2008 Mazda RX-8

The 2008 model-year edition continues to push the parameters of the sports car §egmènt, this year wîth only minor updates. New for 2007, the Grand Touring model offers available Sand leather-trimmed seats, while the Touring and the Grand Touring models add a standard 6-disc CD changer. Two new exterior colors are available on all 2007 RX-8 models – Crystal White Pearl and Stormy Blue Mica. Since its creation, the RX-8 has continued to win rave reviews from the automotive press,’ said Tetsu Nakazawa, RX-8 vehicle line manager. ‘The RX-8 is a sports car built for the real world; ideal for zooming around a track, but equally suitable for taking the kids to soccer practice. It is a true sports car that can pull double duty.

The 2008 Mazda RX-8 is available as either a 232-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed manual transmission, or a 212-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed automatic wîth §teering- wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a Formula 1-style driving experience (the change in horsepower ratings from 2006 is due to the new SAE rating standards). Both automatic and manual transmission cars come equipped wîth power windows, mirrors and door locks, cruise control and an AM/FM/CD audio system wîth six speakers.

Price: $26,435 – 32,070.
Invoice: $24,455 – 29,655.

ENGINE

The lifeline of this powerfully agile sports car rests underneath the hood thanks to its advanced RENESIS ( Rotary Engine ge nesis – or rebirth of the rotary engine) engine. The Mazda RX-8 remains the only mass produced rotary-powered passenger car in the world. By turning a triangular rotor in a cocoon-shaped combustion chamber, the RX-8′s rotary engine efficiently performs the four processes of intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. The RENESIS engine is remarkably smooth and high revving — all the way to 9,000 rpm (7,500 rpm on Sport A/T–equipped models) — and offers a smaller engine footprint than traditional internal combustion engines (some 60 percent smaller and lighter than a comparably powered V-6, and 40 percent smaller and lighter than a four-cylinder). In fact, the packaging and styling that define the RX-8 would not have been possible had Mazda engineers chosen a conventional piston engine.

Improving upon 40 years of rotary designs, the RENESIS engine features side intake and exhaust ports wîth nearly 30 percent more intake area and twice as much exhaust area than its predecessors. The efficiencies gained through larger intake and exhaust ports exclude the need for forced induction. The RX-8′s normally aspirated 1.3-liter engine might appear diminutive to the untrained eye when compared to large-displacement V-8s or heavyweight V-10s or V-12s. However, through the incredible efficiencies of a rotary powerplant, an advanced three-stage intake system and an electronic throttle, the RENESIS engine delivers smooth, linear power on a grand scale. The 2007 RX-8 does not sacrifice emissions for power, though. Through improvements to the port design, overlap between the intake and exhaust ports has been eliminated, significantly reducing exhaust emissions, improving fuel economy and allowing the car to meet the strict Tier2 Bin 5 Federal emissions classification. The effort made by Mazda engineers to improve emissions is a prime example of the concern for environmental impact maintained throughout the development process.

By placing the powerplant low and far back in the engine bay, in what Mazda calls an advanced front-midship layout, the center of gravity is lowered, which in turn improves vehicle balance. In addition, the fuel tank is placed ahead of the rear axle, and all seating is within the wheelbase and track of the car. Combined, these factors contribute to a perfect 50/50 vehicle weight distribution, low yaw-inertia movement and superb handling characteristics. With such excellent balance, it is little wonder the RX-8 feels right at home on the twists and turns of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, negotiating a tight freeway onramp or in stop-and-go traffic.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING

The RX-8 uses an aluminum double-wishbone front suspension, reducing unsprung weight over the use of steel components. By mounting the upper and lower arms on a highly rigid sub-frame, the long arms ensure linear alignment changes throughout the jounce and rebound of the front wheels. All wheels receive mono-tube gas-filled shock absorbers designed wîth large-diameter internal pistons and valving, which offer excellent road feedback and a smooth ride.

