ENGINE
The lifeline of this powerfully agile sports car rests underneath the hood thanks to its advanced RENESIS ( Rotary Engine ge nesis – or rebirth of the rotary engine) engine. The Mazda RX-8 remains the only mass produced rotary-powered passenger car in the world. By turning a triangular rotor in a cocoon-shaped combustion chamber, the RX-8′s rotary engine efficiently performs the four processes of intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. The RENESIS engine is remarkably smooth and high revving — all the way to 9,000 rpm (7,500 rpm on Sport A/T–equipped models) — and offers a smaller engine footprint than traditional internal combustion engines (some 60 percent smaller and lighter than a comparably powered V-6, and 40 percent smaller and lighter than a four-cylinder). In fact, the packaging and styling that define the RX-8 would not have been possible had Mazda engineers chosen a conventional piston engine.
Improving upon 40 years of rotary designs, the RENESIS engine features side intake and exhaust ports wîth nearly 30 percent more intake area and twice as much exhaust area than its predecessors. The efficiencies gained through larger intake and exhaust ports exclude the need for forced induction. The RX-8′s normally aspirated 1.3-liter engine might appear diminutive to the untrained eye when compared to large-displacement V-8s or heavyweight V-10s or V-12s. However, through the incredible efficiencies of a rotary powerplant, an advanced three-stage intake system and an electronic throttle, the RENESIS engine delivers smooth, linear power on a grand scale. The 2007 RX-8 does not sacrifice emissions for power, though. Through improvements to the port design, overlap between the intake and exhaust ports has been eliminated, significantly reducing exhaust emissions, improving fuel economy and allowing the car to meet the strict Tier2 Bin 5 Federal emissions classification. The effort made by Mazda engineers to improve emissions is a prime example of the concern for environmental impact maintained throughout the development process.
By placing the powerplant low and far back in the engine bay, in what Mazda calls an advanced front-midship layout, the center of gravity is lowered, which in turn improves vehicle balance. In addition, the fuel tank is placed ahead of the rear axle, and all seating is within the wheelbase and track of the car. Combined, these factors contribute to a perfect 50/50 vehicle weight distribution, low yaw-inertia movement and superb handling characteristics. With such excellent balance, it is little wonder the RX-8 feels right at home on the twists and turns of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, negotiating a tight freeway onramp or in stop-and-go traffic.
SUSPENSION AND STEERING
The RX-8 uses an aluminum double-wishbone front suspension, reducing unsprung weight over the use of steel components. By mounting the upper and lower arms on a highly rigid sub-frame, the long arms ensure linear alignment changes throughout the jounce and rebound of the front wheels. All wheels receive mono-tube gas-filled shock absorbers designed wîth large-diameter internal pistons and valving, which offer excellent road feedback and a smooth ride.
An electric rack-and-pinion power-§teering system transmits just the right amount of road information back to the driver. Mazda engineers have chosen to pursue their own path by using an electric motor for §teering assistance rather than a conventional power-§teering pump. The electric motor provides additional assistance at low speeds to ease parking and reduces §teering assistance at higher speeds to provide greater road feel, responsiveness and feedback. And, in keeping wîth the rest of the development on RX-8, it is far lighter and easier to package than a conventional power-§teering rack.
STYLING
The RX-8′s unique ‘freestyle’ four-door design is proof that a true sports car does not need to sacrifice space or convenience for performance. The advanced design of the rear-hinged rear doors, provides a large door opening, allowing adult-sized passengers to easily enter and exit the vehicle. This design is also advantageous when securing a baby or a small child in the back seat. With a spacious rear seat area providing ample passenger room for four full-size adults, and enough trunk space for a weekend’s worth of luggage, this sports car proves its versatility.
Taut muscular lines give RX-8 the liberating look of an athlete in motion. The muscular styling maintains classic sports car proportions while adding a Zoom-Zoom edge that is unmistakably Mazda. Integrated throughout the exterior is the unique triangular rotor design, which clearly can be seen in the front fascia, head lamps, hood and rear bumper valence. The RX-8′s exterior styling presents a genuine sports car form, while the interior boasts a comfortable and intelligently designed cabin. An extremely low cabin floor allows the seats to be mounted low in the chassis, which, along wîth a low instrument cluster and hood, enhance driver visibility. Mazda designers concentrated on the shape of the front seat backs and the rear seat cushions to ensure adequate rear-seat knee room. Front seat slide-rails are positioned to allow maximum leg room for rear-seat passengers.
The rotary design element is incorporated through the interior of the RX-8 in creative ways, appearing in the seats, center console, shift knob and emergency brake. The stylish cabin also evokes a sense of luxury and high-end quality. Mazda’s design team examined every aspect and component of the interior and has created an elegant, driver-centric atmosphere. Through the use of advanced ergonomic research, Mazda engineers established improper seating posture to be a cause of driver fatigue and built in optimum support in the front seats to help offset discomfort. In addition, the soft blue lighting used in the RX-8′s instrument cluster was found to reduce eye fatigue and strain.
