2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Sedan

The 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom sedans get a slightly revised grille with a smoother appearance. Regular- and Extended-Wheelbase versions are offered; the latter adds 10 inches of wheelbase and overall length. Both seat 5 and have unique rear-hinged rear doors; a 4-passenger configuration with rear center console is optional.

The only powertrain is a 453-horsepower 6.75-liter V12 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety equipment includes ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front-side airbags, and curtain-side airbags.

An extensive list of standard and optional features is offered, and buyers can custom-order colors and interior materials through Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke program. This evaluation of the 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan and Phantom Extended-Wheelbase sedan is based on preview test drives.

2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom Sedan

The 2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan is expected to see few changes after receiving a minor front-end facelift for 2009. Regular- and Extended-Wheelbase versions will likely continue; the latter adds 10 inches of wheelbase and overall length.

It’s expected that the current extensive list of standard and optional features will continue to be offered, as will Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke program, which allows buyers to custom order colors and interior materials.

2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe

The 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom lineup gains a Coupe version of the existing Drophead Coupe (convertible). Both are 2-door models that are based on the larger Phantom sedan but are about 10-inches shorter, seat four, and have unique rear-hinged power-closing doors. The Drophead Coupe has a power soft top; the Coupe is optionally available with interior headliner lighting that imitates the look of a star-filled night sky.

A 453-hp 6.75-liter V12 is the only engine offered and it’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety equipment includes ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system. The Coupe has front side airbags and curtain side airbags; the Drophead Coupe has front side airbags designed to protect the head and torso, along with rear rollover bars that deploy in an impending tip.

An extensive list of standard and available features include chrome 21-inch wheels, stainless-steel hood and windshield surround, and for the Drophead coupe, a teak tonneau cover. This evaluation of the Coupe and Drophead Coupe is based on preview test drives.

2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost

The 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, known in concept form as the 200EX or RR4, is a new 4-door, 5-passenger, rear-drive sedan scheduled to go on sale in late 2009. Although it has often been billed as a smaller, “entry-level” companion to the make’s larger Phantom sedan, it’s really more of a smaller, higher-performance offering.

Compared with the Phantom, the Ghost is shorter in wheelbase by about 11 inches and in overall length by 17, making it about half-a-foot longer than the Bentley Continental Flying Spur or Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan. Carried over from the Phantom are rear-hinged rear doors. The sole powertrain is a 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

An official horsepower figure has not yet been released, but Rolls-Royce claims it will be “upwards of 500″; by contrast, the Phantom’s 6.75-liter V12 makes 453 horsepower. Other details are forthcoming, but expect a full complement of luxury and safety features, along with a Bespoke program that allows buyers to tailor colors and materials to their taste.