An electric rack-and-pinion power-§teering system transmits just the right amount of road information back to the driver. Mazda engineers have chosen to pursue their own path by using an electric motor for §teering assistance rather than a conventional power-§teering pump. The electric motor provides additional assistance at low speeds to ease parking and reduces §teering assistance at higher speeds to provide greater road feel, responsiveness and feedback. And, in keeping wîth the rest of the development on RX-8, it is far lighter and easier to package than a conventional power-§teering rack.

STYLING

The RX-8′s unique ‘freestyle’ four-door design is proof that a true sports car does not need to sacrifice space or convenience for performance. The advanced design of the rear-hinged rear doors, provides a large door opening, allowing adult-sized passengers to easily enter and exit the vehicle. This design is also advantageous when securing a baby or a small child in the back seat. With a spacious rear seat area providing ample passenger room for four full-size adults, and enough trunk space for a weekend’s worth of luggage, this sports car proves its versatility.

Taut muscular lines give RX-8 the liberating look of an athlete in motion. The muscular styling maintains classic sports car proportions while adding a Zoom-Zoom edge that is unmistakably Mazda. Integrated throughout the exterior is the unique triangular rotor design, which clearly can be seen in the front fascia, head lamps, hood and rear bumper valence. The RX-8′s exterior styling presents a genuine sports car form, while the interior boasts a comfortable and intelligently designed cabin. An extremely low cabin floor allows the seats to be mounted low in the chassis, which, along wîth a low instrument cluster and hood, enhance driver visibility. Mazda designers concentrated on the shape of the front seat backs and the rear seat cushions to ensure adequate rear-seat knee room. Front seat slide-rails are positioned to allow maximum leg room for rear-seat passengers.

The rotary design element is incorporated through the interior of the RX-8 in creative ways, appearing in the seats, center console, shift knob and emergency brake. The stylish cabin also evokes a sense of luxury and high-end quality. Mazda’s design team examined every aspect and component of the interior and has created an elegant, driver-centric atmosphere. Through the use of advanced ergonomic research, Mazda engineers established improper seating posture to be a cause of driver fatigue and built in optimum support in the front seats to help offset discomfort. In addition, the soft blue lighting used in the RX-8′s instrument cluster was found to reduce eye fatigue and strain.

SAFETY

When designing the RX-8, safety was given as much of a priority as was performance. For Mazda, the safety process incorporates both accident avoidance and accident protection. In effect, this approach to safety means the RX-8 can help the driver avoid various dangers and protect occupants in the unfortunate event of a collision. In rollover tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the RX-8 achieved an impressive five-star rating. Mazda engineers integrated numerous active and passive safety elements throughout the car. Active safety features, which require input from the driver, include the use of large ABS-equipped disc brakes on all wheels as well as precise §teering and suspension systems. Dynamic Stability Control (standard on manual transmission cars wîth Sport Package, optional on RX-8s wîth automatic transmissions) delivers a superior level of handling that can be disabled when driving and road conditions allow safe operation.

Passive systems, or those that take effect automatically without the driver’s involvement, also are present throughout the RX-8. Despite the absence of a center B-pillar, the RX-8 has an exceptionally rigid body, accomplished through the use of a series of locking pins, which hold the doors together and bind each door directly into the roof and floor. Integrating the frame components helps dissipate crash energy through the vehicle’s structure.

Other standard passive systems on the RX-8 include front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags. Additionally, the front end and engine bay have ample crumple zones, the front seats are designed to reduce whiplash injuries, the brake pedal is designed to break away in the event of a collision of sufficient force to protect feet and legs and all four seating positions are fitted wîth three-point seatbelts. Even pedestrian protection was considered, as the RX-8 is fitted wîth Mazda’s ‘shock-cone’ hood design that yields more to the impact of a pedestrian onto the hood than a standard design, yet is strong enough to not deform in normal use.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu

The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu made its global debut today, wîth simultaneous introductions in the Únited States and China – two of the nearly 100 countries on six continents where it will be sold. Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan will provide customers from Shanghai to New York and Sydney to Sao Paulo wîth expressive design, advanced technologies, ride performance and fuel-efficient powertrains.