SAFETY
When designing the RX-8, safety was given as much of a priority as was performance. For Mazda, the safety process incorporates both accident avoidance and accident protection. In effect, this approach to safety means the RX-8 can help the driver avoid various dangers and protect occupants in the unfortunate event of a collision. In rollover tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the RX-8 achieved an impressive five-star rating. Mazda engineers integrated numerous active and passive safety elements throughout the car. Active safety features, which require input from the driver, include the use of large ABS-equipped disc brakes on all wheels as well as precise §teering and suspension systems. Dynamic Stability Control (standard on manual transmission cars wîth Sport Package, optional on RX-8s wîth automatic transmissions) delivers a superior level of handling that can be disabled when driving and road conditions allow safe operation.
Passive systems, or those that take effect automatically without the driver’s involvement, also are present throughout the RX-8. Despite the absence of a center B-pillar, the RX-8 has an exceptionally rigid body, accomplished through the use of a series of locking pins, which hold the doors together and bind each door directly into the roof and floor. Integrating the frame components helps dissipate crash energy through the vehicle’s structure.
Other standard passive systems on the RX-8 include front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags. Additionally, the front end and engine bay have ample crumple zones, the front seats are designed to reduce whiplash injuries, the brake pedal is designed to break away in the event of a collision of sufficient force to protect feet and legs and all four seating positions are fitted wîth three-point seatbelts. Even pedestrian protection was considered, as the RX-8 is fitted wîth Mazda’s ‘shock-cone’ hood design that yields more to the impact of a pedestrian onto the hood than a standard design, yet is strong enough to not deform in normal use.
2008 Mazda CX-9
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today debuted the 2007 Mazda CX-9 seven -passenger crossover sport-utility vehicle (SÚV) at the New York International Auto Show. Arriving in Mazda dealerships in early 2007 , the CX-9 is designed and engineered specifically for North America. The Mazda CX-9 provides unique Mazda design and energetic performance as well as an up-market interior wîth class-leading space and unmatched versatility. Price: $29,400 – $34,655.
CHASSIS & BODY
The stiff unibody of the Mazda CX-9 provides a sound foundation for a poised ride and agile handling. Computer-aided-engineering analysis was used to optimize this structure, delivering high torsional and bending rigidity wîth minimal weight. Extra laser welds and adhesive weld bonding have been applied in critical areas for enhanced stiffness. Damping sheets applied to floor areas and acoustic foam filler added to body cavities assure a quiet , high quality cabin environment. In front, the perimeter frame mounted to the unibody through six rubber isolators supports the powertrain, the engine-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion power §teering, and a low friction strut-type suspension system using coil springs. The multilink rear suspension consists of one trailing arm and two lateral locating members per side.
To minimize cargo-compartment intrusion and permit a wider load space, the rear coil spring is positioned between the lower lateral member and the unibody. A damper is located as close as possible to each rear wheel to provide excellent motion control wîth minimal friction. Anti-roll bars at each end maximize agility and control during assertive driving. Twenty-inch, V-rated, low-profile radial tires ( P 245/50R – 20) are standard equipment on the top Grand Touring model while Sports and Touring editions roll on P 245/60R – 18 tires. As a result, CX-9 looks and feels unusually nimble for its size and is the clear class leader for driving pleasure.
EXTERIOR
Many mid-sized crossover SÚVs strive for the utilitarian look. The Mazda CX-9, however, is designed to evoke a strong pride of ownership. Without sacrificing versatility or efficiency, the CX-9 strives for the sophisticated appearance of a vehicle costing two to three times as much. Its smooth and flowing silhouette, prominent wheels and tires, muscular fenders and steeply angled windshield and backlight give the CX-9 a dramatic-but-refined look.
CX-9′s front end is unmistakably Mazda , wîth its elegantly sculpted sporty five-point grille and wide, bold bumper . A horizontal streak of chrome floats on the front grille bar, giving a distinctive and high quality feel. S ide windows form a flowing, open and modern greenhouse, allowing clear vision from all seating positions. The unique trapezoid chrome exhaust pipe accentuates the fine detail put into the design.
INTERIOR
Once inside the CX-9, t he driver is greeted by a neatly organized combination of cylindrical shapes and blacked-out instruments on a T-shaped instrument panel . Brightly edged gauges wîth metal-look trim and indirect blue illumination set a cool mood. Indirect lighting also is embedded in the front and rear door trim and ceiling for a warm glow. Horizontal elements in areas such as the center panel, door trim and seat design intersect wîth vertical accents to create the same harmony present in fine furniture.
Interior craftsmanship and attention to detail is visible everywhere. S oft trim is elegantly configured and constructed of top-quality materials and seats have an inviting yet sporty look and feel appropriate to this type of vehicle. The dash panel houses large, clearly marked entertainment and climate controls. Delicate stitching and the metallic look of the floating door trim-grips reveal the designer’s fine eye for detail.
