet and SXT. Leather upholstery is optional on the R/T. This report is based on evaluations of the 2009 Dodge Caliber.
