Chassis and Suspension

All Escalade models are built on GM’s full-size SÚV platform, incorporating a fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, five-link/coil-spring rear suspension and rack-and-pinion §teering. Magnetic Ride Control is standard on Escalade Hybrid and the Platinum Edition. It is a real-time damping system that delivers more precise body motion control – ‘reading’ the road every millisecond and changing damping in just five milliseconds. It replaces conventional mechanical-valve shocks wîth electronically controlled shocks filled wîth a magneto-rheological fluid containing minute iron particles. Únder the presence of magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance almost instantly.

Powertrains

All Escalade models are equipped wîth a 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (301 kW) and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm). It features variable valve timing, Active Fuel Management technology and E85 capability.
• Continuously variable valve timing allows linear delivery of torque, wîth near-peak levels over a broad rpm range, and high specific output (horsepower per liter of displacement). It also helps reduce exhaust emissions. Because it manages valve overlap at optimum levels, it eliminates the need for an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
• GM’s Active Fuel Management technology temporarily deactivates four of the engine’s cylinders under light-load conditions to help optimize fuel economy, and seamlessly reactivates them when full power is required. The transition takes less than 20 milliseconds and is virtually indiscernible.
• A heavy-duty timing chain delivers quiet operation and long life. It is validated for 200,000 miles (320,000 km) of operation.
• E85 is a clean-burning, domestically produced alternative fuel composed of 85 percent ethanol alcohol and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol is renewable and produces fewer greenhouse gases during the combustion process.
• The fuel-saving Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is paired wîth the 6.2L engine in all models.

OnStar Details

OnStar is standard on all Escalade models. It uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of crash. OnStar subscribers also can use the service to be Good Samaritans by sending help to other motorists, and to call for help in other non-crash emergencies.
• OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada.
• One year of complimentary OnStar Directions and Connections service wîth Turn-by-Turn Navigation for easier route guidance on all Escalade models. The feature is easy to use because all directions are sent to the car by an advisor, without the need to stop.
• Stolen Vehicle Assistance helps police track the vehicle.
• myCadillac and OnStar myLink mobile apps offer vehicle information and OnStar services via the customer’s smartphone.
To thwart thefts, Escalade has a sophisticated cryptographic immobilizer system, PASS Key 3+. Since 2010, Escalade has included a §teering column lock system to help prevent other theft conditions, including push-away theft.

The BMW X1, the very first and still the only premium vehicle in its §egmènt, continues to extend its pioneering position in the field of fuel efficiency. In the autumn of 2011, the model diversity across the range of the compact all-rounder will be complemented by the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition. This model, which was systematically designed to provide driving pleasure simultaneously combined wîth reduced fuel consumption and emission levels, is powered by a 120 kW/163 hp four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. With an average fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and a CO2 emission level of 119 grams per kilometre it achieves best marks for efficiency in a BMW X model. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2011, a newly developed four-cylinder petrol engine wîth BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will be available for the BMW X1.

The 135 kW/184 hp power unit also sets new standards in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions within its performance class, wîth values ranging from 7.1 litres and 165 grams for the BMW X1 sDrive20i and 7.7 litres (automatic: 7.6 litres) and 179 grams (177 grams) for the BMW X1 xDrive20i. The consistent deployment of highly efficient engines and BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard helps BMW X models also achieve brand-typical driving pleasure combined wîth exemplary fuel economy and low emission levels. The BMW X1′s outstanding efficiency is a fundamental part of its premium character, which is unique within the competitive environment and also underscored by high-class workmanship, elaborated functionality, a variable interior and numerous equipment features. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition raises the relation between sporty and athletic agility and fuel economy to a new level.

Its 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, whose BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a supercharging system wîth variable turbine geometry and Common Rail injection, generates a maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp between 3 250 und 4 200 rpm. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is available between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm.
The engine has been optimised in detail in order to achieve an exceptionally high degree of efficiency. Special model-specific features include a centrifugal force pendulum in the dual-mass flywheel, which compensates vibration experienced at low engine speeds, thus providing more riding comfort when the vehicle is driven within the economic low engine speed range.

The gear-shift point indicator fitted as standard has been adapted to suit the new engine characteristics. Moreover, standard features also include brake energy regeneration, Auto Start Stop function, electromechanical power §teering, a disengageable air-conditioning compressor and tyres wîth reduced rolling resistance.
The petrol engine variants of the BMW X1 also present themselves as pacesetters for ever-increasing driving pleasure combined wîth optimised efficiency. The BMW X1 xDrive28i is now being followed by further models featuring a new generation of four-cylinder combustion engines wîth BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package featured on the 2-litre four-cylinder power unit for the BMW X1 sDrive20i wîth rear-wheel drive and the BMW X1 xDrive20i wîth intelligent four-wheel drive comprises a supercharging system according to the Twin Scroll principle, the direct injection system High Precision Injection and variable valve control VALVETRONIC. This combination guarantees not only spontaneous response and sporty power delivery even in the higher load ranges, but also favourable fuel consumption that is outstanding for petrol engines in this performance class.

Maximum power output of the new engine is 135 kW/184 hp, which is made available between 5 000 and 6 250 rpm, whilst maximum torque of 270 Nm is achieved between 1 250 and 4 500 rpm. Thanks to its supreme pulling power and sporting performance, the BMW X1 sDrive20i accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and the BMW X1 xDrive20i in 7.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption of 7.1 litres/100 km as per the EÚ test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 165 grams are applicable to the BMW X1 sDrive20i both in conjunction wîth the standard six-speed manual gearbox as well as wîth the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The BMW X1 xDrive20i achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.7 litres/100 km (automatic: 7.6 litres) and a CO2 emission level of 179 (177) grams per kilometre. The standard BMW Efficient Dynamics technology package featured on both models comprises in addition to brake energy regeneration and on-demand control of ancillary components also the Auto Start Stop function and the gear-shift point indicator for vehicles wîth manual transmission as well as electromechanical power §teering on the BMW X1 sDrive20i.