POWERTRAIN
At the heart of every Mazda lies a spirited engine. The CX-9 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 wîth a preliminary rating of 250-horsepower . Advanced features include dual-overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, a high compression ratio and electronic throttle control. While six-speed automatic transmissions have until now been exclusive to premium-priced SÚVs, the CX-9 provides that desirable feature as standard equipment. The direct benefits to Mazda customers are optimum acceleration and passing performance, coupled wîth excellent highway fuel efficiency.
Drive is either through the front wheels or via Mazda’s advanced A ctive T orque -S plit A ll- W heel D rive system. On all-wheel-drive models, various sensors signal control modules to automatically apportion torque to those wheels most able to provide solid traction. A computer-controlled coupling, connected wîth the rear differential, automatically adjusts the torque distribution, allowing up to 50-percent of the drive power to be sent to the rear wheels, depending on traction conditions. This all-wheel drive system has been especially well received in MAZDASPEED 6 and CX- 7 applications.
The Mazda CX-9′s safety features are highlighted by an advanced Roll Stability Control (RSC) system that uses both body-roll rate and wheel speed sensors to determine when corrective action is necessary. A momentary torque reduction, combined wîth an automatic brake application, assists in restoring the CX-9 to an even keel. Four-wheel disc ventilated brakes include an Anti-lock Brake System ( ABS ) to prevent lockup during emergency use. When excessive wheel slippage is detected, a T raction C ontrol S ystem (TCS) automatically reduces driveline torque to help restore traction. Dynamic S tability C ontrol (DSC) reduces driveline torque and automatically applies one or more brakes to minimize under- or over-steer during emergency maneuvers.
Additional protection is provided by sensor-activated side-curtain airbags which extend from the first to the third row. These inflatable restraints deploy in the event of a lateral collision or a rollover to reduce the likelihood of injury and limb or head ejection. Inflation is maintained for approximately six seconds for maximum effectiveness, although the only way these systems work properly is when used in combination wîth seatbelts. Pretensioner devices automatically remove slack from the belt system immediately after a moderate or greater frontal collision and load limiters are incorporated to provide some give as the occupant moves forward. The CX-9 ‘s front headrests incorporate new design features which are designed primarily to reduce neck injuries during rear impacts. CX-9 ‘s robust unibody uses the Mazda Advanced Impact-Energy Distribution and Absorption System to help protect its cabin from deformation harm in the event of a collision. A combination of large-section members, some made from high-tensile steel, envelope the passenger compartment to absorb impact energy while guarding against intrusion.
2008 Mazda Tribute
Completely redesigned both inside and out for 2008, the new Mazda Tribute makes a powerful statement wîth a bold, tough exterior and a more upscale, comfortable interior. Offering more traditional sport-utility vehicle (SÚV) styling than Mazda’s other SÚVs, CX-7 and CX-9, the 2008 Tribute rounds out the Mazda family of unibody-based crossover SÚVs, making it the perfect choice for buyers in search of traditional, go-anywhere rugged styling. However, even wîth an all-new exterior and interior, Tribute has not lost its trademark Zoom-Zoom – after all, every Mazda has the Soul of a Sports Car inside.
‘By combining the capability and styling of a traditional SÚV wîth the benefits of a crossover, the Tribute has long been a favorite among those shopping for an entry-level SÚV,’ said David Sweet, vehicle line group manager for Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). ‘By maintaining its traditional styling, Tribute complements the all-new Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 and offers Mazda buyers an alternative choice in SÚV functionality.’Now available in three trim levels, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring, Tribute i (2.3-liter four-cylinder) and s (3.0-liter V6) models offer more style, practicality and safety than ever before. A freshened exterior design includes new front and rear fascias, hood, liftgate, power side-view mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, headlamps, taillamps, standard fog lights and a raised beltline.

Offering the highest level of comfort and convenience found in the Tribute lineup, the fully loaded Grand Touring trim comes standard wîth everything found on the Sport and Touring trims, plus much more. Additional standard exterior features include heated side-view mirrors, automatic headlamps and a power-sliding moonroof.
A more sophisticated and cozy interior features leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an AM/FM/six-disc CD audio system wîth seven speakers and auto volume control, retractable cargo cover and leather-wrapped §teering wheel. The Mazda Tribute is an SÚV wîth a capital ‘S.’ Its driver appeal comes from a host of sports-oriented features, including the standard 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, found in the Tribute i. This is a retuned version of the same engine found in the sporty MAZDA6 i sedan, MAZDA3 line and MAZDA5. Its aluminum block and head helps keeps weight down, benefiting handling and improving the power-to-weight ratio.
With 153 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 152 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm, it is one of the most powerful four-cylinder engines in the SÚV market. It is one of the most sophisticated too: light, efficient and refined. Double overhead camshafts improve engine breathing and high-revving response, which in turn improves performance and fuel economy. It also uses a variable induction system that delivers more power when the driver demands it, enhancing torque at lower revs and maximizing power at higher revs. The pistons are lightweight as well, improving throttle response, smoothness and the engine’s ability to rev.
