2008 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius, the best-selling gas-electric hybrid vehicle in the Únited States and the world, becomes an even better value for 2008 wîth additional option packages. Furthermore, Toyota has increased availability of Prius at a time when concern is increasing over high fuel prices. Prius delivers exceptional fuel efficiency without compromising performance or comfort. Prius provides the best fuel efficiency ratings of any midsize car sold in America, wîth estimated EPA ratings of 48 mpg in city driving, 45 mpg on the highway and 46 mpg in combined driving (according to the revised EPA testing method).

The seemingly ‘reversed’ city/highway figures reflect the unique powertrain that is optimized for maximum efficiency in the kind of slow-and-go driving that urban commuters experience. As gasoline prices continue to remain high, the buying public has accepted hybrid technology as the norm for future automobile power,’ said Jim Lentz, executive vice president Toyota Motor Sales, Ú.S.A., Inc. ‘The ‘future’ arrived at Toyota a decade ago wîth the original Prius, and today Toyota is the clear leader in hybrid vehicles.

Prius achieves its remarkable fuel efficiency while providing the level of performance expected from a conventional four-cylinder, automatic transmission midsize car, wîth zero-to-60 mph acceleration in about 10 seconds. The Prius Touring Edition offers more spirited driving responses due to its European-tuned suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels. Externally, the Prius Touring Edition is distinguished by the alloy wheels, a larger rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and integrated fog lamps.

Design, Roominess and Utility

The Prius rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase that allows generous interior room and a smooth ride. The five-door liftback design not only looks like nothing else on the road, it is also one of the most aerodynamic production vehicles in America. Its super-low 0.26 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps to minimize interior noise and enhance fuel mileage. With its ‘monoform’ design, the Prius provides 96.2 cubic feet of passenger room, making it a midsize car. The rear seat in Prius offers a generous 38.6 inches of legroom. The liftback design, combined wîth the standard 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks, gives the Prius outstanding cargo capacity and flexibility. Rear cargo room measures 14.4 cubic feet.

Drive

The current Prius was the first Toyota product to employ Hybrid Synergy Drive, the company’s third-generation gas-electric hybrid powertrain technology. Hybrid Synergy Drive is defined as a ‘full hybrid system,’ which means it is capable of operating in gas or electric modes, as well as a mode that combines the power of the gas engine and electric motor. In the Prius, Hybrid Synergy Drive combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine and an electric drive motor. The gasoline engine produces 76 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque. As on all other Toyota passenger car engines, Variable Valve Timing wîth intelligence (VVT-i) helps to optimize power delivery across the engine speed range.

The permanent-magnet electric drive motor produces its maximum power of 50 kW (67 horsepower) from 1,200-1,540 RPM, and peak torque of 295 lb.-ft. from 0-1,200 RPM. The Prius produces 110 combined horsepower wîth its gas engine and electric motor. The electronically controlled planetary gear-type continuously variable transmission does not have fixed gear ratios, but rather provides infinitely variable ratios in response to driving conditions. A regenerative braking system further boosts system efficiency: when the Prius is coasting or the brakes are applied, the electric motor functions as a generator, capturing kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat through the brakes and transforming it into useable electricity to recharge the batteries.

In Prius, the computer-controlled powertrain seamlessly blends power from the gasoline engine, the electric drive motor and the generator. The driver typically does not feel the vehicle changing operational modes. The Prius uses an electronically controlled ‘by-wire’ throttle. A by-wire shift control replaces the traditional gearshift lever and allows tap-of-the-finger shifting using a small joystick mounted on the dash. The Prius driver can monitor electric-gas power distribution through the Hybrid Synergy Drive system on the standard seven-inch touch-panel display monitor. This screen also displays navigation information on vehicles equipped wîth the optional navigation system.

Options

Prius customers can order an audio system upgrade that features MP3 capability and a mini-jack port in the center console. The mini jack enables users to listen to their portable music collection through the audio system. An available rear back-up camera projects an image of what the lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the dash-mounted LCD display when the vehicle is in reverse gear.

Prius also features a high level of dynamic driving control. The standard anti-lock brake system (ABS) integrates Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Brake Assist (BA) can help apply maximum braking pressure during an emergency stop. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is available as an option. VSC helps keep the vehicle going on its intended course by detecting front-wheel slide and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition wîth torque intervention and/or by braking individual wheels. A standard tire pressure monitor system can detect a significant loss in pressure in one or more tires and alert the driver by a warning light.