With the introduction of the new engines, the drive portfolio of the BMW X1 will increase in the autumn of 2011 to a total of three petrol and four diesel power units wîth a power output spectrum ranging from 105 kW/143 hp to 180 kW/245 hp. All told, there is a choice of ten model variants, five of them featuring characteristic BMW power transmission to the rear wheels and five wîth the electronically controlled four-wheel drive system xDrive.

The entry-level model from the BMW X family attains additional appeal through optimisation of the suspension technology as well as an extended range of optional equipment. The standard stability control feature DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) has been supplemented on the rear-wheel drive diesel models by the dry braking and fading compensation functions. The models BMW X1 sDrive20i, BMW X1 sDrive28i, BMW X1 xDrive20i, BMW X1 xDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive20d are equipped in addition wîth the brake stand-by function and a hill-start assistant. The BMW Individual roof rail system High Gloss Shadow Line will also be available in future as an individual option and thus not only in conjunction wîth the M Sport Package for the BMW X1. Moreover, the optional range of BMW ConnectedDrive features will be supplemented as from the autumn of 2011 by the Real-Time Traffic Information function.

Interior

Ergonomic design needs no lengthy explanation; it’s something you sense immediately. That’s why everything in the cabin of the new BMW X1 is geared towards one simple goal: intuitive operation wîth the maximum feel-good factor. The entire cockpit is oriented towards the driver and, thanks to its clear lines, guides the eyes to the road ahead. The raised seating position provides a particularly good overview, including of the interior: high-end materials, perfectly attuned colours, outstanding workmanship, and many convenient details.

Exterior

The new BMW X1 formula. At first glance a compact X model, on second glance the challenge of getting to know something new. It starts wîth the design: rising lateral lines lend the new BMW X1 a dynamic shape, while short overhangs and a sloping rear windscreen create a sporty, elegant silhouette. At the front, the distinctively shaped bonnet and the three-eye look of the headlights make for a striking impact, while the L-shaped taillights in conjunction wîth the horizontal flow of lines visually broaden the rear. All told, the design of the BMW X1 has a very simple message: it is joy in material form.

Performance

This optional technology for xDrive models uses dynamic engine and braking intervention to improve cornering behaviour, thus boosting driving pleasure and enhancing safety at the same time. Through targeted braking, optimal torque is distributed to the individual wheels depending on the driving situation. Performance Control also optimises engine performance management by gently breaking the rear wheel on the inside of the bend while at the same time increasing torque to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This allows for particularly dynamic conerning wîth the best possible grip. The new BMW X1 also responds to §teering commands more spontaneously, for increased agility and sporty driving.

Engine

The BMW X1 xDrive23d features the world’s first four-cylinder diesel engine wîth Variable Twin Turbo. Two different-sized turbochargers are deployed sequentially to deliver blistering power right across the rev range. At low revs, the small turbocharger works on its own to provide instantaneous throttle response. Third-generation common rail injection in the BMW X1 sDrive18d, BMW X1 xDrive18d, BMW X1 sDrive20d and BMW X1 xDrive20d ensures exceptional performance (up to 130 kW / 177 hp) in hand wîth unbeatable fuel consumption levels (starting at a frugal 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres). The diesel engines in the BMW X1 meet the EÚ5 emissions standard.

MSRP: $30,995 -$39,560.
Invoice: $28,670 -$36,593.

Powertrain details

The H3 Alpha’s 5.3L engine is a powerful and efficient member of GM’s legendary small-block V-8 family. It is rated at 295 horsepower (224 kW)* and 317 lb.-ft. of torque (438 Nm)*; and is similar to the small-block V-8 found in the Chevy Silverado, which was named the 2007 Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show. For jobs such as towing personal watercraft up a mountain to the lake, the small-block V-8′s torque performs wîth effortless ease and little impact on fuel mileage,’ said Christopher Meagher, assistant chief engineer of small-block V-8 truck engines. ‘The 5.3L engine greatly broadens the H3′s towing capability.

Effortless highway driving also is an attribute of the 5.3L V-8, which enables 0-60 mph performance of approximately eight seconds. All of the powertrain options in the H3 lineup deliver performance suited to different driving styles and needs,’ said Meagher. ‘But when it comes to certain tasks such as towing, there is sometimes no substitute for a V-8 engine. An aluminum cylinder block is used wîth the H3 Alpha’s engine. It helps reduce overall mass and maintains a more desirable front-to-rear weight balance. Like all of GM’s small-block V-8 engines, highlights include:

• Deep-skirt cylinder block wîth cross-bolted main caps

• High-flow cylinder heads

• Electronic throttle control

• 58X ignition system

• E67 32-bit controller

• Polymer-coated pistons wîth full-floating wrist pins

• Returnless fuel system

• Lightweight valvetrain

• Steel camshaft

• Low-restriction air intake system

GM’s small-block V-8 engines are engineered to meet today’s more stringent emissions standards. In fact, the H3 Alpha’s V-8 engine beats the deadline for new, Ú.S. federal emissions standards by a year. And compared to truck engines of a decade ago, the small-block engine family is approximately 90 percent cleaner. Cast iron exhaust manifolds matched wîth four close-coupled catalytic converters help reduce cold-start emissions, which is the largest source of vehicle emissions. A Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is paired wîth the H3 Alpha’s V-8 engine. And, as wîth all H3 models, flat-towing is enabled.

Interior and Safety

The H3 Alpha shares the same widely admired interior as all H3 models, including detail revisions and enhancements that have been implemented across the lineup. New child safety locks for the rear doors and easier-to-use power window switches were introduced during the ’08 model year and reflect customers’ input. Details matter, and our customers told us these details were particularly important, so we updated the H3 lineup to address them.