An easy-shifting five-speed manual gearbox, which has short, sporty gear changes, is standard on the Tribute i. It uses multi-cone synchronizers (dual-cone for first and second, single for third through fifth) to reduce shift effort and a cable-shift for improved gear-change precision. The gear lever is positioned at an ideal height on the center console to be as near as possible to the driver’s right hand. A sophisticated four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is available. Built-in ‘logic’ within the shift control keeps the transmission in a lower gear on steep inclines to eliminate the ‘hunting’ many automatics exhibit on steep grades. As wîth the manual gearbox, the automatic’s gear lever is mounted in the center console, for sporty operation. Cruise control is standard on Tribute i models equipped wîth automatic transmissions.
The Tribute s gets more of everything, including a smooth 3.0-liter V6, producing 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a gutsy 193 lb-ft of torque at 4,850 rpm. This engine is a retuned version of the high-performance unit found in the MAZDA6 s lineup. The extra power over the 2.3 means even-more effortless freeway performance and more power for pulling heavy loads. The V6 has aluminum heads and block, for reduced weight – to improve performance and handling – and better structural rigidity, to reduce vibration and improve refinement. As wîth the 2.3 four-cylinder, it uses double overhead camshafts to control the valves and improve engine breathing – which in turn boosts performance and gas mileage. The four-speed automatic transmission is standard.
The Tribute’s sporty behavior also comes from its unibody construction and the fully independent coil-sprung suspension, as used on many sports cars. Many rival SÚVs use truck-like body-on-frame chassis, which flex more and provide a much less stable platform for the suspension. The Tribute’s unibody construction provides superb structural rigidity, improving ride and handling, as well as contributing to fewer rattles and a much tauter driving feel. The fully independent coil sprung suspension – MacPherson struts at the front, multi-link at the rear – ensures each wheel responds independently to road conditions, increasing the sure-footedness of the vehicle, improving handling and road holding. It gives the vehicle more poise in difficult conditions, including at high-speeds and on unpaved surfaces, and also improves ride comfort.
The track, both front (61.1 inches) and rear (60.4 inches) is wide, which also benefits stability, handling and road holding. Nitrogen gas-charged shock absorbers give superb wheel control, on- or off-road, and maintain their composure even after tough use. The Tribute handles like a well-sorted sedan, but wîth all the extra benefits of an SÚV. Another sports car touch is the use of rack-and-pinion §teering for greater §teering precision and response. Variable power assistance means low-speed maneuvering, such as parking, is easy. Yet at higher speeds, reduced power assistance preserves road feel and §teering feedback. New for 2008, Electric Power Steering (EPS), which improves vehicle sensitivity, is standard, and, improves NVH and fuel economy by eliminating the power §teering pump.
All Tributes have 10-inch rear drum brakes and 11.9-inch front disks. The front disc brakes are ventilated for strong heat dissipation, to improve braking performance after repeated use, such as a long downhill stretch wîth many bends. Both Tribute i and s models are equipped wîth standard Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) to prevent wheel lock-up and skids, and to maintain §teering control under braking. The four-channel system is more advanced than a conventional three-channel set-up, as every wheel has its own sensor to provide individual braking control. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) varies the distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels to stop the vehicle as quickly as possible.
2008 Mazda 3
Mazda North American Operations today unveiled an updated and revised version of the MAZDA3 4-Door i and s sedan and 5-Doors at the 2006 Greater New York International Auto Show. MAZDA3 is the company’s best-selling vehicle in North America, and has been a hit wîth customers and media alike. Common features for both the 4-Door s sedan (fitted wîth the 2.3-liter engine) and 5-Door s (on which the 2.3-liter engine is standard) include a body-color front grille and a redesigned front bumper wîth square fog lamps. The 4-Door s sedan now employs LEDs for the rear combination lamps. In addition, 16- and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels have been redesigned to both accentuate the aluminum alloy look and convey an image of stability. Both the 4-Door s sedan and 5-Door s have a more athletic look: the 4-Door promotes a feeling of stability, while the 5-Door is the sportiest model in the MAZDA3 lineup and exudes a youthful personality.
POWERTRAIN
The engine lineup for the MAZDA3 continues to be the MZR 2.0-liter for i models and MZR 2.3-liter on s models, both P-ZEV compliant in California-emission states, Tier 2 Bin 5 in Federal states. All horsepower ratings are now compliant wîth new SAE measuring standards, wîth t he 2.0-liter engine producing 148 hp (144 hp in P-ZEV trim) at 6,500 rpm* and maximum torque of 135 lb-ft (132lb-ft in PZEV trim) at 4,500 rpm*. The 2.3-liter engine now produces 156 hp (151hp in P-ZEV trim) of maximum power at 6,500 rpm* and maximum torque of 150 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm (149 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm in P-ZEV trim)*.
Both 2.0- and 2.3-liter engines continue to employ a high-accuracy electronic throttle control, along wîth sequential valve timing (S-VT). Optimal adjustment of the engine’s intake valve operation in response to running conditions achieves high charging efficiency. Together wîth a variable induction system ( VIS), this allows the engine to achieve powerful torque throughout the whole rev range. A f ive-speed manual transmission remains standard on all models . Also carrying-over is the availability of Sport AT automatic transmissions for the both the 2.0-liter (four-speed) and 2.3-liter (five-speed) and both have functions that allow the driver to sequentially shift gears up or down.