‘The current Malibu has left an award-winning impression and changed the way people think about Chevrolet. It redefined what an American midsize car could be,’ said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. ‘This all-new Malibu delivers on the intangibles of today’s Malibu but gives customers even more: more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, craftsmanship, and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans.’

Price: $21,995 – 30,085.
Invoice: $21,005 – 28,430.

Exterior

The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan §egmènt,’ said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director for GM exterior design and Chevrolet Brand Champion. A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive appearance. The new Malibu has a 4.5-inch (114 mm) shorter wheelbase and 62-inch (1,574 mm) front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches (51 mm) wider than the model it replaces.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels. The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the §egmènt, wîth a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.

Malibu also has electronically controlled and integrated active aero shutters (select models in North American markets) to improve aerodynamics and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design. Malibu’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aerodynamic performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. Whether the shutter is open or closed depends on engine coolant temperature and speed – for example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when less engine cooling is required.

Interior

The new Malibu interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving, featuring an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment. The increased width of the new Malibu means a more spacious cabin. Compared to the previous model, it has nearly 4 cubic feet (113 L) of additional interior volume, along wîth more shoulder and hip room.

The Malibu interior features metallic, chrome or wood accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack, around the instrument cluster and on doors and the §teering wheel. Soft, ice blue ambient lighting reflects off of and complements chrome accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel and in storage pockets. Ice blue lighting on the center stack dials, exposed ice blue French contrast stitching, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to Malibu’s interior refinement.

The Malibu also has a number of storage areas, including a radio face that articulates up and down to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind its seven-inch touch-screen radio display – a Ú.S. first in a midsize car. Malibu will also offer a full range of the latest infotainment options, including new color radio systems and an available navigation system.

Malibu will include Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package at launch. It builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®. MyLink integrates wireless connectivity through Bluetooth to enable hands-free use of selected smart phone apps while the device remains safely stowed. MyLink features a high-resolution, full-color touch screen display designed to manage the number of steps required to complete a task. MyLink also adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smart phones, building on the Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevrolet vehicles.

2008 Volvo C70

The 2008 Volvo C70 sees a slight horsepower increase, up from 218 to 227. The car’s interior also gets a few upgrades, with new wood accents, a leather steering wheel and gearshift knob, and redesigned air vents.

Introduction

The Volvo C70 got its start in the late 1990s and was one of the first models to break out of the Swedish brand’s stodgy image and into territory occupied by truly stylish cars with sleek, sensuous lines. Initially available as both a convertible and a coupe, the C70′s lineup was soon narrowed to include just a convertible. Unfortunately, the car’s charm was marred by the fact that its antiquated underpinnings made it a lot less fun to drive than similarly priced competitors. Volvo placed the C70 on a brief hiatus and then redesigned it from top to bottom for 2006.

With the Volvo C70′s overhaul came a new body structure based on the current S40 sedan, handsome exterior styling and the addition of a three-piece retractable roof that elegantly assembles itself with the grace of an Arabian veil dancer. Once the hardtop is in place, this convertible in essence becomes a coupe, tightly sealed against the elements. Unlike some other convertibles, the Volvo C70 doesn’t confine, with ample top-up headroom for those who stand north of 6 feet. Visibility is another pleasant surprise, with lean rear pillars offering good sight lines for reversing drivers. The 2008 Volvo C70 is just as agreeable with the top down, thanks to minimal wind buffeting. It’s also one of the safest convertibles on the market, as it’s equipped with side curtain airbags that deploy when the top is lowered. To accomplish this feat, Volvo mounted the airbags in the doors.

