2008 Mercedes-Benz CL Class

The flagship Mercedes-Benz CL coupe line for 2008 adds two hot new models from the company’s AMG high-performance division. Joining the CL550 and CL600, the new V8-powered CL63 AMG and the 12-cylinder CL65 AMG models bring even greater performance to the CL coupe family. The CL65 AMG is powered by a 6.0 liter bi-turbo V12 engine that produces 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque for zero-to-60-mph acceleration of just 4.2 seconds. The new CL65 AMG also features an AMG-developed high-performance braking system that can bring the car to a stop from 60 mph in 116 feet.

Forty of the CL65 AMG coupes will be produced as 40th Anniversary Editions, wîth 20 models destined for the Ú.S. market. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of AMG, the CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary Edition is the first-ever production car finished in exclusive AMG Liquid Metal paint. Stretched over the body like a metallic skin, AMG Liquid Metal shows off the compelling lines of the large coupe better than any conventional paint. Made possible by pigment particles that measure only 30 to 50 nanometers (conventional pigments are between 100 and 300), AMG Liquid Metal reflects light more intensely, and is protected by a clear coating wîth enhanced scratch resistance.

Distinctive skirts under the doors and V12 BITÚRBO lettering enhance the front fenders, while a muscular rear apron wîth a black air diffuser insert and twin V12-design tailpipes complete the eye-catching look of the limited-edition CL65 AMG. Inside, the CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary Edition comes wîth Nappa leather seats finished in diamond pattern stretching wîth embossed V12 logos in the front head restraints as well as a color-coordinated Alcantara headliner, complemented by genuine carbon fiber interior trim. To underscore its exclusivity, ’40th Anniversary’ lettering appears on the center console, and a ‘One Out of 40′ badge is mounted on the hand rest of the COMAND controller.

Price: $103,600 – 295,000.
Invoice: $96,350 – 274,350.

Performance

While the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that powers all CL65 AMG coupes produces 604 horsepower and an astounding 738 lb-ft of torque, the super-smooth twelve-cylinder powerplant is also ideally suited for relaxed cruising. The CL65 AMG’s powerful engine features a number of high-tech modifications, including a precision-balanced longer-stroke crankshaft, larger-bore forged pistons and beefier bearings and oil-spray cooling system. The twelve-cylinder engine is assembled by hand at the AMG engine facility in Affalterbach, Germany. The ‘one-man, one-engine’ philosophy at AMG is symbolized by a signature plate on the engine that bears the name of the master technician who assembled the engine.

To handle the high power output of the AMG twin-turbo engine, the front brakes of the AMG 12-cylinder model are equipped wîth high-performance twin sliding calipers. A world first, this new technology combines the advantages of a floating caliper – lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and enhanced comfort – wîth the performance of a large fixed caliper. The CL65′s composite brake discs measure 15.4 inches in diameter up front and 14.4 inches in the rear.

These immense brakes are also vented and cross-drilled for effective cooling and short stopping distances, even from high speeds. At the rear, frame-type sliding calipers do the work. High-performance tires – 255 / 35 ZR 20 in front and 275 / 35 ZR 20 at the rear – are mounted on forged 20-inch AMG twin-spoke wheels – 8.5 inches up front and 9.5 in the rear. While all CL-Class models are equipped wîth ABC active suspension that offers an unparalleled combination of ride quality and handling agility, the CL65 AMG is equipped wîth special AMG spring struts wîth firmer damping. Reworked dynamic systems such as ESP stability control and ASR traction control complement the enhanced chassis setup.

Styling

The new CL63 AMG can be identified by unique body styling, alloy wheels, sports suspension and high-performance brake system – all designed by AMG specifically for this new model. When equipped wîth the AMG Performance Package, the CL63 can achieve an electronically-limited top speed of 186 mph on 20′ twin-spoke alloy wheels. A muscular front bumper wîth large air intakes houses round fog lights ringed in chrome, and a ’6.3 AMG’ badge marks each front fender.

Contoured side skirts carry the aggressive lines of the front bumper to the rear, where an AMG rear apron emphasizes the width of the vehicle. A pair of twin tailpipes completes the exclusive look and sound of the new models. Inside the CL63 AMG, drivers are greeted by an AMG sport §teering wheel wîth distinctive aluminum shift paddles and AMG multi-contour leather sport seats finished in special piping. Completing the interior package is an exclusive analog clock based on the design of the ‘IWC-Ingenieur’ series in the center of the dashboard.

