2009 Ford Taurus

The 2009 Ford Taurus adds a new model to its lineup. This large sedan shares its basic design with the Mercury Sable and the Ford Taurus X SUV. Taurus offers SE, SEL, and Limited models with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. SE is new for 2009. The only engine is a 263-hp 3.5-liter V6. A 6-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. A navigation system is optional. DVD entertainment is no longer offered. Also available is Ford’s Sync, a voice-activated interface for cell phones and digital music players. Satellite radio is now standard on SEL and Limited models.

The 2009 Ford Taurus is a large-sized sedan model, designed and produced based on the Ford Taurus X and Mercury Sable SUV models. It is offered in three trim versions, the base model SE, SEL and high level Limited, all offered in either all wheel drive or in front wheel drive. New for 2009 model year is SE version. The major competitors to the sedan model include Mercury Sable, Toyota Avalon, Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300.

The only engine available to the 2009 Ford Taurus model include a 3.5 liter DOHC V6 version that delivers 263 hp of power at 6250 rpm and torque of 249 lb ft at 4500 rpm. The sole transmission available to the engine is 6-speed automatic. With the V6 engine, the current Taurus can achieve fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon in the city premises and 28 miles per gallon on the highway roads.

2009 Ford Mustang

The 2009 Ford Mustang sees no major changes as it awaits a major freshening due in calendar 2009 as a 2010 model. These sporty/performance coupes and convertibles are available with V6 and V8 engines in Deluxe and Premium trims. Base versions have a 210-hp 4.0-liter V6. GTs have a 300-hp 4.6-liter V8. Also returning is the Shelby GT500, which has a supercharged 500-hp 5.4-liter V8.

Also returning is the limited-edition Bullitt Package, which includes performance upgrades for the GT’s V8, resulting in 315 hp. Base and GT are available with manual or automatic transmission. Bullitt and GT500 are manual only. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, and front side airbags.

Mustang offers several appearance and trim packages depending on model, including a “Warriors in Pink” edition. Part of the proceeds from sales of this package benefit breast cancer research. The Bullitt Package includes unique interior and exterior trim, as well as a performance suspension and brakes. Newly offered on other Mustang models is a fixed glass roof panel.

2009 Ford Focus

The 2009 Ford Focus coupe gets slightly freshened styling. Otherwise, this compact car lineup gets an available antiskid system as well as a revised model roster. Focus comes as a 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan. S, SE, SES, and new-for-2009 SEL trim levels are available. S and SEL are sedan only; the S coupe has been dropped. The only engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 140 hp in sedans and 143 hp in coupes. Both body styles offer a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Available safety features include ABS, traction control, new-for-2009 antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Also available is Ford’s Sync. Sync provides voice control of certain cell phone and MP3 player functions. Sync is standard on SES and SEL and available on SE. Other available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, and remote engine start.

The 2009 Focus Coupe is equipped with a 2.0-liter, Duratec 20 dual-overhead-cam (DOHC), inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 143 horsepower when mated to a five-speed manual transmission and 140 horsepower when paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Also available is a super-clean, 130-horsepower Duratec 20E engine that qualifies Focus as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV). The 20E’s tailpipe emissions are cleaner than some hybrid gas-electric vehicles’. The Duratec 20 and 20E in Focus Coupe are mated to a five-speed manual transmission and achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy of 35 mpg.

Also setting the Focus coupe apart from other small cars is Ford’s industry-exclusive SYNC technology, which will be standard equipment on the SES series and optional on the SE. SYNC is a fully integrated in-vehicle, voice-activated communications and entertainment system for customers to use their Bluetooth cell phones and digital media players.

The 2009 Focus SES coupe features more horsepower and a throatier sound, thanks to a new sport-tuned exhaust. The SES coupe with a four-speed automatic transmission will have a new 4.2 final drive ratio to deliver quicker off-the-line acceleration for a faster 0-60 mph time. The 2009 Focus Coupe, available later this summer, will have an MSRP that starts at $15,920. All Focus models are built at the Wayne (Mich.) Assembly Plant.

2009 Ford Flex

The 2009 Ford Flex is an all-new midsize SUV. This boxy 4-door wagon shares some of its basic design with Ford’s Edge and Taurus X crossover SUVs and is available in three trim levels: base SE, midlevel SEL, and top-line Limited. All trim levels come with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on the SEL and Limited.