BODY AND CHASSIS
MAZDA3 ‘s body shell has been upgraded by bolstering local rigidity . Front suspension mountings are joined to the fender frame by brackets, and the number 1 tunnel member connecting the transmission tunnel on the body’s underside now extends to the left and right frame side members. These arrangements result in an even stiffer, safer body and even sportier handling and ride control.
The MacPherson strut front suspension has improved damper performance and has been tuned to improve §teering response and reduce understeer. The multi-link rear suspension receives the same performance revisions, ensuring improved rear-end stability during high-speed cornering. In addition , the revised bumpers mean superior aerodynamics contribute to better fuel economy , improved high-speed acceleration and better overall stability.
INTERIOR
Particular attention was paid to revising interior quality on all models. The 2.0-liter 4-Door i sedan features t wo interior colors: beige and black. Both interior color packages receive newly designed white gauges and a zebra-striped wood-finish dash trim. The 2.3-liter s models wîth black interior and blackout-type gauges include a decorative insert finished wîth a hairline treatment in the dash. L eather seating surfaces are available as an option for all s models, and new for 2007 on select exterior colors is a gray cloth interior.
Both 4-Door sedan and 5-Door have newly added rear armrests wîth integrated cup holders for rear seat occupants. For the 4-Door sedan, rear cargo space side and end trim have been modified to allow large loads to be loaded wîth ease. A trunk lid recess on top of the bumper has been added to make it easier to open the trunk lid. Audio systems have been upgraded wîth an auxiliary audio input and 12-volt power outlets are now standard for all models, providing the driver or passenger the option of bringing their own portable audio player to enjoy their favorite music in the car.
SAFETY
Únchanged – but still class-leading – four-wheel disc brakes wîth ventilated discs in the front and solid discs in the rear form the basis for a comprehensive active safety system . Four-wheel ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution ( EBD ) wîth brake assist are standard on s models and are optional on i models . Dynamic stability control (DSC) and traction-control are newly available for s models .
Passive safety systems feature a rigid body shell that provides exceptional collision safety. For occupant protection, front dual airbags are standard, and seat-mounted side and roof-mounted curtain airbags are available as well. In addition, impact-absorbing trim on the §teering column minimizes injury to the driver’s knees and a collapsible brake pedal helps reduce the risk of lower leg injury in the event of a frontal collision .

Invoice: $17,685 – 25,610.
PERFORMANCE
The range-topping 3.0-liter V6 engine has been noted for its strong performance and refinement, producing 212 horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) and 197 lb-ft torque (at 5,000 rpm). The V6 engine is mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Sport A/T automatic wîth manual shift. The MAZDA6 is the only vehicle in its class that offers a six-speed automatic transmission. The wide number of ratios improves performance, drivability, smoothness and gas mileage. The tall top gear also improves comfort and quietness on the freeway, while a short first gear gives aggressive off-the-line performance. These are all examples of MAZDA6′s sports-first philosophy.
The 2.3-liter four-cylinder (I-4) engine used on the MAZDA6 i models produces 156 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 154 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. This highly sophisticated engine uses an aluminum block and head (like the V6 engine) and double overhead camshafts wîth 16 valves for excellent engine peathing and smooth revving. Smoothness and refinement are enhanced by the use of a balance shaft, helping make this four-cylinder engine almost as smooth as a reliable six-cylinder unit. The 2.3-liter engine is specified wîth Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) equipment in the eight states that require California emissions (CA, MA, ME, NY, VT, CT, RI and PA). This makes the 2.3-liter engine 90-percent cleaner than the average new car. Evaporative emissions are completely eliminated by re-engineering the exhaust plumbing, repositioning the first catalytic converter and eco-friendly Electronic Control Únit (ECÚ) programming. All i models are fitted as standard wîth a five-speed manual gearbox, but available wîth a five-speed Sport A/T automatic transmission wîth manual shift mode. The extra gear ratio improves acceleration, cruising refinement and fuel economy.
The MAZDA6 comes standard wîth many safety features including Anti-lock pake System (ABS), Traction Control and side airbags wîth side curtains on all models and trims. ABS helps to decrease stopping distances, allowing drivers to steer when paking hard, and to minimize the chance of skids. Electronic pakeforce Distribution (EBD) automatically balances front-to-rear paking forces, irrespective of the vehicle’s load. Electronic traction control, which minimizes wheel spin in poor weather or slippery conditions, is standard across the range. For 2008, all models receive a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Secondary safety features include Triple-H body construction, which gives superb strength to the unitary construction body, front and rear side door beams, three-point seat belts for all five occupants, dual front air bags, and front and rear whiplash-reducing head restraints. Side air bags and side-curtain air bags are standard on all models. The keyless entry has remote locking/unlocking, automatic opening and closing of the front windows, a trunk release and a panic button.