But alas, all isn’t perfect in Volvo C70 Land. Though the car elicits more warm sparks than its predecessor, it’s hampered by its unimpressive turbocharged inline-5. Handling is competent but hardly energetic. If pep and performance rank high on your list, you’ll want to shift your attention to the more pleasurable (though more expensive) BMW 3 Series convertible. Volkswagen’s Eos is another interesting alternative, given its very similar demeanor and lower price. Still, with its noteworthy trunk space and outstanding safety features, the 2008 Volvo C70 excels as a reasonably family-friendly choice for those in search of a sexy drop top that doesn’t sacrifice versatility.

Price: $39,240 – 39,240.
Invoice: $36,885 – 36,885.

Driving Impressions

Acceleration is hardly mind-blowing, but the 2008 Volvo C70′s turbocharged engine offers enough low-end torque to efficiently hustle the car from a stop. On the move, the car’s body’s structure is rigid and stays flex-free when driven over bumps. The suspension is softly tuned, and the easy-to-drive C70 makes for a pleasing highway or boulevard-cruising companion. But pushed harder, the C70 is an unwilling partner due to uninspiring handling dynamics, numb steering and noticeable brake fade after miles of fast driving.

Interior Design and Special Features

Activate the retractable roof and the C70′s dual-hinged trunk lid opens in a reverse motion and the roof pieces arc backward and stack inside the trunk. Overall, the process is rather seamless, though it does take a longish 30 seconds to complete. With the top up, there are a generous 12.8 cubic feet available for your gear. Top down, you’re left with 6 cubic feet of trunk volume, however.

Most people will find the C70′s front seats extremely comfortable. Legroom is tight for those in the rear, but it should be adequate for children and smaller adults. Fluid and graceful Swedish good looks abound in the C70′s cabin; its lines are free of clutter, and highlights include a center stack that undulates with a ribbon’s clean grace. Still, the C70 has a fair amount of cheap-looking plastics — troubling for a car in this price range.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2008 Volvo C70 is a luxury convertible with a retractable hardtop design. Volvo keeps things simple by offering just one trim level, the T5. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, a power-retractable hardtop, cloth upholstery, eight-way power front seats (with driver memory), automatic dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, heated outside mirrors and an eight-speaker audio system with a six-CD changer and auxiliary audio input.

Buyers can beef up the C70′s content with a quartet of packages. Choose the Premium Package for goodies like leather seats, a compass and HomeLink. The Climate Package gives you heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and headlamp washers. Pick the Convenience Package and get rear park assist, keyless start, power retractable side mirrors, a cabin air filtration system and Volvo’s blind spot information system (BLIS) — with BLIS, indicator lights issue a warning if a vehicle enters your blind spot. Make the most of your music by outfitting your C70 with the Dynaudio Package; it offers a 14-speaker Dolby ProLogic II premium sound system with 910 watts and two subwoofers. Stand-alone options include a navigation system, 18-inch wheels, satellite radio and bi-HID xenon headlights.

Powertrains and Performance

Powering the C70 is a turbocharged, 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine. It’s good for 227 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque, with power sent to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. Those who’d rather not shift their own gears can go for the optional five-speed automatic. With a manual transmission, the C70 gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Automatic-equipped C70s get an 18/26 mpg rating.

Safety

This being a Volvo, safety is paramount. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, traction control and stability control. Side airbags are also provided, along with special door-mounted, head-protecting side curtain airbags; these are capable of protecting front occupants even when the top is down. In the event of a rollover accident, rollover bars mounted behind the seats automatically deploy for maximum safety. Anti-whiplash seats are also offered as standard equipment. Volvo’s BLIS is available as an option.

Quest also excels in terms of space management, wîth its long 124.0-inch wheelbase, 77.6-inch width and 67.3-inch front and rear track providing an overall interior volume of 211.9 cubic feet, one of the largest interior volumes of any front-wheel drive minivan. Quest’s sliding side door openings measure 33.8 inches, one of the longest in class, while the ample length and width allow for carrying large items on the floor wîth the rear door closed.