Engine

The new CL63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V8 that produces 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever, the high-rpm engine boasts a wealth of exciting features derived from AMG’s highly successful racing efforts. Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the new engine features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket-type cam followers (rather than rocker arms), and a variable intake manifold. Designed exclusively by AMG, the engine shares no parts wîth other Mercedes-Benz V8 engines. A first for a production engine, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders.

Suspension and Brakes

The CL63 AMG suspension and brake systems are designed for high-performance driving. AMG makes good use of the Mercedes-Benz ABC active suspension, tuning it for even flatter cornering and less body movement when accelerating and braking. A Sport-Comfort-Manual button on the center console allows the driver to choose between the three different transmission shift programs that also fine-tune accelerator pedal response and sport-suspension spring and shock absorber settings. The AMG twin sliding calipers on the front brakes combine the performance of a large fixed caliper wîth the distinct advantages of a floating caliper –lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and better ride comfort. Large composite brake discs — 15.4 inches in diameter up front and 14.4 inches in the rear – help ensure short stopping distances even during high-speed driving.

The CL63 AMG sedan comes wîth 20-inch staggered-width AMG light alloy wheels, 8.5 inches wide in front and 9.5 inches at the rear, wearing low-profile 255/35 (front) and 275/35 (rear) tires. The launch of the new-generation CL coupe marked the debut of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® brake. The company that invented SRS, the crumple zone, ABS anti-lock brakes, traction control and ESP stability control also launched PRE-SAFE on the S-Class sedan in 2002. On the new CL, PRE-SAFE, in combination wîth the Distronic Plus system, now also comes wîth the ability to automatically apply partial braking in certain types of emergencies.

Standard on all CL coupe models, the revolutionary PRE-SAFE® system automatically tightens the front seat belts during those valuable seconds just before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat (and optional power rear seats) move to positions that can provide better protection. If the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof closes as well. Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags, and special seat cushions can inflate to provide greater lateral support for occupants and to help the side air bags provide even better collision protection. Mercedes-Benz engineers conducting simulator tests discovered that many drivers don’t push the brake pedal hard enough in emergency braking, a discovery that led to the development of Brake Assist, standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles since late 1990s. Brake Assist has proven itself a million times, and tests show vehicles equipped wîth Brake Assist are involved in 26 percent fewer accidents.

On the latest CL coupe, an enhanced version of the Mercedes-Benz Brake Assist system not only supplies appropriate braking assist in emergencies as soon as the driver applies the brake pedal, but also measures the distance to the vehicle ahead (thanks to Distronic Plus) and adjusts brake pressure if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. While Brake Assist is only triggered by the driver’s reaction on the brake pedal, Brake Assist Plus also considers the closing speed of the vehicle ahead based on radar signals from the Distronic Plus system. In extensive tests conducted by Mercedes researchers using 300 drivers, the integrated system reduced rear collisions in heavy city traffic by 75 percent. During testing, data recorders and video cameras documented more than 250,000 real-world miles covered by 200 drivers in the Ú.S. and Europe, while 100 drivers participated in months of intense testing on the DaimlerChrysler driving simulator in Berlin.

2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan has been completely redesigned for 2008. With the exception of its two available engines and three-pointed star, everything is new and improved. There are also more standard features this year. An all-new C63 AMG model debuts later in the model year.

Price: $31,600 – 53,800.
Invoice: $29,385 – 50,035.

Introduction

Since the Mercedes-Benz C-Class’ last full redesign in 2001, the entry-level luxury sedan landscape has changed dramatically. Newer models have been offering ever higher levels of creature comforts and driving excitement. As such, Mercedes’ entry-level car has been at an increasing disadvantage, with its small backseat, uninspiring handling and ordinary cabin furnishings being the notable drawbacks. American consumers would seem to agree, with the C-Class’ archnemesis, the BMW 3 Series, outselling the C-Class by a considerable margin last year.

Mercedes-Benz’s cavalry arrives this year in the form of the fully redesigned 2008 C-Class. It’s meant to address many of the previous car’s faults. The wheelbase has been stretched slightly, improving interior space, especially in the rear seat. It’s not a massive gain, but the resulting cabin is certainly larger and feels airier than it did before. The C-Class interior also benefits from new features, including a very impressive optional hard-drive-based navigation and surround-sound audio system, along with a much-improved version of the COMAND interface. As before, there are Sport and Luxury trim levels, but this year Mercedes has put in extra effort to make the trims more distinctive. The C300 and C350 Sport models feature more aggressive exterior styling and suspension tuning than the classically styled C300 Luxury. Inside, this sort of differentiation continues, with the materials and overall ambience tailored specifically to each version.