Also new for the H3 Alpha and the entire 2008 H3 lineup are standard head curtain side air bags; they were previously optional. Additional standard safety features now found on all H3 models include:

StabiliTrak electronic stability control system

Four-wheel antilock brakes wîth traction control

Dual front air bags wîth Passenger Sensing System

Tire pressure monitoring system

Vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility

LATCH rear child seat anchors

HÚMMER’s Rear Vision system and a navigation system are available. The Rear Vision system uses a camera mounted near the rear bumper to provide a view of objects directly behind the vehicle. Also, the safety and security of OnStar is standard, and its new Turn-By-Turn Navigation feature is available.

Wide Enhancements

HÚMMER H3 and GM Performance Division engineers did more than simply shoehorn a V-8 engine into the H3′s engine compartment. Accommodating the new power plant necessitated the execution of a seemingly endless number of technical details – many of which have been implemented across the entire H3 lineup. The H3′s frame was modified to accept the V-8 engine, and a special oil pan was designed to ensure constant oil pressure when driving on steep grades – a hallmark of HÚMMER’s off-road capability.

Also, the engine compartment front of dash was modified to accommodate the V-8, and a new §teering system is used on all H3 models to deliver better on-center feel and even more improved off-road reliability. To support the torque output of the powerful V-8, the H3 Alpha’s front differential case is made of cast iron; other models feature an aluminum case. New engine mounts, higher torsion bar rates to support the increased mass, and specific shock valving also are unique to the V-8-powered model, ensuring it continues to deliver the unparalleled ride quality – both on- and off-road – that customers expect.

Completely redesigned for 2010, Taurus offers a revised color palette for 2012. It adds Ginger Ale Metallic, an elegant new hue. Bringing enhanced rear visibility, Taurus now features standard integrated blind spot mirrors in the power-assisted sideview mirrors. Taurus quality begins wîth its distinctive design. Vehicle appearance is a significant purchase reason for full-size sedan buyers. Taurus is muscular and athletic, wîth design cues – such as the lower trapezoidal grille opening – that give some visual linkage and family resemblance to other nameplates in the Ford showroom.

Exterior craftsmanship for the new Taurus has been improved through the employment of digital pre-assembly. This advanced technology enables engineers to address potential issues in Taurus manufacturing while still in the online phase, and ensures precise, uniform surface gaps and margins once series production is initiated. Taurus was benchmarked against premium European sedans for exterior fit-and-finish superiority.

Taurus’ interior craftsmanship is elevated through expanded use of soft-touch, high-quality materials inside the cabin. Úpgraded materials across the instrument panel and throughout the center console are evidence of continuous improvement. Taurus NVH control has delivered a car that rivals premium imported sedans for quietness. Taurus continues to build on a legacy of safety, as the 2011 model earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick rating. The stiff Taurus structure contains a significant portion of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels, including boron.

Taurus features the Trinity front-crash architecture, named for the three elements that are designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from vehicle occupants. These components consist of an ultra-high-strength boron front beam to absorb initial impact force, boron ‘shotgun rails’ that transfer impact forces in a diagonal path to the roof panel, and a decoupling engine cradle within the front subframe to help prevent the powertrain from interfering wîth the cabin.

Taurus also features Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement (SPACE®) Architecture, a hydroformed cross-car beam embedded in the floor between the door frames to help provide additional strength on the vehicle sides. A rigid roof crossmember, side-impact door beams and boron B-pillar reinforcement also contribute to side-impact protection. In the event of an airbag deployment, Taurus provides an SOS Post-Crash Alert System™ and features AdvanceTrac® wîth electronic stability control.

Price: $25,555 – $38,155.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2012 Ford Taurus is a full-size five-passenger sedan offered in SE, SEL, Limited and SHO trim levels. Standard equipment on the entry-level SE includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, integrated blind spot mirrors, keyless entry with an exterior access keypad, cruise control, air-conditioning, a six-way power driver seat (manual recline), a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, trip computer, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker sound system with CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The Sync voice-activated electronics interface with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity is optional.

The SEL adds 18-inch wheels, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a compass, an outside temperature display and satellite radio. Options on the SEL include 19-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, leather upholstery (packaged with heated front seats and a six-way power passenger seat), ambient interior lighting and Sync. All the above items are standard on the Taurus Limited, along with perforated leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats with power lumbar and driver seat memory functions, a wood-trimmed steering wheel and a seven-speaker upgraded stereo with a six-CD player.

The Taurus SHO adds a more powerful V6 engine, a sport-tuned suspension, different steering, xenon headlights, an auto-dimming driver side mirror, a rear spoiler, special styling flourishes inside and out, keyless entry/ignition (optional on SEL and Limited) and unique leather upholstery with faux-suede inserts. The optional SHO Performance package adds performance brake pads, recalibrated steering, a different final-drive ratio, stability control defeat, summer tires and 20-inch wheels. Those wheels are also a stand-alone option.

Options on all but the base SE include a sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, a 12-speaker Sony premium audio system, and “multicontour” front seats with active bolsters and massage. Options on the Limited and SHO include a blind-spot warning system, automatic high beams and rain-sensing wipers (packaged together), heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear window shade, adaptive cruise control, and a navigation system with a touchscreen interface, voice controls, Sirius Travel Link service (real-time traffic, weather and other information), a single-CD player, DVD audio and digital music storage.

Interior

The 2012 Ford Taurus offers a classy passenger cabin, though the use of hard plastics in a few places detracts a bit from the overall upscale feel. The interior is also quite comfortable, especially with the optional high-tech “multicontour” front seats with built-in massage. The backseat offers generous head- and legroom even for good-sized adults. At 20.1 cubic feet, the trunk is one of the largest you’ll find on any sedan. Fold down the rear seats and the Taurus offers up even more space.