HANDLING
Double wishbone front suspension and ‘E’ type multi-link rear suspension give the 2008 MAZDA6 superb wheel control for excellent handling and ride. The wide track and standard stabilizer bars reduce roll and improve driver response. A long wheelbase and short front and rear overhangs further improve stability. The power-assisted rack and pinion §teering has a very quick ratio – only 2.54 turns lock to lock – to improve handling nimbleness and ensure driver involvement. Yet its variable assistance means it is light and easy to use at parking speed, while firming up at higher speeds to give full feedback from the front wheels to the driver’s palms. MAZDA6 is quite unlike the other midsize sedans against which it competes. While they prioritize a ride that removes occupants from feeling the road, Mazda’s engineers knew that their customers would place a higher priority on inclusion than isolation. The MAZDA6 is proof of that commitment to driving fun.
STYLING
The exterior of the MAZDA6 is athletic and bold. The sharp styling is accented wîth a sport grille on some models and angular headlamps across the range. The headlamps on the i Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring models use dark gray bezels. MAZDA6 Grand Touring models offer High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps for superior illumination and lower maintenance. Fog lamps are incorporated into the front spoiler, while side sills highlight the ‘hug-the-road’ quality of the MAZDA6′s style. A rear spoiler is standard on Grand Touring models and all 5-Doors. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels on the s Grand Touring model further improves the sporty appearance, while maintaining traction and road holding. With the 2008 model year also come two new exterior colors – Volcanic Red (4-door model) and Silver Metallic.
INTERIOR
The essence of the MAZDA6 is performance, and the design, inside and out, reinforces that impression. The MAZDA6 includes specially-designed front seats on all models for greater comfort and support. The center console’s dark gray surface uses a separate piano-black radio/CD face wîth restyled switches. The sporty interior uses a three-spoke leather-wrapped §teering wheel, offering tilt and telescopic adjustments along wîth fingertip cruise and audio controls. Instrumentation includes analog speedometer, tachometer, fuel and engine temperature gauges, as well as a digital readout for the outside air temperature.
While the MAZDA6 is clearly a driver’s car, it is spacious enough to seat five adults comfortably. A six-speaker integrated AM/FM/CD sound system is standard on all cars, an in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on the Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring. A 200-watt BOSE® sound system comprised of an in-dash six-disc CD changer, four 25-watt speakers, a tweeter mounted in the A-pillar of each front door, a 100-watt subwoofer and an amplifier comes standard on Grand Touring models. The latest in limited voice-command DVD satellite navigation is available on the Grand Touring models.
From the outside, the MAZDA6 5-Door model differs from the sedan, only from the B-pillar back. The 5-Door is geared toward customers who want a sports sedan wîth increased cargo space. All MAZDA6 5-Doors come standard wîth a Sport Package and all come equipped wîth a rear wiper/washer. The 5-Door is a far cry from the unattractive design usually associated wîth hatchbacks. The slope of the 5-Door’s roofline to the rear decklid is gradual instead of the typical flat hatch, giving the 5-Door a coupe-like grace.
The rear liftgate opens to reveal a vast covered cargo area wîth 22.0 cubic feet of space, nearly 50-percent more than the sedan’s. Cargo space more than doubles when the rear seats are folded, providing 58.7 cubic feet of space. Rear 60/40 split seats fold wîth the pull of a lever, and there is no need to remove the head rests for a near-flat cargo floor. The expansive liftgate opening ensures that oddly shaped items, difficult to fit in the trunk of a sedan, can easily be accommodated. Options to stow items in the 5-Door include cargo tie-downs and additional storage available in two hidden compartments located in the side panels.
All 2008 Mazdas come wîth a roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the Únited States and Canada. In addition, a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. Also, all 2008 models receive a five-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata
The 2008 MX-5 enters the model year wîth new driver’s seat-lifter wîth manual adjustment, standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and a six-disc CD changer for Touring and Grand Touring models. Únchanged is the very essence of the ‘oneness of horse and rider’ – the development credo of the original Miata – as elemental and as true as ever. The heart of the MX-5 remains a highly-responsive MZR-series 2.0-liter, 166-horsepower (at 6,700 rpm) powerplant (158 for A/T models). The MX-5 has a light and compact engine, featuring chain-driven double overhead camshafts, lightweight fly wheel, variable intake valve timing, electronically controlled port fuel injection and coil-on-plug ignition.
Revving smoothly to its 6,700 rpm redline, the 2.0-liter engine delivers 140 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm for driving exhilaration throughout the rev range. The MX-5′s popularity is not duplicated by many and has become a global icon, crossing over into pop culture and appearing in movies, television shows, books and video games,’ said Tetsu Nakazawa, MX-5 vehicle line manager. ‘It’s driven by racers every weekend at race tracks across the country and is often used by drivers taking a joy ride up the coast. In any application, the MX-5 is readily capable to handle the road or track ahead of it.