The 2008 Quest continues to advance the concept of flexibility and spontaneity. Special attention is paid to front seat dimensions, wîth large 1st row shoulder room. The seats themselves are a ‘furniture-style’ design, reinforcing the interior design concept of an urban loft. The Fold-Away 2nd and 3rd row seats, wîth the 3rd row folding flat, do not require the owner to remove the seats in order to create a large, fully usable storage area. The 2nd row seats fold down and drop forward to the floor. The 3rd row seat easily folds into a storage well in the floor. In addition, the 3rd row seat design includes integrated headrests that fold down wîth the simple pull of a strap. The rear seat then moves forward and down – a simple three-step movement that, aided by a spring assist, can be completed wîth one hand.

The sliding side doors and rear door are available wîth remote power operation for added convenience, wîth the switch for the automatic closing power rear door located on the upper left D-pillar for ease of use. Another unique highlight of the Quest interior is the SkyView™ glass-paneled roof, standard on 3.5 SE models and available on 3.5 SL models, which utilizes roof-mounted glass panels for the 2nd and 3rd rows that (along wîth the front sunroof) help enhance the use of natural light throughout the vehicle. A full-length rear overhead console is available wîth the SkyView glass-paneled roof. It creates aircraft-like interior comfort zones wîth personal reading lamps and air vents. The rear overhead console houses the Quest’s available DVD Mobile Entertainment System’s single or dual 8.0-inch fold-down color display screens, and includes rear HVAC controls.

Exterior Design

Quest’s breakthrough exterior addresses consumer concerns about traditional minivans’ conservative imagery. The contemporary body imparts a look of high quality and is marked by an arching roofline that transitions seamlessly off of the A-pillar, a strong shoulder that adds dimension to the body sides, well-defined wheel forms that have a minimal gap wîth the tire sidewalls and a fluid gesture in the beltline that starts low off of the headlights and kicks up toward the rear of the vehicle.

The flowing Nissan-signature grille and angular front bumper fascia offer a bold, aggressive stance from the front. Quest’s door handles are chrome, wîth other chrome accents enhancing the clean, modern look of the vehicle. The roof rack features a satin-look finish. One new exterior color is offered for 2008 – Lakeshore Slate – among seven total colors.

Safety and Security

Quest was developed wîth a strong focus on both active safety – through the responsive engine, suspension and braking technologies – and passive safety through a comprehensive set of passive restraint systems. For 2008, front seat side-impact supplemental airbags are now standard on all four Quest models. Other standard Quest safety equipment includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), which utilizes crash zone sensor and advanced occupant weight sensing capability to control front passenger air bag deployment; head curtain supplemental air bags to help protect 1st, 2nd and 3rd row outboard occupants in side-impact collisions; 3-point seat belts and height-adjustable head restraints for all seating positions; and front seat Active Head Restraints.

Also available is a RearView Monitor system (standard on 3.5 SE and 3.5 SL) that utilizes a small camera mounted near the rear license plate that projects a view of what’s directly behind the vehicle to the Vehicle Information Center display screen. The system is activated any time reverse gear is engaged and helps enhance the driver’s rearward view. Quest also includes a standard Rear Sonar System (standard on 3.5 SL and 3.5 SE models, newly available on 3.5 S model), which provides an audible beep when approaching solid objects while backing up.

2008 Cadillac Escalade

Having earned a position as the image and sales leader among large luxury SÚVs, Cadillac Escalade enters 2008 lòòking to extend its considerable momentum. With three body styles – Escalade, and the extended length Escalade ESV and EXT luxury sport-utility truck – Cadillac offers the widest array of models in the §egmènt. This broad lineup will expand even further when the Escalade Platinum edition and the Escalade Hybrid join the family later in 2008.