Flex is distinguished not only by its squared-off shape but by contrasting roof and body colors and use of exterior chrome accents. Flex seats either six or seven on three rows of seats. Power comes from a 262-hp 3.5-liter V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags.

Some of Flex’s other features include a rearview camera, power liftgate, voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic and weather updates, four-panel glass roof, and refrigerated center console. Other available features include Ford’s Sync, which is a voice-activated system that controls some cell phone and MP3 player functions, and a capless fuel filler.

2009 Ford F-150

The 2009 Ford F-150 is redesigned, gaining power, passenger room, and numerous new features. A 248-hp 4.6-liter V8 replaces a 202-hp V6 as the base engine and comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission. A 292-hp version of the 4.6 and a 310-hp 5.4 V8 are also available, both matched to a 6-speed automatic. The 5.4-liter V8 produces 320 hp when running on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. Available are rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive that cannot be left engaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing for off-roading. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags.

Three cab styles are again offered: regular cab, which deletes its former rear access doors; SuperCab extended cab, with rear-hinged back doors that don’t open independently of the fronts; and SuperCrew crew cab, which has four conventional doors and gains six inches in length, mostly benefiting rear-seat legroom. Cargo beds include 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8-foot Styleside beds and a 6.5-ft Flareside bed. Seven trim levels are offered: base XL, sporty STX, off-road-oriented FX4, midlevel XLT, uplevel King Ranch and Lariat, and new line-topping Platinum. Rumored for later in the 2009 model year is the Raptor, an off-road-oriented model powered by a 6.2-liter V8. Newly available features include a hideaway side step for access to the pickup bed, a tailgate step, a retractable cable lock to secure items in the bed, and a capless fuel filler.

New electronic devices include Ford’s Sync voice-activated cell phone and MP3 player control system, a voice-activated navigation system that includes real-time traffic information, a rearview camera, a built-in dashboard computer with available printer, a tool inventory system, and a vehicle tracking device for fleet users. Also new is an SFE (Superior Fuel Economy) package for 2WD models with the 292-hp 4.6 V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission. The package includes low-rolling-resistance tires and a different axle ratio for a 1-mpg increase in the EPA highway fuel economy rating. Maximum payload capacity is 3030 pounds on regular cabs, 2650 on SuperCabs, and 1760 on CrewCabs. Maximum towing capacity is 11,300 pounds on all models.

2009 Ford Explorer

The 2009 Ford Explorer is largely unchanged. This midsize SUV uses a traditional, truck-type design. It offers rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive that can be left engaged on dry pavement and has a low-range gear for off-roading. Trim levels include XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. All are available with a 210-hp 4.0-liter V6 engine or a 292-hp 4.6-liter V8.

V6 models have a 5-speed automatic transmission; V8s have a 6-speed automatic. Maximum towing capacity is 5375 lb for the V6 and 7285 lb for the V8. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Offered on all is a 3rd-row seat for seven-passenger capacity; it’s available with a power-folding feature.

Explorer’s capless fueling system allows owners to fill their fuel tanks without having to remove a gas cap. Ford’s Sync voice-activated cell phone and MP3 player control system is available. The available navigation system includes real-time traffic alerts, weather, gas prices, sports, and movie information. Ford retrims the Explorer for sale as the Mercury Mountaineer.

2009 Ford Expedition

The 2009 Ford Expedition adds more power and a few new features. This is Ford’s largest SUV and is available in regular length as well as the Expedition EL, which is 12 inches longer in wheelbase and about 15 inches longer overall. Both versions seat up to eight. The sole powertrain for all models is a 310-hp 5.4-liter V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This represents an increase of 10 hp over 2008 Expeditions.

All 2009 models now have the ability to run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. Maximum towing capacity is 9200 lb. Rear-wheel drive is standard. Available is a full-time 4-wheel-drive system that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes a low-range gear for off-roading. XLT, Eddie Bauer, King Ranch, and Limited trim levels are offered. Available safety equipment includes ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. New for 2009 is Ford’s Sync, which is a voice-activated interface for cell phones and digital music players.

The available navigation system now has real-time traffic, weather, and entertainment information. Heated second-row seats are standard on the Limited and King Ranch. Available on XLT and standard on Eddie Bauer, Limited, and King Ranch is a power-folding 3rd-row seat. Ford’s new SOS Post-Crash Alert, which flashes the turn signals and honks the horn to alert first responders to the vehicle’s location, is also available. Note that the Lincoln Navigator is a luxury version of Expedition with different styling, features, and pricing.