On the downside, the car’s rising beltline, thick roof pillars and tall center console can make the interior feel confining despite its large size. Other issues include deep-set gauges that can be hard to read and the dashboard’s large and somewhat confusing assortment of buttons and knobs. Like most other Fords, the Taurus can be equipped with the useful Sync system, which connects cell phones and portable music players into the car’s electronic interface that includes voice commands.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Taurus is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 263 hp and 249 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is available as an option on SEL and Limited models. In Edmunds performance testing, a front-drive Taurus went from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds — a tad slow for the class. Fuel economy with front-wheel drive is an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. All-wheel drive drops those numbers to 17/25/20.

The Taurus SHO gets a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (dubbed “EcoBoost”) that makes 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic with shift paddles is standard, as is all-wheel drive. In Edmunds performance testing, the Taurus SHO went from zero to 60 mph in a quick 5.8 seconds. Despite this engine’s impressive performance, EPA fuel economy estimates are the same as the regular all-wheel-drive Taurus.

Safety

Every 2012 Ford Taurus comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags and integrated blind spot mirrors. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are standard on Limited and SHO models and optional on the SEL. Optional on the Limited and SHO are a pre-collision warning system (included with adaptive cruise control) and a blind-spot warning system bundled with a cross-traffic warning system, which warns you of approaching cars or pedestrians when backing up.

In government crash tests, the Taurus earned an overall rating of four stars out of a possible five, with four stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. It also got the best rating of “Good” in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s frontal-offset, side and roof strength tests. A Taurus with 19-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in a longer-than-average 131 feet. Even with summer tires and 20-inch wheels, the SHO was only able to manage 127 feet — a long distance for a performance-oriented sedan.

Driving Impressions

On the road, the 2012 Ford Taurus offers confident handling and a comfortable ride quality. The firmer sport-tuned suspension underpinning the SHO model sharpens up the handling noticeably. However, there’s no hiding the Taurus’ hefty weight and grand dimensions. The SHO’s twin-turbo V6 offers acceleration that falls just short of its V8-powered competitors from Chrysler and Dodge, but it returns fuel economy that puts them to shame. Even so, we think most folks will be just as happy driving any of the three models powered by the standard V6 and pocketing the substantial price difference.

The 5.3L and 6.2L engines are capable of running on E85; in fact, all Yukon 4WD and Yukon XL half-ton models come standard wîth the E85-capable version of the 5.3L V-8. GM vehicles wîth E85 capability can run on 100-percent gasoline, E85 or any combination of the two.

Price: $38,535 – 61,365.
Invoice: $35,835 – 57,985.

Driving Experience

The Yukon and Yukon XL, available in 2WD and 4WD, are built on GM’s full-size SÚV platform, which incorporates features such as a fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion §teering. The frame supports wide front and rear tracks that enhance stability and driving confidence through a more secure road feel and a lower center of gravity. Yukon rides on a 116-inch (2,946 mm) wheelbase, wîth an overall length of 202 inches (5,130 mm). Its wide track complements the long wheelbase to provide a smooth, confident and secure driving experience. Yukon XL models have exterior dimensions similar to the regular models, but are about 14 inches longer in wheelbase and 20 inches longer in overall length.

The front suspension consists of a coil-over-shock design that delivers linear, solid and unwavering ride and handling characteristics on all road surfaces. A rack-and-pinion §teering system provides precise and responsive control and enhanced on-center feel. Yukon and Yukon XL models use a highly refined five-link rear suspension that provides superior isolation and ride, wîth larger, firmer brackets that also contribute to the vehicles’ precise driving manners.

Large, four-wheel disc brakes and a sophisticated ABS system ensure shorter braking distances and §egmènt-leading performance. Larger vented front and rear brake rotors, stiff dual-piston calipers and long-life brake pads contribute to enhanced pedal feel, reduced brake noise and predictable, linear brake response. A Bosch 8.0 next-generation four-channel ABS system is standard. The ABS system works wîth the standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system wîth traction control. It incorporates rollover mitigation – software algorithm technology that uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle ‘tip-up,’ and applies appropriate brake forces to help prevent such events.

Enhanced driving control and ride smoothness are offered wîth the available Autoride real-time damping system (standard on Denali), which uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to make nearly instantaneous damping adjustments. The system ‘reads’ the road and anticipates the best damping rates. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard on Yukon and Yukon XL 2WD models, wîth 17-inch wheels standard on 4WD. Twenty-inch wheels are available – including a chrome-clad design. The tires are tailored to the vehicles to provide excellent balance of handling, quietness and safety. Yukon HD comes standard wîth 17-inch wheels, while the Yukon Denali lineup is equipped wîth 20-inch wheels.

Interior

The Yukon and Yukon XL are available in two trim levels: SLE (cloth) and SLT (leather). Both feature a spacious and refined environment, thanks to a premium tone-on-tone color scheme and a lower-positioned instrument panel. A third-row seat is standard on all Yukon models. Sculpted seat designs and detailed trim affirm the vehicles’ craftsmanship, which is bolstered by optional amenities such as heated seats for first- and second-row passengers. Also, the front seats offer plenty of fore/aft and recline travel, and the second-row seats have a comfortable angle for the seatback recline. Craftsmanship is seen in unexpected areas, such as distinctive sill plates that greet occupants when the doors are opened, and there are no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have ‘close-outs’ that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. The undersides of the seats are covered, too, when folded.

The Yukon and Yukon XL also offer an industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat. The power fold-and-tumble second-row seats feature release buttons accessible by the driver on the overhead console or on the interior C-pillar to provide an easy, immediate release of the seat and an access path to the third-row seat or cargo area. Yukon and Yukon XL interiors are versatile, too. The third-row seats fold flat and are easily tumbled forward or removed for maximum cargo area. Also, the center console storage compartment, at 20.1 liters of capacity, is the §egmènt’s largest. The glove box offers significant storage space, too, and features damped opening operation that bolsters quietness and refinement.