Underneath, the C-Class’ basic suspension design is the same as the previous model, but the components are lighter for improved handling and ride comfort. Steering feel and quickness have also been noticeably improved. Thankfully, high-speed stability and a comfortable ride, qualities always associated with Mercedes-Benz, are still intact. Mercedes-Benz has chosen to carry over last year’s V6 engines and will again offer all-wheel drive. Notably, there will be a new AMG model coming out in the spring or summer of calendar-year 2008. It features a 6.2-liter V8 and the usual high-performance modifications to improve handling and braking.

Overall, the new 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a welcome improvement. The distinct Luxury and Sport trims should help attract a wide array of new and traditional buyers, while the interior is now fully up to date in terms of features and design. Plus, the 457-horsepower C63 AMG is bound to give the vaunted M3 a serious run for its money. However, the C-Class still exists in an incredibly competitive segment. Audi, BMW, Infiniti and Lexus (among others) offer very good luxury performance sedans, which are often less expensive and more powerful than a comparatively equipped Benz. All of these cars deserve a long look, but with its mix of driving involvement, comfort and high-tech goodies, the all-new C-Class is a fine choice for an entry-luxury sedan.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is an entry-level luxury sedan available in five trim levels. The C300 Luxury and C300 Sport share the same engine, but differ in exterior styling elements, interior trim, front seat design and standard transmission. Both C300 trims’ standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, a sunroof, eight-way power front seats, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, MB-Tex cloth upholstery, the COMAND control interface with a pop-up display screen, Bluetooth connectivity and a CD stereo with an auxiliary audio jack. The C300 4Matic Luxury and C300 4Matic Sport trim levels feature exactly the same features but add all-wheel drive.

All C300s can be equipped with the Premium I Package that adds rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, heated front seats and satellite radio. In terms of standard equipment, the C350 Sport is essentially a C300 Sport with the Premium I Package and black bird’s-eye maple wood interior trim. Options available on all five C-Class trim levels are the Premium II Package that adds split-folding rear seats, a power rear window sunshade and bi-xenon headlamps. The Multimedia Package includes a hard-drive-based navigation system, voice controls and a premium Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system that adds an in-dash six-CD changer. Stand-alone options include leather upholstery, a panorama sunroof, TeleAid satellite communications, 18-inch wheels, an iPod integration kit and the in-dash CD changer.

Interior Design and Special Features

Although beautifully crafted, the C-Class cabin can come off as a little austere and a bit bland. The previous and awkward-to-use version of Mercedes’ COMAND system has been replaced by a smart new iteration that combines physical dash buttons with a mouselike controller and a large LCD screen that pops out of the dash upon startup. When equipped with the Multimedia Package, the C-Class is transformed into a mobile sound studio — and movie theater. A built-in hard drive not only powers the navigation system, it can also store up to 4GB (almost 1,000 songs) of MP3 files. With the car in park, the car can also play DVDs through the pop-up LCD screen and superb Logic 7 surround-sound system. The 2008 C-Class has grown up only ever so slightly from the last generation, so it’s still on the small side compared to others in its class. Trunk capacity is 12.4 cubic feet, which can be expanded with the optional split-folding rear seats.

Powertrains and Performance

All 2008 C300 models are powered by a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 228 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic is standard on the C300 Luxury and optional on the C300 Sport, which comes with a six-speed manual. Mercedes estimates a 0-60-mph time of around 7 seconds. All C-Class models come standard with rear-wheel drive except for the C300 4Matics, which are all-wheel-drive.

The C350 Sport is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The seven-speed automatic is the only transmission choice. In track testing, we clocked the C350 from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which is certainly quick, but unremarkable compared to the BMW 335i and Infiniti G35. Mercedes estimates fuel economy to be 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the C350 and 18/25 mpg for a rear-drive C300 with an automatic transmission.

Driving Impressions

In a straight line, the new 2008 Mercedes-Benz C300 and C350 are no quicker than the cars they replace. However, the C-Class’ substantially revised chassis has dramatically improved the steering’s precision and feel. There’s now useful information channeled through the chunky steering wheel. In terms of overall dynamics, this C-Class comes closer to the vaunted BMW 3 Series than ever before. Despite its sportier character, the C-Class is never harsh on the road, and gobbles up miles of freeway with aplomb. The C300 Luxury rides a little softer than the Sport versions and has a quieter exhaust system, resulting in a more serene driving environment.