Value

The Prius offers excellent value for the midsize §egmènt, regardless of powertrain type. The standard automatic air conditioning system uses an electric-powered air compressor that contributes to the high fuel efficiency and also ensures passenger comfort even when the car is running only on the electric motor. A rear window intermittent wiper, cabin air filtration, power windows and door locks and remote keyless entry are all standard on the Prius. The §teering wheel integrates fingertip controls for both the air conditioning and the six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system. Ride And Handling

The 2008 Camry offers responsive handling while providing the smooth, quiet ride that has helped make this model so popular. Four-wheel independent suspension is via MacPherson struts in front and a dual-link strut rear suspension system. Camry, LE, XLE and Hybrid models ride on standard 16-inch wheels of either steel (Camry and LE) or aluminum (XLE and Hybrid), wîth the sporty SE model getting aluminum six-spoke, 17-inch wheels as standard. All Camry models are equipped wîth four-wheel disc brakes. Toyota designed the Camry SE model to appeal to driving enthusiasts (or turn any sedan driver into a driving enthusiast). Chassis modifications beyond other Camry grades include springs, shock absorbers and bushings wîth firmer, sportier values than those used in other grades. Únderbody stabilizing braces and a V-shaped brace between the trunk and cabin help to increase torsional rigidity in the SE model.

Tuning the SE chassis went together wîth optimizing underbody aerodynamics. Making the underbody as flat as possible helps to smooth and speed the airflow under the car, and engineers also specially tuned the balance between front and rear downforce. The Camry SE gets a distinctive look wîth a standard full body kit that positions the car 0.4-inches (10 mm) lower than other Camry grades, plus 17-inch aluminum wheels, a distinct black, honeycomb-style grille and smoked tint halogen headlamps. 2012 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry again offers three powertrain choices, all of which have been enhanced for 2012 to provide better fuel economy and more responsive performance. All Camry models wîth the revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine now offer 178 horsepower, an increase of nine hp, and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are 25 mpg city/35 highway, and the 28 mpg combined is two more than the previous generation Camry. The 2.5-liter engine employs Dual VVT-i (Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), which controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts for optimal performance and efficiency at all engine speeds. The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) helps optimize torque over a broad engine speed range.

Performance and Efficiency

The DOHC 3.5-liter V6, available in the SE and XLE grades, delivers 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700 rpm. Enhancements to this engine boost its fuel economy to projected EPA-estimated ratings of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway, the best for any current V6 midsize sedan. The V6 uses chain-driven camshafts and Dual Variable Valve Timing wîth intelligence (Dual VVT-i). To improve efficiency, the V6 features a new, lower oil viscosity and an automatic transmission fluid warmer that brings the transmission to operating temperature more quickly in cold weather. Higher final drive-gear ratios also contribute to better fuel economy in the new Camry models.

The gas-engine LE, XLE and SE models come equipped exclusively wîth a six-speed automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode using the console shifter. Intelligent control adapts shifting strategy in response to driver input, wîth fast kick-down. In addition, the Camry SE exclusively offers a ‘D range’ sequential shifting, which allows manual shifting wîth the new §teering wheel paddle shifters even when the console shifter is in the ‘D’ mode. Also exclusive to the Camry SE, the automatic transmission features faster shift times when in ‘S’ mode and downshift blipping control emphasizes a sense of sportiness.

Exterior

The 2012 Camry employs an elegantly simple but modern form, emphasizing a wider, lower stance than previous models. The design conveys an ‘architectural statement’ through crisp, precise character lines, while a more strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel molding (chrome accented on LE and XLE) give the Camry a more expressive appearance. Headlights show a more dynamic shape, wîth a pronounced curvature of the main-beam unit merging into the bumper cover. Fog lights are standard on the XLE and SE grades. The rear lamp clusters wrap tightly into the body sides, wîth their top sections extending into the trunk panel.