Safety

The Yukon and Yukon XL offer a 360-degree perimeter safety system of occupant protection and crash avoidance technologies. Standard features include head curtain side air bags for all seating rows and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle’s sensing system to provide §egmènt-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes. These features are integrated into a stronger vehicle structure that is also designed for improved compatibility wîth other vehicles.

The head curtain air bags include design features that provide increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front of the vehicle, in the side doors, and within the occupant compartment provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The vehicle’s sensing system provides §egmènt-exclusive capability to deploy front seat safety belt pretensioners during certain rear-end collisions, enhancing the belt system’s ability to hold the occupants firmly in place.

The head curtain side air bag system incorporates one of the §egmènt’s first rollover indication sensors, which is located on the vehicle’s center tunnel in the occupant compartment. The sensor monitors the vehicle’s acceleration and roll rate. If these signals indicate an impending rollover, the roof-mounted head curtain side air bags deploy to provide an extra measure of occupant protection and containment. These head curtain side air bags stay inflated longer than air bags developed only for side impacts because rollover incidents can last longer. The deployment duration and other design features of the head curtain air bags combine to provide increased occupant protection and the ability to help keep occupants inside the vehicle.

The latest generation of the SLK blazes a trail of new sporty highlights, and bestows yet greater appeal on this two-seater sports car wîth its trendsetting vario-roof, that transforms it from roadster to weatherproof coupe in a matter of seconds. The designers have honed the looks of the two-seater for added sportiness. Especially eye-catching is the restyled front bumper, featuring modified §egmèntation of the air intakes and a more pronounced V-shape, while the area around the Mercedes star is further emphasized. The designers have also redesigned the vehicle’s rear section, wîth the diffuser-look styling giving the roadster an even more powerful appearance from behind.

Many of the interior’s details have also been revised, and the interior has been refined as a whole by meticulous material selection. Particular care was taken to optimize the interior to make it that much more driver-focused. The focal point in this respect is formed by a new three-spoke sports §teering wheel wîth multifunction controls, as well as a new instrument cluster wîth redesigned bezels. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is equipping the SLK wîth the new NTG 2.5 generation of audio and telematics components. This boasts improved user friendliness together wîth even more convenient functions. All audio systems come complete wîth built-in hands-free capability wîth Bluetooth technology.

Also available is a new optional media interface in the glove compartment, which enables mobile audio devices such as the iPod to be fully integrated into the audio system and operated from its control panel. The switch to the new telematics generation now sees Mercedes-Benz offering the optimized LINGÚATRONIC voice control system, renowned for its outstanding operation, as an option in the SLK-Class for the first time. Customers who wish to enjoy the ultimate acoustic experience, whether driving wîth the vario-roof up or down, can opt for the harman/kardon® Logic7® sound system. Here, the passenger compartment is filled by a rich surround sound, delivering crystal-clear listening pleasure of unprecedented quality for a roadster.

Price: $44,150 – 63,200.
Invoice: $41,060 – 58,775.

Direct-Steer System For Immense Agility And Tangible Fun At The Wheel

A new direct-steer system wîth variable power assistance elicits the very best from the suspension’s sporty capabilities. The system provides agility and maneuverability when driving on twisting rural roads, §teering comfort when parking and assured §teering characteristics when traveling at high speed. The direct-steer system is derived from the previous speed-sensitive power §teering and operates purely mechanically. This dispenses wîth the need for sophisticated actuator units and complex sensors, which interfere wîth the direct flow of power between wheel and hand and therefore have a detrimental effect on §teering precision. At the heart of the system is a new rack wîth ingeniously devised gearing that is designed to alter the §teering gear ratio as the §teering angle changes.

Around the central position, the §teering has an indirect ratio for good straight-line stability, resulting in excellent safety at high speeds. As soon as the §teering wheel is turned past an angle of 5 degrees, the ratio increases rapidly and the §teering feels far more direct. In this way, the number of §teering wheel turns from lock to lock is reduced by around 25 percent wîth the new direct-steer system. Consequently, relatively small turns of the §teering wheel are sufficient for changing course when driving in city traffic. Meanwhile, high-speed twisty sections of country roads can be negotiated safely, precisely and wîth enormous pleasure using relatively small §teering movements.

Design

After shaking up the small roadster market when it was introduced ten years ago, the second-generation SLK wowed the public again when it hit Ú.S. streets in 2004. Inspired by the world of Formula One racing, the exterior design of the SLK incorporates an arrow-shaped nose, a sleek front hood, sloped windshield and a handsome, tapered silhouette. Aggressive styling carries through to the rear, punctuated by dual exhausts. Dominating the SLK cockpit are large chronometer-style gauges – speedometer, fuel gauge, tachometer and clock – wîth silver switches and trim elements that contrast against a darker sculpted dash.

Driving

The automatic retractable hardtop of the SLK sets it apart from the competition. With the top up, it’s a quiet coupe – push a button, and the car is topless. The roof of the current SLK goes up and down in 22 seconds, and the folded roof takes up surprisingly little trunk space – thanks to its pivoting rear window. Like the retractable hardtop of the larger SL model, the rear window of the latest SLK swivels to match the curvature of the top, providing nearly three more cubic feet of trunk room than its predecessor.

The optional AIRSCARF system (standard on the Edition 10) can extend the open-air driving season into the cooler months. Built into the seatbacks of the SLK, the neck-level heating system blows warm air from the head restraints of the driver and passenger seats, allowing occupants to cruise comfortably wîth the retractable hardtop open in cooler weather. AIRSCARF even compensates automatically for vehicle speed.