Completely redesigned for 2007, the ’08 Escalades feature integrated powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems that deliver the most powerful, efficient luxury SÚVs in the §egmènt, led by a 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine wîth variable valve timing technology delivering 403 horsepower (301 kW)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm).* The Escalade and Escalade ESV are available in AWD and 2WD configurations (2WD is new to Escalade ESV for ’08), while the Escalade EXT sport-utility truck features standard, full-time AWD.

Escalade sports a sleek, clean and athletic form wîth improved aerodynamics. It is instantly identifiable as a Cadillac and incorporates styling cues from Cadillac’s landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents. It was Escalade that first introduced the exclusive Platinum series to Cadillac as a limited-edition model expressing the full extent of the brand’s luxury attributes. Details on the 2008 Escalade Platinum will be announced later in 2007.

Luxury and advanced technology also converge in the Escalade Hybrid, to be introduced in the 2008 calendar year. The Escalade Hybrid will feature GM’s two-mode hybrid propulsion system combining gas and electric engines for significant fuel economy improvements, while maintaining the traditional capabilities of a full-size SÚV. While conventional full hybrid systems offer only one electric mode that is used during low-speed driving, GM is teaming up wîth DaimlerChrysler and BMW Group to co-develop the patented two-mode hybrid system. The technology is based on GM’s highly successful hybrid system in use on hundreds of GM transit buses across North America .

Price: $54,890 – 81,595.
Invoice: $50,770 – 75,475.

The first mode of the system is for low speed and light loads. In this mode, the hybrid system can operate wîth electric power only, engine power only and any combination of engine and electric power. When the first mode operates as electric only, fuel consumption is reduced in heavy stop-and-go traffic by shutting off the engine for extended periods of time and moving exclusively under electric power at low speeds.

The second mode is primarily used at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode integrates sophisticated electronic controls, such as Active Fuel Management, cam phasing and late-intake valve closure, to allow even more efficient engine operation wîth electric motors less than half the size of a traditional ‘one-mode’ hybrid system. Full eight-cylinder engine power is provided when conditions demand it, such as passing, towing or climbing a steep grade.

Design

Details in elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards enhance Escalade’s flowing design, enabling a look that is both aggressive and elegant. The sleek, toned look includes a windshield angle of 57 degrees, which flows gracefully into the roofline. This also improves aerodynamic performance to a §egmènt-best 0.363 coefficient of drag, which helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise. The warm and inviting interior features a premium and distinct layout not shared by other GM full-size SÚVs. The cabin, which comes in two colors, Ebony and Cashmere, also is spacious, wîth an instrument panel that is lower and moved forward in the vehicle.

The vehicle features a unique instrument panel; instrumentation gauges wîth white needles and blue light inlays wîth continuously lit, white-LED backlighting; Nuance leather-covered seats; leather-covered door trim and center console; fabric-covered interior pillars; and an available heated §teering wheel. A power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes wîth the touch of a button also is standard. Escalade delivers convenience wîth an industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat, and a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes wîth the touch of a button. Escalade also includes an available eight-inch touch-screen navigation system, as well as a DVD system wîth a large, eight-inch flip-down screen. A §egmènt-first Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system is integrated into a family of radios that play DVD audio/video, CD audio/video, MP3s and XM Satellite Radio.

Power

A 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (301 kW)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* is exclusive to the Escalade family. This all-aluminum engine uses v ariable valve timing (VVT) to optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique, dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead-valve engine. A Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched wîth the 6.2L engine. One of the industry’s most advanced automatics, the 6L80 features clutch-to-clutch shifting and has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy.

A strong frame and chassis support the Escalade’s robust powertrain and enable exceptional responsiveness and ride and handling smoothness. Large, four-wheel disc brakes and a Bosch ABS system help ensure braking performance. ABS works wîth the StabiliTrak stability control system’s rollover mitigation technology. This software algorithm technology uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle ‘tip-up’ and apply appropriate brake force to help prevent such events.