Safety

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class comes with a full load of standard safety equipment, including front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, active front head restraints, stability control, traction control and adaptive antilock brakes that feature brake assist, brake drying, pre-pressure and hill-start assist.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S Class

The light-weight, high-capacity lithium-ion battery works wîth a 20-horsepower electric motor and a 275-hp V6 gasoline engine to provide hybrid power wîth impressive fuel economy estimated at 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The company’s flagship sedan, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is viewed in many circles as the finest car in the world. The S400 HYBRID joins the restyled 2010 S-Class line, which includes the 382-hp V8-powered S550 and all-wheel-drive S550 4MATIC as well as the high-performance 518-hp S63 AMG. V12 cars include the 510-hp S600 and the 604-hp S65 AMG.

Price: $87,950 – 201,150.
Invoice: $81,795 – 187,075.

Engine

Mercedes-Benz engineers optimized the 3.5-liter V6 engine for good fuel economy by taking advantage of the Atkinson principle. By delaying the closing of each intake valve, the intake stroke effectively becomes longer than the compression stroke, increasing thermal efficiency, which reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Although Atkinson engines inherently produce less low-speed torque and throttle response, they are ideal for hybrid vehicles because the electric motor compensates for this disadvantage by working wîth the V6 to provide excellent throttle response on acceleration. The Atkinson-cycle V6 engine has different cylinder heads, pistons and camshafts as well as modified variable valve timing control and a low-load oil pump for good fuel economy.

Styling

All S-Class sedans for 2010 feature freshened styling that includes a more streamlined front grille, larger outside mirrors and a new front bumper wîth a chrome strip below the air intakes. New active bi-xenon headlights include LED turn signals along the lower edge. All S-Class models except the S400 HYBRID now come wîth LED daytime running lights on each side of the bumper. Other exterior changes include LED tail lights and exhaust outlets integrated within a recontoured rear bumper. Inside, the 2010 S-Class comes wîth an upgraded wood / premium-leather §teering wheel. Standard ambient lighting can be selected in three hues – polar (ice-blue), neutral (white) and solar (amber). A rear-seat entertainment system is now also available.

Fuel Economy

The new Mercedes-Benz S400 HYBRID uses a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, a magneto-electric motor and sophisticated hybrid electronics to produce 30 percent better fuel economy than a comparable S550 model. Not only does the electric motor make 20 horsepower, but it also produces an impressive starting torque of 118 lb.-ft., while the gasoline engine develops 275 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. A powerful computer controls the hybrid system, recalculating the best operating mode 160 times a second. Capable of up to 50 million calculations per second, the system works to maintain an ideal balance between fuel economy and performance.

The 120-volt lithium-ion battery weighs less than most other batteries and takes up less space, but has high energy density for its size. As a result, it can be installed in the engine compartment, so the car’s ample trunk capacity and spacious interior are not affected. The lithium-ion battery has a high-strength steel housing, a separate cooling circuit, and its cells sit in a special gel that dampens any jolts and vibration. Characterized as a ‘mild hybrid,’ the S400 HYBRID’s gasoline engine and electric motor work together for responsive performance, and its driveline includes a specially configured seven-speed automatic transmission, a transformer to power the 12-volt vehicle system and intelligent operating electronics. The disc-shaped electric motor is mounted in the torque converter housing, between the engine and transmission.

The hybrid system includes a convenient start-stop function that turns off the gasoline engine below nine mph when braking to a stop. When the S400 HYBRID is at a traffic light, for example, the gasoline engine is off, but the AC compressor and §teering pump are operated electrically, so air conditioning and power §teering are fully operational. When the brakes are released, the gasoline engine is started automatically, and works wîth the electric motor for seamless performance. During braking, the electric motor acts as a generator, recovering kinetic energy and storing it in the lithium-ion battery. Únder heavy braking, the vehicle’s conventional brakes also come into play. Recovered energy is stored in the battery and re-used whenever the electric motor is running.

Convenience or Roominess

The S400 HYBRID has the same interior room, luxury and convenience features as other S-Class vehicles. The new model is differentiated by unique seven-twin-spoke 18-inch wheels and HYBRID logos on the trunk lid and dash as well as BlueEfficency badging on the front fenders. A special hybrid pictogram within the speedometer shows the energy flow, energy recovery and battery charge.