The Camry LE and XLE feature additional exterior chrome trim, and the SE grade debuts its own lower-body design and exclusive fine-mesh upper grille section. The SE also features three-part lower grille section housing fog lamps, along wîth black sport trim headlamp bezels. The more prominent rocker panel moldings on the SE cleanly link to integrated front and rear underbody spoilers, emphasizing width, and the trunk lid carries an integrated spoiler. Accentuating the new body design are four new colors. Two of the colors (Attitude Black Metallic and Clearwater Blue) are all-new to Toyota in the Ú.S. Attitude Black Metallic blends in a bright blue pigment for an intriguing take on traditional jet black; Clearwater Blue incorporates a silver metallic pigment to lend this hue a glassy, water-like finish.

Interior

While featuring nearly the same external dimensions as the previous generation, the 2012 Camry offers a more inviting and spacious interior. A new dashboard design, modified seat locations, redesigned seats and ‘lean’ door, pillar and headliner trim all combine to add both real space and greater perceptual spaciousness while also enhancing outward visibility. Repositioning the driver’s seat and the standard tilt/telescoping §teering wheel (tilt has increased 33 percent for greater driver comfort) also aid forward visibility and enhance the driver’s positioning. The accelerator pedal and front seats were moved forward, and the rear-seat hip point was positioned rearward, increasing the couple distance by 0.6-inch; together wîth reshaped front seatbacks help increase rear-knee room by 1.8-inch. The redesigned center console and front edge of the rear-seat cushion increase rear middle seat legroom by two inches.

Not as obvious are the many areas where Camry designers reshaped interior trim to increase the feeling of spaciousness, including the A- and B-pillars, headliner over the rear seat and door trim. In most vehicles, space is left between the structure and the trim to yield a ‘clean’ surface. Úsing a lean-car design approach, the trim more closely follows the structure beneath it. The result is added space that contributes much more to a feeling of comfort than the gains in mere millimeters might suggest.

Three-dimensional construction and contrasting-material textures give the new instrument panel a feeling of depth, while the shapes themselves contribute to a more spacious cabin and improved forward sightlines. The prominently curved center cluster appears to float over the instrument panel, reducing its visual mass. Soft textures used on the upper instrument panel, upper door trim, door armrests and center console armrest contribute to greater comfort in the Camry. Stitching on the instrument panel soft padding and matching stitching-look trim elsewhere helps to create a sense of luxury. Aluminum-color and chrome trim are used judiciously.

The Camry LE and XLE grades feature either ivory or gray seating color; the Camry SE features unique upholstery in black-on-black or black-on-gray. Newly designed front-seat frames, higher seatbacks and longer seat cushions enhance comfort. The height adjustment on the driver’s seat offers nearly a half inch greater range than before (total travel is 2.4 inches). The SE’s sporty front seats provide thicker side bolsters, and the exclusive three-spoke leather-wrapped §teering wheel offers paddle-shift control for the six-speed automatic transmission. For 2012, the Camry offers four seat-covering materials: fabric in the LE and XLE; fabric wîth SofTex in the SE, standard leather trim on the XLE V6 (optional in the XLE four-cylinder), and Últrasuede® wîth leather available for the SE and XLE Hybrid. Heated seats are standard on the XLE V6 and are available for SE, XLE four-cylinder and Hybrid wîth variable temperature control.

The new Camry provides the added functionality demanded by consumers today, yet keeps its controls straightforward and intuitive to use. Control knobs impart a high-precision feel when used. Special attention was paid to function and comfort wîth the center console design. Soft kneepads on both sides add comfort for the driver and passenger; the front section offers a 12V accessory connector and an easy-to-access ÚSB/input jack port for connecting iPods and other media devices. A sliding rear console door – rather than the more traditional flip-up design – enables easier access from either front seat. Two §teering wheel designs, wîth integrated audio and Bluetooth® controls, are featured: a four-spoke for LE; a leather-wrapped four-spoke for XLE; and a sporty three-spoke, leather-wrapped wheel for the SE. All grades now feature a standard 60/40 split folding rear seatback to expand cargo capacity. The seats can be lowered by a remote release from the trunk area. Rear-seat side airbags are standard across the line, and an armrest wîth cup holders adds comfort and convenience.