Safe and Sound

Escalade is designed to be among the industry’s safest and most secure vehicles, wîth numerous safety systems and crash-avoidance technologies. Occupant protection features include head curtain side air bags wîth rollover protection for all seating rows and an industry-first 360-degree front safety belt pretensioner activation system. In keeping wîth Cadillac’s reputation for advanced technology, OnStar-equipped Escalade models feature Generation 7 technology and OnStar’s Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar.

Turn-by-Turn allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers’ vehicles through their OnStar system. These audio directions automatically play through the vehicle’s stereo as needed, triggered by the OnStar system’s GPS capabilities. This enables drivers to be led to their destination while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

2012 Audi R8

The Audi R8 is available as both a Coupe and Spyder, wîth each style offering two levels of power – a 4.2-liter FSI® V8 or a 5.2-liter FSI V10. The V8 generates 430 hp at 7,900 rpm, wîth 316 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 – 6,000 rpm, while the 5.2 liter achieves 525 hp at 8,000 rpm wîth 391 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. Either version can be paired wîth a manual or automatic R tronic® transmission. The R tronic provides extremely quick shifting and can be controlled by paddle shifters on the §teering wheel. Audi launch control also is featured wîth the R tronic, allowing for faster starts by controlling slip. The quattro® all-wheel-drive system is standard and ensures additional grip for all driving situations and surfaces.

The ASF® technology makes the R8 relatively lightweight while maintaining an extremely rigid frame to enhance performance. The unmistakable exterior design, wîth its low stance and forward cockpit, contribute to the dynamic look of the R8. A fully enclosed diffuser underbody minimizes lift, and the automatically-deployed rear spoiler ensures that sufficient downforce is deployed. Beautifully designed and prominent sideblades incorporate the air intakes that draw attention to the mid-engine design of the coupe. The engine packaging is meticulously designed to make the view through the glass covered coupe hatch a delight, while aluminum optic engine cooling vents adorn the Spyder.

The R8 Spyder delivers a holistic exterior design wîth integrated side air intakes that replace the sideblades in order to accommodate the soft top roof. The soft top opens and closes neatly in 19 seconds at up to speeds of 31 mph. The soft top enables tighter packaging when folded and lowers the center of gravity versus a hard top convertible design. The cover for the top is made of a carbon fiber composite, further reducing weight, while triple layer insulation minimizes cabin noise and insulates against cold and heat. The heated rear glass window is integrated into the bulkhead and can be raised and lowered via a switch. An aluminum optic A-pillar and windshield surround add a unique design element visible primarily when the top is down.

The interior of the R8 fully complements the exterior. Sleek and artful, the most prominent feature of the R8 interior is the monoposto design that features a large arch sweeping around the dashboard. With the wheels pushed to far corners of the R8, its maximized wheelbase provides a comparatively generous amount of interior space. Seats are constructed of either leather / Alcantara® for the 4.2 or Nappa leather in the 5.2. Thermal-resistant leather used for seats in the Spyder lowers the surface temperature by up to 68 degrees on hot, sunny days. Available leather options abound, allowing owners to customize the R8 to their personal tastes. Other personalization is available wîth the selection of carbon fiber Sigma interior inlays, door sills and available illuminated door sill inserts displaying the R8 model insignia.

Price: $114,200 – 196,800.
Invoice: $106,206 – 183,024.

The R8 features advanced technologies for which Audi has become known, including available Audi MMI®, available Audi MMI Navigation plus, and an available Bang & Olufsen® Sound System. The Bluetooth® microphone of the Spyder is integrated into the seatbelt to minimize wind noise while speaking via the Bluetooth system.ASF construction increases stability and provides an extremely rigid body shell, plus specially constructed front and rear energy absorbing zones provide protection in the event of a collision. ESC contributes to stability, and vehicle occupants are protected by a full complement of air bags, including front, seat and chest side, and knee airbags. A tire pressure monitoring system ensures that owners are warned if pressure falls below a preset threshold.