Inside and Out

The S63 AMG comes wîth special body styling, alloy wheels, sports suspension and high-performance brake system – all designed by AMG. A muscular front bumper wîth large air intakes houses LED daytime running lights trimmed in chrome, and a ’6.3 AMG’ badge enhances each front fender. Contoured side skirts carry the aggressive lines of the front bumper to the rear, where an AMG rear apron emphasizes the width of the vehicle. A pair of twin tailpipes completes the exclusive look and sound of the S63 AMG. Inside the S63 AMG, drivers are greeted by an AMG sport §teering wheel wîth distinctive aluminum shift paddles and AMG multi-contour leather sport seats. Completing the interior package is an exclusive analog clock modeled on the design of the ‘IWC-Ingenieur’ series in the center of the dashboard.

The S63 AMG suspension and brake systems are designed for high-performance driving. AMG makes good use of the Mercedes-Benz ABC active suspension, tuning it for even flatter cornering and less body movement when accelerating and braking. A Sport-Comfort-Manual button on the center console allows the driver to choose between three different transmission shift programs that also fine-tune accelerator pedal response. The driver can also choose a separate Sport function for the ABC active suspension.

Power

Turning to the V12-powered half of the S-Class family, the S600 marks the renaissance of the legendary 600-Class ‘Grand Mercedes.’ Fitted wîth greater levels of wood and leather trim, the V12-powered flagship comes wîth virtually all S-Class options as standard equipment. Powered by a twin-turbo V12 engine that generates 510 horsepower and an astonishing 612 lb.-ft. of torque, the S600 model blends the whisper-smooth performance of the flagship Mercedes-Benz four-door sedan wîth the astonishing power of a twin-turbo V12 engine. At the same time, the bi-turbo V12 comes clothed in refinement that defines this rarified market §egmènt. The 60-degree V12 engine provides effortless thrust wîth turbine-like smoothness, featuring a vast torque band wîth peak torque beginning as low as 1,800 rpm. With the high-tech engine, Direct-Select five-speed transmission and state-of-the art aerodynamics, the new S600 can reach 60 miles per hour in less than 4.5 seconds, quicker than many sports cars.

Brake

Standard on all S-Class models except the new S400 HYBRID, a new Torque Vectoring feature within the ESC stability control system is specifically designed to sharpen §teering response during spirited driving. When sharp, aggressive §teering inputs from the driver are sensed, brief braking pulses at the inside rear wheel help pivot the vehicle and improve active handling response.

Safety

ll cars equipped wîth the radar-based DISTRONIC PLÚS system reap the benefit of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® Brake. To reduce accident severity, the latest version of PRE-SAFE Brake applies full braking automatically in emergencies. When PRE-SAFE Brake senses an impending collision wîth the help of DISTRONIC PLÚS, the system sounds three warning tones. About 1.6 seconds before impact is likely, partial braking is automatically initiated, and PRE-SAFE occupant protection measures are activated. If the driver still fails to react, full-power braking is initiated about 0.6 seconds before the collision, reducing the impact and effectively acting as an ‘electronic crumple zone.’

PRE-SAFE Brake builds on the original PRE-SAFE system that Mercedes-Benz launched on the S-Class sedan in 2002. Standard on all S-Class models, the ‘basic’ PRE-SAFE® system automatically tightens the front seat belts during those valuable seconds just before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat (and optional power rear seats) move to positions that can provide better protection. If the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof closes as well. Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags, and special seat cushions can inflate to provide greater lateral support for occupants and to help the side air bags provide even better collision protection. The Distronic Plus system also includes Blind Spot Assist, which monitors both blind spots behind the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated wîth a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings.

The radar-based Distronic Plus also makes possible a new feature as part of the Parktronic system – Parking Guidance, which utilizes six radar sensors mounted behind the front and rear bumpers. At low speeds, the system scans available parking spaces and displays a ‘P’ in the dash if the car will fit in the space. When the car’s in reverse, Parking Guidance displays a top-view pictogram of the car and provides helpful §teering guidance. For the 2010 model year, S-Class models wîth ABC active suspension come wîth a new crosswind stabilization feature that’s part of the ABC system software. If the car is affected by a crosswind, in a split-second, the ABC system uses its suspension servo pistons at each wheel strut to change wheel load distribution and stabilize the car. The ABC crosswind stabilization feature depends on networked signals from the ESC yaw and lateral-acceleration sensors.

Traffic System

The DISTRONIC PLÚS adaptive cruise control system uses radar sensors to help maintain a pre-set following distance behind the vehicle ahead. The latest system can actually brake the car to a full stop and accelerate it again. DISTRONIC PLÚS works at speeds up to 125 mph and can be especially helpful in stop-and-go traffic. Short-range 24-gigahertz radar sweeps the first 33 yards in a fan-shaped 80-degree pattern, working in tandem wîth a narrower nine-degree beam of 77-gigahertz radar.