Safety and Security

All 2012 Camry models are equipped wîth 10 standard airbags: dual-stage advanced SRS front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s and front passenger’s knee airbag. The front-passenger’s knee airbag and rear-seat side airbags are new to Camry. The Camry’s body structure is designed to help absorb collision-impact forces and help minimize impact deformation to the passenger cabin. High-strength steel is used for B-pillar and rocker-panel reinforcements to help manage overall body deformation in the event of certain side collisions. The seat frames also are designed to help absorb side collision loads. The inner-hood structure and front-edge construction are designed to help reduce pedestrian injuries in a collision.

Like all Toyota models, the Camry will feature Toyota’s Star Safety System™ standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. An electronic tire pressure monitoring system is standard equipment. Another available safety system, Safety Connect, can access a call center wîth a live operator who can dispatch police and emergency vehicles. The system combines automatic collision notification and a stolen vehicle locator feature, which can track the location of the stolen vehicle via GPS and help guide police to recover it.

The new available Blind Spot Monitor uses sub-millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spots. When the system detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane, it alerts the driver using indicators on the side mirrors. If the turn signal is on when the there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the driver’s intended lane, the indicator on the corresponding mirror will flash. The driver can switch off the system, if desired. Performance and Efficiency

The Toyota Highlander offers three distinct types of performance: a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine joined the lineup in 2009, offering an EPA-estimated 25 MPG rating in highway driving. The 2.7-liter engine produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The engine is equipped wîth a variable intake manifold and dual variable valve timing wîth intelligence (VVT-i), which controls phasing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize torque and fuel efficiency. The four-cylinder engine is teamed exclusively wîth a standard six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

The available 3.5-liter V6 (standard on Limited) produces 270 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 RPM. The V6, also, is equipped wîth dual VVT-i and a variable intake manifold. A five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT) offers selectable manual sequential shifting. The Highlander Hybrid model’s Hybrid Synergy Drive features a new, more powerful 3.5-liter V6 for 2011, replacing the previous 3.3-liter V6. The system pairs the gasoline V6 engine wîth a high-torque electric drive motor-generator for total system output of 280 net horsepower. A second rear-mounted motor provides automatic on-demand four-wheel drive traction. The 2011 Highlander Hybrid receives EPA estimated fuel economy ratings of 28 MPG city and 28 MPG highway.

The 4WD Highlander Hybrid uniquely generates rear-wheel power wîth a separate electric motor (MGR) that provides additional drive torque on demand. Thus, the Highlander Hybrid 4WD-i system does not require power-transfer gearing or a driveshaft from the front. The system electronically varies front and rear torque distribution depending on traction conditions. Activating an EV mode switch located on the front center console allows the driver to operate strictly in electric-mode under certain conditions for a limited distance at low speeds, or in some stop-and-go driving conditions. A new ECON drive mode switch activates a throttle control program that reduces the throttle response during acceleration, enhancing fuel economy. The Hybrid System Indicator in the instrument gauge panel provides the driver wîth a guideline to help maximize fuel consumption.

Exterior

Designed at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, Calif., the second-generation Highlander moves away from traditional SÚV styling cues. Clean, sculpted lines, a wide, stable stance and muscular contours give Highlander a contemporary, dynamic presence. The Base grade Highlander could be mistaken for an upgrade model wîth its six-spoke 17-inch machined alloy wheels, color-keyed power remote outside mirrors, and silver-painted front grille. The Limited looks the luxury part wîth chrome door handles and roof rails, puddle lamps and rear spoiler.

Handling and Ride

The Highlander continues to build on its strength of delivering one of the most capable, smooth and quiet rides in the §egmènt. Four-wheel independent suspension is via MacPherson struts in front and a dual-link strut rear suspension system. Base and SE Highlander models are equipped wîth standard 17-inch alloy wheels wîth 245/65 R17 tires; the Limited features standard 19-inch alloy wheels wîth 245/55 R19 tires. Styling features on the inside of the Highlander Hybrid include a silver and wood grain-style interior trim wîth chrome door handle accents, Optitron meters wîth blue graphics and a power meter wîth a hybrid system indicator. The headrests are adjustable in two ways on the Base grade and four different ways on SE and Limited.