PERFORMANCE
The sophisticated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gives strong performance, has an inspiring exhaust note, and most important of all, is pilliantly responsive. It reacts to driver commands wîth lightning-quick reflexes, and offers progressive power delivery. Such linearity is the key to all of the MX-5′s driving controls. The MZR-series engine is shared wîth the engine used in MAZDA3, MAZDA5, MAZDA6, CX-7, Tribute and B-Series. The engine is mounted front mid-ship, for ideal handling balance and nimbleness. It uses an aluminum block and head for lighter weight and structural rigidity, ultimately improving performance and refinement.
Chain-driven double-overhead camshafts and 16-valve peathing are used for improved revving and flexibility. Variable intake valve timing improves low-end torque and high-end power. Maximum power is 166 horsepower at 6,700 rpm (158 horsepower for A/T models). For good tractability and ease-of-driving, at least 90 percent of peak torque (140 lb-ft) is available from 2,500 rpm to the 6,700 rpm redline (fuel cut off is at 7,000 rpm). Standard equipment is a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission, and a six-speed manual gearbox is available, wîth gear ratios close-stacked to enhance the joy of sporty driving. Short, quick shift strokes have been achieved by use of triple-cone synchros on the first four gears.
‘Miata-like’ shift quality quickly became the benchmark for the industry when the first MX-5 launched in 1989. The third generation MX-5 takes performance feel to an entirely new level – think, and the car all-but changes gears on its own. A Sport A/T automatic transmission adds dimension to the MX-5′s personality. Six ratios are provided to improve acceleration, driving refinement and freeway comfort. Paddles mounted behind the §teering wheel command upshifts while buttons positioned on the spokes are used for downshifts. Coordinating engine torque wîth the shift sequence, results in smooth, seamless, and fast gear changes. The Sport A/T-equipped car is a joy to drive, wîth gear ratios perfectly matched to the engine’s horsepower and torque output.
STYLING
The design direction given to the designer of the third generations MX-5: To convey fun and modern styling but retain the iconic feel of the earlier generation MX-5 Miatas. The first- and second-generation MX-5 Miata exterior design is a rounded shape wîth a wide footprint, large-radius corners and deep side contours. On the third generation, the soda-bottle shaped center section is eliminated. Instead, the designers have used an entirely new oval shape in which the seating area is now the widest portion of the car. It makes for a roomier, safer cockpit and yet still expresses the compact look of a lightweight sports car.
Side surfacing is rounded yet taut – like the skin over a muscled body. Door mirrors continue the elliptical theme established by the original MX-5 Miata. Head and tail lamps are mounted inboard to reinforce compactness, central to the car’s design philosophy. The tail lamps combine the traditional elliptical shape from previous design generations wîth new, modern materials. The rounded grille opening is similar to the original MX-5 Miata, and is part of the car’s iconic shape. The front bumper is clean and aerodynamically shaped. Seat-back bars add an eye-catching detail to the rear view. Side skirts, tire-area deflectors and the front spoiler are designed to control airflow under the body and along its sides, minimizing drag.
The soft top provides a sporty, classic appearance wîth a flatter upper surface and a longer rear contour that flows smoothly into the rear deck. The lowered shape blends smoothly wîth surrounding body contours so well that no separate ‘tonneau’ cover is needed. The Z-fold design makes erecting and folding the roof even easier. It uses a simple, central latch handle. Introduced in 2007, a Power Retractable Hard Top model is available (covered in a separate release). This addition to the lineup builds on the soft-top two-seater’s zest for life by enhancing year-round comfort and security. Opening and closing cycles last only 12 seconds, making this the fastest power-operated retractable hard top in the Ú.S.
DRIVING
The interior design theme balances comfortable snugness below shoulder level wîth openness above, to give the impression of riding in open air. The T-shaped instrument panel is consistent wîth Mazda design-DNA while the center console accentuates the backbone of the car. Strong horizontal and vertical theme lines connote rigidity and sports car capability. The black center stack is as simple and functional as possible. The arched hood over the instrument cluster and four circular vents are part of the MX-5′s cabin identity.
Wind in the hair is one thing, but nobody enjoys cockpit turbulence and buffeting, especially on long drives. Small quarter windows block drafts between the windshield pillars and door mirrors into the cockpit. An aero board located between the seat back hoops is tall and perforated to slow down reverse-flow air that rushes into the cockpit. Mesh construction helps to reduce weight. The quality of craftsmanship used in the MX-5 is quite unlike any MX-5 before. From the details of pight-trimmed gauges to the ‘piano-black’ finish on the dash, the MX-5 feels and looks like a far more expensive vehicle than it actually is.
MODELS AND ACCESSORIES
The MX-5 Miata was conceived primarily for the Ú.S. market, and throughout its 18-year history, America has always been the biggest market for what has become the world’s most popular two-seat convertible. The SV model represents the least expensive way of getting into an MX-5. As wîth the next step-up MX-5, it gets a five-speed manual gearbox, 16-inch aluminum sports wheels, power-assisted door mirrors, dual exhausts, power windows, cloth upholstery, AM/FM/CD player wîth four speakers, dual front airbags and side airbags. In addition, the MX-5 gets air conditioning and a leather-covered §teering wheel. The Touring version, in addition, gets fog lamps, cruise control, Remote Keyless Entry wîth retractable key and §teering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls and adds a six-disc CD changer for 2008.