The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 160 yards – more than 1½ football fields. Parktronic wîth Parking Guidance utilizes eight ultrasonic sensors mounted behind the front and rear bumpers. At low speeds, the system scans available parking spaces and displays a ‘P’ in the dash if the car will fit in the space. When the car’s in reverse, Parking Guidance displays a top-view pictogram of the car and provides helpful §teering guidance.

Convenience or Roominess

The S400 HYBRID has the same interior room, luxury and convenience features as other S-Class vehicles. The hybrid model is differentiated by unique ten-spoke 18-inch wheels and HYBRID logos on the trunk lid and dash as well as BlueEfficency badging on the front fenders. A special hybrid pictogram within the speedometer shows the energy flow, energy recovery and battery charge.

In addition to the new Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist systems, many innovative safety features are available on the S-Class sedan. (concept carz) The optional PRE-SAFE Brake system has full 100-percent braking in emergencies, and models fitted wîth ABC active suspension include crosswind stabilization.

Safety

New safety options for the 2011 S-Class line include Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist that both incorporate automatic ESP brake intervention. Active Lane Keeping Assist recognizes lane markings (thanks to a multi-purpose camera in the windshield and a computer that analyzes the images) and alerts the driver by simulating rumble strip vibrations in the §teering wheel if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on. Active Blind Spot Assist monitors both blind spots behind the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated wîth a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings. Both Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist now incorporate an intervention feature, in which ESP braking automatically helps correct the car’s course if the driver doesn’t heed the initial warning.

The 2011 S-Class sedans are also available wîth an innovative Splitview dual-content viewscreen, which allows the driver and front passenger to view two different programs on the same screen at the same time. For example, the driver can be viewing the navigation system, while on the very same display screen, the passenger (lòòking from a different angle) is watching a movie. Standard Adaptive Highbeam Assist uses a windshield-mounted camera to detect both headlights and taillights, then softly and automatically transitions between high and low beams to avoid dazzling other drivers. With this system, the range of the headlights can be infinitely varied from 220 feet to up to 1,000 feet.

Night View Assist PLÚS allows a driver to see pedestrians up to 325 feet earlier than before. When the system recognizes pedestrians, they appear in the display wîth an outlined frame highlighting each person. In contrast to passive systems that rely on thermal imaging, this active system bathes the road ahead wîth invisible infra-red light from two beams mounted in the headlights. Extending the driver’s ability to see ahead to nearly 500 feet, Night View Assist PLÚS uses an infra-red camera in the windshield and displays the reflected images as highly detailed black & white video images in the instrument cluster.

All cars equipped wîth the optional radar-based DISTRONIC PLÚS system reap the benefit of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® Brake.

Fuel Efficiency

Valve timing is automatically adjusted by electro-hydraulic vane-type adjusters on the end of each camshaft. At partial throttle, the adjusters keep the exhaust valves open as the intake valves are opening, using this valve overlap for internal exhaust gas recirculation, reducing exhaust emissions and improving fuel economy. Approaching full throttle, the camshaft adjustment optimizes valve timing for maximum power.Tumble flaps in the intake passages near the combustion chamber pivot open under partial load, improving combustion by creating additional turbulence around the intake valve and in the combustion chamber. During higher engine loads such as full throttle, the tumble flaps are completely recessed in the wall of the intake manifold.

While better combustion helps improve engine torque, the primary purpose of the tumble flaps is to further increase fuel economy, and tests show that the tumble flaps boost gas mileage by nearly two percent.Variable valve timing gets a lot of credit for the engine’s unusually broad torque curve, and a two-stage magnesium intake manifold plays a key role as well. Below engine speeds of 3,500 rpm a set of flaps in the manifold close off short intake passages, forcing intake air to take a much longer route into the engine. This creates pressure waves that help the intake process and improve torque. At higher engine speeds the flaps open and intake air flows the shortest distance to the combustion chambers, helping to make more horsepower.

Fuel Economy

The diesel-powered GL350 BlueTEC delivers impressive performance, low exhaust emissions and great fuel economy. With 210 hp and a whopping 400 lb-ft. of torque, the GL350 BlueTEC features an innovative V6 diesel engine wîth the torque of a V8 and the fuel economy to rival some four-cylinders. Equipped wîth the latest CDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) technology, this electronically injected diesel engine is changing consumers’ dated perceptions about diesels.