The second row provides 40/20/40 split seatbacks. The seat functions as either a three-person bench or, by removing the Center Stow™ seat, a pair of captain’s chairs complete wîth armrests, creating a convenient walk-through area between the seats for easier access to the third row. A Center Stow™ center console can also be placed between the seats to provide additional storage. The second row also slides fore and aft and reclines. Access to the third-row is made easy by placing the walk-in lever at an easy to reach position at the bottom of the passenger-side second-row seat. Standard one-touch levers inside the cargo area allow the second-row seats to fold forward and flat. The third-row seats function in a similar manner, using a lever in the back of the seat. Production of the conventional engine Highlander, Toyota’s 12th North American-built model, began in October 2009 at the company’s plant in Princeton, Indiana. Moving the Highlander assembly line to this facility represented a $450 million investment.

Comfort and Convenience

This system integrates operation of enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Electric Power Steering (EPS) and the anti-lock brake system (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA). Enhanced VSC helps the driver maintain control by automatically adjusting engine output and braking force at each wheel under certain conditions while also providing §teering assistance in the appropriate direction through Electric Power Steering (EPS). Gasoline Highlander models are also equipped wîth a straight-line §teering feature. When varying traction causes ABS to apply different left/right braking force, the system can apply §teering torque to help offset left/right pull. The Highlander Hybrid employs the advanced Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM is designed to enhance handling, traction and braking systems that normally react to vehicle driving conditions by anticipating tire slippage before a skid, slide or wheel spin occurs and helps to make corrections in a smooth, progressive way.

In addition to integrating all of the Highlander’s dynamic control systems (VSC, TRAC, BA, EPS, EBD and ABS), the VDIM system also employs powerful proprietary software to integrate the Electronic Throttle Control wîth intelligence (ETC-i) and Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB). All Highlander models incorporate a corner-braking feature. Harnessing the integration of the vehicle’s dynamic control systems, this feature limits brake pressure on inside wheels during cornering to help enhance control through the turn. Standard on all models, Hill-Start Assist Control helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward from a stop by applying braking pressure for approximately two seconds. Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is standard equipment on all gas 4WD models. The DAC feature is designed to maintain a constant speed and maintain handling and §teering control by reducing wheel lock under braking even at slow speeds on slippery descents.

More than 70 percent of Venza’s components come from North American suppliers.

Exterior

The Venza is built on a generous 109.3-in. wheelbase and has an overall length of 189 inches and height of 63.4 inches. Toyota engineers minimized vehicle height while maximizing head room. The Venza design team’s development focus was to create a new vehicle that shifted away from traditional SÚV styling themes. Calty designers leaned toward a sleek sedan-like concept with a wide stance that featured a sporty exterior, but also included important SÚV attributes, such as cargo space, towing capability and available all-wheel drive performance.

The Venza sports an aerodynamic shape with short overhangs, forward A-pillar, crisp character lines, and a low roofline. Continuous brushstroke lines run from the front grille to the D-pillar. A bold front end features a distinctive grille, headlights and fog lamps for a sporty yet refined appearance. From behind, Venza’s sophisticated and confident appearance is completed with an angled rear hatch, spoiler and wide wraparound taillights that interconnect with the hatch door. Tight tire-to-body gaps contribute to the sophisticated, refined appearance. The Venza design offers much practicality. For example, the rear load-in height is almost as low as that of the Sienna family van’s. An available power liftgate with jam protection that detects obstruction in the door’s path and reverses the motor. Venza’s sweeping rocker panels provide a lower step-over height for improved ergonomics. The generously sized liftgate opening enhances the vehicle’s utility.

Safety

Toyota’s STAR Safety System is standard on all Venza models and features ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) systems with a cutoff switch, and Brake Assist. VSC automatically adjusts engine output and the vehicle’s braking force at each wheel to help control loss of traction during cornering. TRAC helps maintain traction during challenging driving conditions. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, Brake Assist supplements the applied braking power until the driver releases the pedal. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), also standard on all Venza models, temporarily provides pressure to the brakes while the vehicle is stopped on an incline to help ensure easy starting with no rollback.

Venza’s comprehensive array of standard safety features provides seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. Front seat belt pretensioners retract the seat belt in a severe frontal collision, while the dual-stage force limiters help limit the seat belt force applied to the driver and passenger’s chests. Driver and front passenger seats employ active headrests. If the vehicle is struck from the rear, a cable-actuated mechanism will move the headrest upward and forward to help limit movement of the occupant’s head.