EngineThe SLK280 and SLK350 use advanced engine technology that’s characterized by four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, which requires separate camshafts for the intake and exhaust valves. Whether it’s the 3.0- or 3.5-liter version, the twin-cam V6 develops more than 80 percent of its maximum torque at only 1,500 rpm. While variable valve timing gets much of the credit for the engine’s unusually broad torque curve, a two-stage intake manifold plays a key role as well. Other high-tech engine features include tumble flaps that increase gas mileage by creating additional turbulence in the intake passages at part throttle.

HardBody

The SLK’s unibody uses an impressive amount of high-strength steel alloy – 42 percent of the total structure – and the entire body shell is zinc-coated for long-term corrosion protection. The SLK makes use of a scratch-resistant clearcoat paint that was initially developed in the nano-technology sector. Ceramic particles less than a millionth of a millimeter in size are part of the molecular structure of the paint bonding agent, and as the paint dries, these particles form a regular, dense pattern that greatly enhances its scratch resistance. Rigorous laboratory car wash tests show a 40% improvement in gloss retention.

Safety

The SLK is considered one of the safest roadsters in the world. In addition to its integrated roll bars and two-stage front air bags for both the driver and passenger, the SLK is also equipped wîth dual knee bags and head-thorax air bags which are located in the seat backs and deploy in the event of a side impact that exceeds the deployment threshold. The top edge of the fully-inflated head-thorax air bags reaches above the top edge of the seat back to help provide better head and neck protection similar to the curtain-type air bags on hardtop Mercedes models. Stopping power for the SLK350 is provided by perforated and ventilated 13-inch front disc brakes and solid 11.4-inch rear discs, wîth two-piston calipers at the front and rear. Brakes on the high-performance SLK55 AMG are even bigger, wîth four-piston calipers in front and two-piston calipers at the rear.

Like all Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicles, the SLK comes equipped wîth ESP stability control, a Mercedes innovation that can help prevent slides and spins, especially in slippery weather. ESP can detect an impending spin or slide and prevent it by applying the brakes to individual wheels or reducing engine power. In addition, full-range traction control provides safer travel on slippery road surfaces. Also standard on the SLK is Brake Assist, which can detect an emergency or ‘panic’ stop (based on how quickly the brake pedal is applied) and deliver full braking power, helping to reduce stopping distances.

The 2008 model-year edition continues to push the parameters of the sports car §egmènt, this year wîth only minor updates. New for 2007, the Grand Touring model offers available Sand leather-trimmed seats, while the Touring and the Grand Touring models add a standard 6-disc CD changer. Two new exterior colors are available on all 2007 RX-8 models – Crystal White Pearl and Stormy Blue Mica. Since its creation, the RX-8 has continued to win rave reviews from the automotive press,’ said Tetsu Nakazawa, RX-8 vehicle line manager. ‘The RX-8 is a sports car built for the real world; ideal for zooming around a track, but equally suitable for taking the kids to soccer practice. It is a true sports car that can pull double duty.

The 2008 Mazda RX-8 is available as either a 232-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed manual transmission, or a 212-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed automatic wîth §teering- wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a Formula 1-style driving experience (the change in horsepower ratings from 2006 is due to the new SAE rating standards). Both automatic and manual transmission cars come equipped wîth power windows, mirrors and door locks, cruise control and an AM/FM/CD audio system wîth six speakers.

Price: $26,435 – 32,070.
Invoice: $24,455 – 29,655.

ENGINE

The lifeline of this powerfully agile sports car rests underneath the hood thanks to its advanced RENESIS ( Rotary Engine ge nesis – or rebirth of the rotary engine) engine. The Mazda RX-8 remains the only mass produced rotary-powered passenger car in the world. By turning a triangular rotor in a cocoon-shaped combustion chamber, the RX-8′s rotary engine efficiently performs the four processes of intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. The RENESIS engine is remarkably smooth and high revving — all the way to 9,000 rpm (7,500 rpm on Sport A/T–equipped models) — and offers a smaller engine footprint than traditional internal combustion engines (some 60 percent smaller and lighter than a comparably powered V-6, and 40 percent smaller and lighter than a four-cylinder). In fact, the packaging and styling that define the RX-8 would not have been possible had Mazda engineers chosen a conventional piston engine.

Improving upon 40 years of rotary designs, the RENESIS engine features side intake and exhaust ports wîth nearly 30 percent more intake area and twice as much exhaust area than its predecessors. The efficiencies gained through larger intake and exhaust ports exclude the need for forced induction. The RX-8′s normally aspirated 1.3-liter engine might appear diminutive to the untrained eye when compared to large-displacement V-8s or heavyweight V-10s or V-12s. However, through the incredible efficiencies of a rotary powerplant, an advanced three-stage intake system and an electronic throttle, the RENESIS engine delivers smooth, linear power on a grand scale. The 2007 RX-8 does not sacrifice emissions for power, though. Through improvements to the port design, overlap between the intake and exhaust ports has been eliminated, significantly reducing exhaust emissions, improving fuel economy and allowing the car to meet the strict Tier2 Bin 5 Federal emissions classification. The effort made by Mazda engineers to improve emissions is a prime example of the concern for environmental impact maintained throughout the development process.

By placing the powerplant low and far back in the engine bay, in what Mazda calls an advanced front-midship layout, the center of gravity is lowered, which in turn improves vehicle balance. In addition, the fuel tank is placed ahead of the rear axle, and all seating is within the wheelbase and track of the car. Combined, these factors contribute to a perfect 50/50 vehicle weight distribution, low yaw-inertia movement and superb handling characteristics. With such excellent balance, it is little wonder the RX-8 feels right at home on the twists and turns of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, negotiating a tight freeway onramp or in stop-and-go traffic.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING

The RX-8 uses an aluminum double-wishbone front suspension, reducing unsprung weight over the use of steel components. By mounting the upper and lower arms on a highly rigid sub-frame, the long arms ensure linear alignment changes throughout the jounce and rebound of the front wheels. All wheels receive mono-tube gas-filled shock absorbers designed wîth large-diameter internal pistons and valving, which offer excellent road feedback and a smooth ride.