BlueTEC diesel technology is helping to expand the company’s already broad product portfolio in the Ú.S. market. In addition, Mercedes-Benz’ pioneering role in modern diesel engines is playing a key role in the company’s future products that could also include hybrids, advanced piston engines and fuel cells. With an EPA highway fuel mileage rating of 23 miles per gallon, the seven-seat SÚV also boasts impressive cruising range – up to 600 miles at highway speeds. What’s more, V8-like pulling power makes the GL350 BlueTEC ideal for towing when it’s equipped wîth an optional 7,500-lb. Class IV trailer hitch.

Interior

All GL sport utilities are fitted wîth real wood trim, eight-way power front seats and a Panorama sunroof over the third-row seats. The two third-row seats can be stowed electrically at the push of a button, either separately or together, to provide a totally flat cargo floor for 43.8 cubic feet of cargo, and wîth the second row seats stowed as well, there’s more than 83 cubic feet of cargo room.

All GL-Class models feature four-wheel independent suspension and height-adjustable Airmatic suspension for unprecedented comfort and handling. With nearly all previous options as standard equipment, the GL550 comes fully loaded wîth the latest innovations in occupant safety and creature comforts. In addition to its 21-inch AMG wheels fitted wîth all-season tires, the GL550 can be easily identified by a unique exterior styling treatment that includes fender flares, chrome trim, infra-red reflecting glass and a larger execution of the Mercedes-Benz star integrated into the front grille.

Power

The GL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter all-aluminum V8 that produces 382 hp and 391 foot-pounds of torque, wîth maximum torque available from 2,800 to 4,800 rpm, providing impressive engine response over a broader RPM range. The 4.6-liter engine in the GL450 and the 5.5 in the GL550 are part of the same engine family that comes wîth four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts in each cylinder bank and variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust valves. The V8s also have ‘tumble flaps’ in the intake for better fuel economy and a two-stage intake manifold that broadens the power curve.

In addition, NECK-PRO active front head restraints move forward nearly two inches and upward by about an inch in the event of a severe rear collision, helping to support the head and reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries. And, a rollover sensor can activate the belt tensioner and curtain air bags if the vehicle senses an imminent rollover.

PRE-SAFE® is a revolutionary safety system that can actually sense an impending collision before it happens and take measures to protect occupants during those valuable seconds before impact. The PRE-SAFE system automatically tightens the front seat belts before a possible impact, and, on some models, the front passenger seat moves to a position that can provide better protection. Side windows close to provide better support for the curtain air bags, and if the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof also closes.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is all-new for 2012. Highlights include a new turbocharged four-cylinder base engine, a “Magic” dimming glass sunroof and an overall design inspired by the new SLS AMG sports car.

Introduction

Now comprehensively redesigned, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz continues its commitment to its hardtop, making this car a luxury convertible in spirit, not a sports car. Besides providing a quieter, more weather-tight cabin and also enhancing security, a hardtop also eliminates the typical wear and tear that a fabric top endures, not to mention the replacement cost. It is luxury with a practical dimension. The most noticeable styling change occurs up front, where a large grille inspired by the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG makes the SLK looks a bit angry now. The car’s overall size and shape are generally the same as before, and underneath the new skin is an updated platform shared with the current (and excellent) C-Class.

The suspension is still tuned to provide more comfort than sport, but with adaptive dampers and sportier tuning, the SLK handles better for 2012. Another notable change concerns the new base model. Dubbed the SLK250, it features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horsepower. That’s less power than the base V6 found in last year’s SLK300, but the torque output is a bit higher, and overall drivability won’t significantly suffer. Most important, fuel economy has improved by about 4 mpg. As for the SLK350, it still has a 3.5-liter V6, but the addition of direct fuel injection results in better fuel economy and more power.

In total, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK takes the strengths of its predecessor and augments them with the same sort of improvements that we’ve seen elsewhere in other refreshed Mercedes models. Build and materials quality have improved, feature content has increased and the interior controls (especially those for more complicated functions) are easier to use. The engines are more efficient, handling is better and that impenetrable feeling of a proper Mercedes-Benz carries on. Unfortunately, its price hasn’t dropped like those of its other recently redesigned siblings.

