2009 Ford Ranger
The 2009 Ford Ranger loses one of its available engines. This compact pickup truck offers regular-cab and extended SuperCab models spanning four trim packages. SuperCabs are available with two rear fold-down jump seats and back-hinged rear-access doors. Regular cab models offer 6- and 7-foot cargo beds; SuperCabs use the 6-foot only.
The 2009 Ford Ranger is available with two engines: A 143-hp 2.3-liter 4-cylinder or a 207-hp 4.0-liter V6. Both are available with manual or automatic transmission. The 148-hp 3.0-liter V6 has been discontinued. Maximum towing capacity is 5980 lb. Rear-wheel drive is standard.
Ranger offers part-time 4-wheel drive that includes a low-range gear for off-roading, but should not be left engaged on dry pavement. ABS is standard. No side airbags are offered. A Class III trailer hitch is now standard on all models. Mazda’s B-Series trucks are retrimmed Rangers with a different pricing and features mix.
2009 Ford Focus
The 2009 Ford Focus coupe gets slightly freshened styling. Otherwise, this compact car lineup gets an available antiskid system as well as a revised model roster. Focus comes as a 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan. S, SE, SES, and new-for-2009 SEL trim levels are available. S and SEL are sedan only; the S coupe has been dropped. The only engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 140 hp in sedans and 143 hp in coupes. Both body styles offer a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, new-for-2009 antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Also available is Ford’s Sync. Sync provides voice control of certain cell phone and MP3 player functions. Sync is standard on SES and SEL and available on SE. Other available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, and remote engine start.
The 2009 Focus Coupe is equipped with a 2.0-liter, Duratec 20 dual-overhead-cam (DOHC), inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 143 horsepower when mated to a five-speed manual transmission and 140 horsepower when paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.
Also available is a super-clean, 130-horsepower Duratec 20E engine that qualifies Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). The 20E’s tailpipe emissions are cleaner than some hybrid gas-electric vehicles’. The Duratec 20 and 20E in Focus Coupe are mated to a five-speed manual transmission and achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy of 35 mpg.
Also setting the Focus coupe apart from other small cars is Ford’s industry-exclusive SYNC technology, which will be standard equipment on the SES series and optional on the SE. SYNC is a fully integrated in-vehicle, voice-activated communications and entertainment system for customers to use their Bluetooth cell phones and digital media players.
The 2009 Focus SES coupe features more horsepower and a throatier sound, thanks to a new sport-tuned exhaust. The SES coupe with a four-speed automatic transmission will have a new 4.2 final drive ratio to deliver quicker off-the-line acceleration for a faster 0-60 mph time. The 2009 Focus Coupe, available later this summer, will have an MSRP that starts at $15,920. All Focus models are built at the Wayne (Mich.) Assembly Plant.
2009 Ford Flex
The 2009 Ford Flex is an all-new midsize SUV. This boxy 4-door wagon shares some of its basic design with Ford’s Edge and Taurus X crossover SUVs and is available in three trim levels: base SE, midlevel SEL, and top-line Limited. All trim levels come with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on the SEL and Limited.
Flex is distinguished not only by its squared-off shape but by contrasting roof and body colors and use of exterior chrome accents. Flex seats either six or seven on three rows of seats. Power comes from a 262-hp 3.5-liter V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags.
Some of Flex’s other features include a rearview camera, power liftgate, voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic and weather updates, four-panel glass roof, and refrigerated center console. Other available features include Ford’s Sync, which is a voice-activated system that controls some cell phone and MP3 player functions, and a capless fuel filler.
2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
The 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac is largely unchanged. This crew-cab pickup truck is based on Ford’s Explorer SUV but has a 4×5-ft open cargo bed. Sport Trac seats five. XLT and Limited trims are available, both with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes a low-range gear for off-roading.
An optional Adrenalin Package for the 4WD Limited includes all-wheel drive. All Explorer Sport Trac models are available with a 210-hp 4.0-liter V6 engine or a 292-hp 4.6-liter V8. Both engines use an automatic transmission, a 5-speed on the V6 and a 6-speed on the V8. Maximum towing capacity is 5250 lb with the V6 and 7160 lb with the V8.
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. The cargo box has three in-floor covered bins with drain plugs. 2009 Ford Escape
The 2009 Ford Escape receives more powerful engines following its freshening for the 2008 model year. This compact SUV is a five-passenger, 4-door wagon that includes a liftgate with opening glass. It shares its basic design with the Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute. Four-cylinder models have a 171-hp 2.5-liter engine. V6 versions have a 240-hp 3.0-liter engine.
Compared to the 2008 Escape, that’s an increase of 18 hp for the 4-cylinder and 40 hp for the V6. The 4-cylinder engine is available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, the V6 with a 6-speed automatic only.
A gas/electric Hybrid model is available. It teams a 153-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor. It requires no plug-in charging. Hybrids have a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Towing capacity for 4-cylinder models is 1500 lb. V6 models can tow up to 3500 lb. The Escape is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Also available are leather upholstery, heated front seats, rear-obstacle detection, and a navigation system.

SE, SEL, and Limited trims are joined by the Sport model for 2009. All have a 265-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Sport models have standard 22-inch wheels, unique body panels, dual exhaust, specific seats, and unique interior trim.
Maximum towing capacity is 3500 lb. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Other available features include a power tailgate, power-folding rear seatbacks, 20-inch wheels, and the Vista Roof, a sliding-glass sunroof that covers both the front and rear seats.
Ford’s Sync, a software system that offers voice-activated control of cell phones and digital music players, is standard on Limited and Sport and optional on SEL. Note that Lincoln sells a luxury-trimmed version of the Edge called the MKX.