An electric rack-and-pinion power-§teering system transmits just the right amount of road information back to the driver. Mazda engineers have chosen to pursue their own path by using an electric motor for §teering assistance rather than a conventional power-§teering pump. The electric motor provides additional assistance at low speeds to ease parking and reduces §teering assistance at higher speeds to provide greater road feel, responsiveness and feedback. And, in keeping wîth the rest of the development on RX-8, it is far lighter and easier to package than a conventional power-§teering rack.

STYLING

The RX-8′s unique ‘freestyle’ four-door design is proof that a true sports car does not need to sacrifice space or convenience for performance. The advanced design of the rear-hinged rear doors, provides a large door opening, allowing adult-sized passengers to easily enter and exit the vehicle. This design is also advantageous when securing a baby or a small child in the back seat. With a spacious rear seat area providing ample passenger room for four full-size adults, and enough trunk space for a weekend’s worth of luggage, this sports car proves its versatility.

Taut muscular lines give RX-8 the liberating look of an athlete in motion. The muscular styling maintains classic sports car proportions while adding a Zoom-Zoom edge that is unmistakably Mazda. Integrated throughout the exterior is the unique triangular rotor design, which clearly can be seen in the front fascia, head lamps, hood and rear bumper valence. The RX-8′s exterior styling presents a genuine sports car form, while the interior boasts a comfortable and intelligently designed cabin. An extremely low cabin floor allows the seats to be mounted low in the chassis, which, along wîth a low instrument cluster and hood, enhance driver visibility. Mazda designers concentrated on the shape of the front seat backs and the rear seat cushions to ensure adequate rear-seat knee room. Front seat slide-rails are positioned to allow maximum leg room for rear-seat passengers.

The rotary design element is incorporated through the interior of the RX-8 in creative ways, appearing in the seats, center console, shift knob and emergency brake. The stylish cabin also evokes a sense of luxury and high-end quality. Mazda’s design team examined every aspect and component of the interior and has created an elegant, driver-centric atmosphere. Through the use of advanced ergonomic research, Mazda engineers established improper seating posture to be a cause of driver fatigue and built in optimum support in the front seats to help offset discomfort. In addition, the soft blue lighting used in the RX-8′s instrument cluster was found to reduce eye fatigue and strain.

SAFETY

When designing the RX-8, safety was given as much of a priority as was performance. For Mazda, the safety process incorporates both accident avoidance and accident protection. In effect, this approach to safety means the RX-8 can help the driver avoid various dangers and protect occupants in the unfortunate event of a collision. In rollover tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the RX-8 achieved an impressive five-star rating. Mazda engineers integrated numerous active and passive safety elements throughout the car. Active safety features, which require input from the driver, include the use of large ABS-equipped disc brakes on all wheels as well as precise §teering and suspension systems. Dynamic Stability Control (standard on manual transmission cars wîth Sport Package, optional on RX-8s wîth automatic transmissions) delivers a superior level of handling that can be disabled when driving and road conditions allow safe operation.

Passive systems, or those that take effect automatically without the driver’s involvement, also are present throughout the RX-8. Despite the absence of a center B-pillar, the RX-8 has an exceptionally rigid body, accomplished through the use of a series of locking pins, which hold the doors together and bind each door directly into the roof and floor. Integrating the frame components helps dissipate crash energy through the vehicle’s structure.

Other standard passive systems on the RX-8 include front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags. Additionally, the front end and engine bay have ample crumple zones, the front seats are designed to reduce whiplash injuries, the brake pedal is designed to break away in the event of a collision of sufficient force to protect feet and legs and all four seating positions are fitted wîth three-point seatbelts. Even pedestrian protection was considered, as the RX-8 is fitted wîth Mazda’s ‘shock-cone’ hood design that yields more to the impact of a pedestrian onto the hood than a standard design, yet is strong enough to not deform in normal use.

The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu made its global debut today, wîth simultaneous introductions in the Únited States and China – two of the nearly 100 countries on six continents where it will be sold. Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan will provide customers from Shanghai to New York and Sydney to Sao Paulo wîth expressive design, advanced technologies, ride performance and fuel-efficient powertrains.

‘The current Malibu has left an award-winning impression and changed the way people think about Chevrolet. It redefined what an American midsize car could be,’ said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. ‘This all-new Malibu delivers on the intangibles of today’s Malibu but gives customers even more: more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, craftsmanship, and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans.’

Price: $21,995 – 30,085.
Invoice: $21,005 – 28,430.

Exterior

The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan §egmènt,’ said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director for GM exterior design and Chevrolet Brand Champion. A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive appearance. The new Malibu has a 4.5-inch (114 mm) shorter wheelbase and 62-inch (1,574 mm) front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches (51 mm) wider than the model it replaces.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels. The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the §egmènt, wîth a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.

Malibu also has electronically controlled and integrated active aero shutters (select models in North American markets) to improve aerodynamics and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design. Malibu’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aerodynamic performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. Whether the shutter is open or closed depends on engine coolant temperature and speed – for example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when less engine cooling is required.

Interior

The new Malibu interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving, featuring an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment. The increased width of the new Malibu means a more spacious cabin. Compared to the previous model, it has nearly 4 cubic feet (113 L) of additional interior volume, along wîth more shoulder and hip room.

The Malibu interior features metallic, chrome or wood accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack, around the instrument cluster and on doors and the §teering wheel. Soft, ice blue ambient lighting reflects off of and complements chrome accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel and in storage pockets. Ice blue lighting on the center stack dials, exposed ice blue French contrast stitching, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to Malibu’s interior refinement.