Body and Interior

The forward-thrust cockpit and the engine compartment behind it are key to the proportions of the R8. Large wheel wells and hungry air inlets visualize its potential, while the upright sideblade structures the flank. LED headlights are standard in ten-cylinder R8 models and available as an option for the eight-cylinder version. The body of the R8 is largely hand-built at the craft-scale production shop at the Neckarsulm site. Featuring an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF), it tips the scales at just 210 kilograms (462.97 lb) – ultra-lightweight construction in the extreme. The fully-enclosed diffuser underbody and the rear spoiler that slides out automatically help ensure that the R8 generates downforce at high speeds.

The key element of the interior is the monoposto, a large arc sweeping around the dashboard instruments. The relatively long wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft) allows for generous interior space. There is space for two golf bags behind the seats, and the luggage compartment under the front hatch offers an additional 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) of storage capacity. The R8 5.2 FSI quattro comes standard wîth Fine Nappa leather appointments, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the navigation system plus. The optional bucket seats from the Audi exclusive range exude concentrated racing style.

Drive

Two high-tech engines are available for the Audi R8. Both reflect the wealth of expertise which helped to fuel Audi’s numerous racing triumphs. The V8 and the V10 combine FSI gasoline direct injection wîth dry sump lubrication and a high-revving concept. Both captivate wîth their power, their responsiveness and their musical sound. The eight-cylinder unit launches the R8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.6 seconds en route to a top speed of 302 km/h (187.65 mph). The V10 is a touch faster, wîth a time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph).

Engine

The engines’ power flows to either a six-speed manual transmission or the R tronic controlled in this case via either a joystick on the center console or paddles on the §teering wheel. The automatic transmission changes gears extremely fast, and the launch control program enables the Audi R8 to make stunningly fast starts wîth perfectly controlled slip. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive is tailored to the mid-engine concept wîth a rear-biased axle load distribution, sending roughly 85 percent of the power to the rear wheels in the standard distribution. The heart of the system is a viscous coupling at the front axle, which can transfer up to 30 percent of the torque to the front within milliseconds, if needed.

Chassis

The chassis of the Audi R8 is just as well suited for blasting through corners as it is for casual cruising. Aluminum double wishbones locate the wheels up front and at the back. The setup for the R8 wîth V10 engine is somewhat stiffer than for the R8 4.2 FSI. The top model comes standard wîth 19-inch wheels. All four floating brake discs are internally vented and perforated. A total of 24 pistons clamp down on them. The optional carbon fiber-ceramic brakes are extremely lightweight, strong, and durable. The Audi magnetic ride adaptive shock absorber system is standard in the R8 5.2 FSI quattro and an option wîth the V8.

Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 Spyder has its own unique touches. It does not include the storage space behind the seats and sideblades on the flanks. The rear side panels and the large cover over the compartment for the top are made of a carbon-fiber composite. Two cowls extending to the spoiler lip give the long back of the car a powerful profile. Typically Audi, the top is made of cloth, which keeps the total weight and the vehicle’s center of gravity low. It requires little space when open and harmonizes ideally wîth the design line when closed. With the standard hydraulic motor, the soft top opens and closes within 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). It is perfectly suitable for high-speed driving on the highway and is very quiet.

The separate wind deflector can be installed in just two steps. The heated glass rear window is integrated into the bulkhead separately and can be raised and lowered via a switch. The bulkhead also includes integrated rollover protection. The Spyder’s ASF body is reinforced in key areas, yet weighs just six kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The leather seats of the open two-seater are specially pigmented to reduce heating as a result of the sun’s rays. Among the other options is the seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit, which makes it possible to talk on the phone wîth the top down on the highway. Integrated into the belts are three small microphones; a fourth is mounted on the windshield frame. The seat belt microphone is also available for the R8 Coupé.