So is the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK good enough to stay relevant against its arch-rivals from BMW and Porsche? Absolutely. More enthusiastic drivers (say, those who want to shift their own gears), will still probably prefer the Porsche Boxster, though unlike the SLK with its retractable hardtop, it has a traditional soft top. And the BMW Z4 boasts more interior space, more energetic engines, a retractable hardtop and arguably the sexiest roadster styling in its price range. Still, the 2012 SLK holds its own in this impressive company thanks to its combination of styling, comfort and performance.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a two-seat convertible with a retractable hardtop roof. There are SLK250 and SLK350 trim levels, which are primarily differentiated by engine. Standard equipment on the SLK250 includes 17-inch wheels, automatic wipers, LED running lights, auto-dimming rearview and driver mirrors, cruise control, automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats and four-way lumbar adjustment, driver memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, vinyl upholstery, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio and a USB audio jack. The SLK350 gets 18-inch wheels and sun-reflective leather upholstery (optional on the SLK250).

The Premium 1 package adds remote roof activation, heated seats, the “AirScarf” neck-level heating system, and a Harman Kardon sound system with satellite radio and an iPod interface. The Lighting package adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights with washers. Opting for the Multimedia package nets you a larger central screen, a navigation system, voice controls, a six-CD/DVD changer and 10GB of digital music storage. The Distronic Plus package adds adaptive cruise control and Mercedes’ PreSafe crash readiness technology. The Sport package includes 18-inch AMG wheels, styling adjustments and interior ambient lighting. The Dynamic Handling package gets a two-mode adjustable suspension and enhanced brakes. Stand-alone options include parking sensors, a dimming glass roof panel, a wind deflector, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and upgraded leather upholstery.

Powertrains and Performance

The rear-wheel-drive 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 201 hp and 229 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a seven-speed automatic is optional. Mercedes estimates this car will accelerate to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Estimated fuel economy with the automatic transmission is 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK350 gets a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The seven-speed auto is standard. Mercedes estimates a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds and fuel economy of 20/29.

Interior Design and Special Features

As the new SLK’s interior design closely mimics that of the Mercedes SLS, owners of the range-topping supercar may be a little miffed that their car essentially shares the same cabin with Benz’s cheapest sports car. Too bad for them, but SLK owners will enjoy the same restrained dash styling and top-notch materials and construction. Controls are virtually identical to those found throughout the Mercedes lineup, meaning you’re not missing out on functionality or features just because you’ve bought a two-seater.

Retract the roof into the trunk (which retains a useful 6.4 cubic feet from a top-up 10.1), and you’ll find a cabin that’s well insulated from wind thanks to its standard fixed-glass deflector as well as the optional pivoting wind-blocker panels. Heated seats and Mercedes’ clever AirScarf system that blows warm air at your neck will keep you toasty during a crisp autumn drive, while available sun-reflective leather should reduce the always unfortunate summertime butt scorch. The 2012 SLK also offers an optional glass roof panel dubbed “Magic Sky Control Roof” — think of it as the sunroof version of Transitions eyeglass lenses, though the glass darkens at the touch of a button rather than automatically.

Driving Impressions

The SLK has always been more about touring than outright sport. If you want classic, razor-sharp roadster handling, the Porsche Boxster is going to be a better choice. That said, the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK — thanks to its standard sport-tuned suspension calibration, available adaptive dampers and well-sorted steering — is the best-handling SLK to date and delivers quite a few grins around the corners.

In terms of power, the SLK350′s powerful V6 provides the sort of satisfying grunt we’ve come to expect from luxury roadsters, while sounding pretty sweet as well. If the extra cost and mandatory automatic transmission aren’t big deals, it’s certainly the engine to get. However, the SLK250′s turbocharged four-cylinder should be perfectly adequate for many buyers.

Safety

Every Mercedes SLK comes standard with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, knee airbags and side airbags that cover the abdomen and head. Also standard are rollbars and the Attention Assist system, which monitors the driver for signs of inattention or drowsiness. The optional PreSafe system anticipates an imminent crash and automatically takes measures to better secure occupants.

2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

The GL550 front grille and bumpers sport a more contemporary look for the 2011 model year, including a redesigned lower fascia and LED daytime running lights. With similar changes made to the other models last year, all GL models now utilize LED technology for taillights and daytime running lights. Chrome window trim and redesigned front and rear skid plates wîth trapezoidal exhaust pipes complete the fresh exterior look of the GL line. Inside, the luxury SÚVs come wîth ‘saddle’ head restraints for the second- and third-row seats, burl walnut interior trim, a redesigned rear-view mirror wîth an integrated compass and an enhanced instrument cluster.

Price: $60,950 – 84,450.