The Malibu also has a number of storage areas, including a radio face that articulates up and down to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind its seven-inch touch-screen radio display – a Ú.S. first in a midsize car. Malibu will also offer a full range of the latest infotainment options, including new color radio systems and an available navigation system.

Malibu will include Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package at launch. It builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®. MyLink integrates wireless connectivity through Bluetooth to enable hands-free use of selected smart phone apps while the device remains safely stowed. MyLink features a high-resolution, full-color touch screen display designed to manage the number of steps required to complete a task. MyLink also adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smart phones, building on the Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevrolet vehicles.

The 2008 Volvo C70 sees a slight horsepower increase, up from 218 to 227. The car’s interior also gets a few upgrades, with new wood accents, a leather steering wheel and gearshift knob, and redesigned air vents.

Introduction

The Volvo C70 got its start in the late 1990s and was one of the first models to break out of the Swedish brand’s stodgy image and into territory occupied by truly stylish cars with sleek, sensuous lines. Initially available as both a convertible and a coupe, the C70′s lineup was soon narrowed to include just a convertible. Unfortunately, the car’s charm was marred by the fact that its antiquated underpinnings made it a lot less fun to drive than similarly priced competitors. Volvo placed the C70 on a brief hiatus and then redesigned it from top to bottom for 2006.

With the Volvo C70′s overhaul came a new body structure based on the current S40 sedan, handsome exterior styling and the addition of a three-piece retractable roof that elegantly assembles itself with the grace of an Arabian veil dancer. Once the hardtop is in place, this convertible in essence becomes a coupe, tightly sealed against the elements. Unlike some other convertibles, the Volvo C70 doesn’t confine, with ample top-up headroom for those who stand north of 6 feet. Visibility is another pleasant surprise, with lean rear pillars offering good sight lines for reversing drivers. The 2008 Volvo C70 is just as agreeable with the top down, thanks to minimal wind buffeting. It’s also one of the safest convertibles on the market, as it’s equipped with side curtain airbags that deploy when the top is lowered. To accomplish this feat, Volvo mounted the airbags in the doors.

But alas, all isn’t perfect in Volvo C70 Land. Though the car elicits more warm sparks than its predecessor, it’s hampered by its unimpressive turbocharged inline-5. Handling is competent but hardly energetic. If pep and performance rank high on your list, you’ll want to shift your attention to the more pleasurable (though more expensive) BMW 3 Series convertible. Volkswagen’s Eos is another interesting alternative, given its very similar demeanor and lower price. Still, with its noteworthy trunk space and outstanding safety features, the 2008 Volvo C70 excels as a reasonably family-friendly choice for those in search of a sexy drop top that doesn’t sacrifice versatility.

Price: $39,240 – 39,240.
Invoice: $36,885 – 36,885.

Driving Impressions

Acceleration is hardly mind-blowing, but the 2008 Volvo C70′s turbocharged engine offers enough low-end torque to efficiently hustle the car from a stop. On the move, the car’s body’s structure is rigid and stays flex-free when driven over bumps. The suspension is softly tuned, and the easy-to-drive C70 makes for a pleasing highway or boulevard-cruising companion. But pushed harder, the C70 is an unwilling partner due to uninspiring handling dynamics, numb steering and noticeable brake fade after miles of fast driving.

Interior Design and Special Features

Activate the retractable roof and the C70′s dual-hinged trunk lid opens in a reverse motion and the roof pieces arc backward and stack inside the trunk. Overall, the process is rather seamless, though it does take a longish 30 seconds to complete. With the top up, there are a generous 12.8 cubic feet available for your gear. Top down, you’re left with 6 cubic feet of trunk volume, however.

Most people will find the C70′s front seats extremely comfortable. Legroom is tight for those in the rear, but it should be adequate for children and smaller adults. Fluid and graceful Swedish good looks abound in the C70′s cabin; its lines are free of clutter, and highlights include a center stack that undulates with a ribbon’s clean grace. Still, the C70 has a fair amount of cheap-looking plastics — troubling for a car in this price range.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2008 Volvo C70 is a luxury convertible with a retractable hardtop design. Volvo keeps things simple by offering just one trim level, the T5. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, a power-retractable hardtop, cloth upholstery, eight-way power front seats (with driver memory), automatic dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, heated outside mirrors and an eight-speaker audio system with a six-CD changer and auxiliary audio input.

Buyers can beef up the C70′s content with a quartet of packages. Choose the Premium Package for goodies like leather seats, a compass and HomeLink. The Climate Package gives you heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and headlamp washers. Pick the Convenience Package and get rear park assist, keyless start, power retractable side mirrors, a cabin air filtration system and Volvo’s blind spot information system (BLIS) — with BLIS, indicator lights issue a warning if a vehicle enters your blind spot. Make the most of your music by outfitting your C70 with the Dynaudio Package; it offers a 14-speaker Dolby ProLogic II premium sound system with 910 watts and two subwoofers. Stand-alone options include a navigation system, 18-inch wheels, satellite radio and bi-HID xenon headlights.

Powertrains and Performance

Powering the C70 is a turbocharged, 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine. It’s good for 227 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque, with power sent to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission. Those who’d rather not shift their own gears can go for the optional five-speed automatic. With a manual transmission, the C70 gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Automatic-equipped C70s get an 18/26 mpg rating.

Safety

This being a Volvo, safety is paramount. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, traction control and stability control. Side airbags are also provided, along with special door-mounted, head-protecting side curtain airbags; these are capable of protecting front occupants even when the top is down. In the event of a rollover accident, rollover bars mounted behind the seats automatically deploy for maximum safety. Anti-whiplash seats are also offered as standard equipment. Volvo’s BLIS is available as an option.