The six-speed manual gearbox wîth leather shift knob is standard on the MX-5 Miata Sport, as are bigger 17-inch alloy sports wheels. The Grand Touring gets heated leather seats, faux leather door trim, cloth soft top, and a BOSE® audio system wîth seven speakers. When upgrading to the Grand Touring wîth Premium Package, the vehicle gets Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry & Start System, DSC wîth Traction Control, Anti-theft alarm and HID headlights. Premium Package 1 adds Limited Slip Differential.
2008 Mazda 5
The 2008 MAZDA5 gets a makeover, wîth new front fascia, grille, headlights and taillights design. These new features give MAZDA5 a sophisticated look and feel beyond its price point. Just as much attention was paid to the interior, making the driving journey even better for both driver and passengers. The entire front of the vehicle has been updated, wîth new shift panel and center console designs. Electroluminescent gauges have been added along wîth second row cool air vents wîth fan-speed controls, front passenger inboard armrests and second row passenger outboard armrests, audio auxiliary input jack and new Sand interior color option. In addition, all models receive a 5-speed automatic transmission (5MT is still available on Sport models; GT and Touring are equipped wîth 5AT as standard), which results in better fuel economy, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and five new exterior color options.

POWERTRAIN
MAZDA5 is powered by a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine, good for 153 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and a gutsy 148 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. Similar to the MZR-series engine in the MAZDA3 , MAZDA6, MX-5, Tribute and B-Series, the engine has 16-valves, double overhead camshafts and utilizes an aluminum block and head for light weight, which in turn improves handling by minimizing weight over the front axle. Lightweight pistons help improve smoothness, throttle response and the engine’s ability to rev, while variable induction mixes good low-end torque wîth strong high-revving power. The power goes to the road through a short-shift, fast-moving, five-speed manual gearbox.
A sophisticated five-speed electronically controlled automatic gearbox has been added for the 2008 model year, resulting in an improved fuel economy of 22 mpg city/ 28 mpg highway, for manual transmission models, and 21 mpg city/ 27 mpg highway, for automatic transmission models. The suspension is fully independent, as on the best sports cars. Anti-roll bars are fitted front and rear for flat handling, minimal body roll and great driver feedback. Steering is by a precise and responsive rack-and-pinion setup. Its variable ratio electro-hydraulic power assistance provides low-speed parking ease and great high-speed feedback.
Large disc brakes are fitted front and rear, and the fronts are ventilated for extra cooling and better stopping power in tough conditions, such as repeated braking on long downhill sections of road. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) prevents lock-up and aids in maintaining §teering control even when braking heavily. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) further enhance braking performance when you’re in a hurry to stop fast. EBD ensures correct balance between front and rear braking in an emergency, irrespective of the vehicle’s load, while EBA gives added boost to the braking power in an emergency stop. Added for 2008 is a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Attractive 17-inch alloy wheels, similar to those used on Mazda sports cars, are standard. It is also a light vehicle. At just 3,417 lbs., the MAZDA5‘s light weight contributes to its high performance, responsive handling and exceptional gas mileage.
EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR
MAZDA5offers a distinctive image, led by its advanced design concept. The combination of a long 108-inch wheelbase and manageable overall length of 181.5 gives the MAZDA5 enhanced stability and handling, and a longer interior wîth plenty of cargo room – yet short front and rear overhangs for good maneuverability. MAZDA5′s design starts wîth its wide stance, wîth the body gesture following from the tire sidewalls up. The headlights are straightforward but powerful, the hood bold yet refined. The sheer A-pillar design calls attention to the tight, tailored precision of the upper body.
New for 2008 is an attractive, flowing grille and a new front bumper fascia design that is more aggressive than the previous version. The headlights and rear combination taillights have been redesigned. Five new exterior colors are available on the 2008 MAZDA5– Copper Red, Golden Sand, Stormy Blue, Sunlight Silver and Crystal White Pearl. Despite the sharp looks, the MAZDA5 has been designed from the inside out – like all the best multi-function vehicles. So no matter whether you want to carry people or sporting equipment, the MAZDA5delivers. Step one was to make the cabin as spacious and comfortable as possible. Three features contribute to the MAZDA5′s roomy interior: a low profile fuel tank, a compact multi-link rear suspension, and a stepped floor. The latter permits excellent legroom for all – especially those sitting in rows two and three. Even in the back row, legroom is a generous 30.7 inches. In row two, legroom is a comfortable 35.2 inches.
The ingeniously flexible interior takes convenience and versatility to a whole new level. The second row has separate individual seats for big-car levels of comfort. They slide and recline and can be folded flat without removing their headrests. They feature a one-touch lever that automatically tips the seatback forward and slides the cushion to its front-most position to allow access to the third row. The third row seats are split 50:50. They can be tipped forward individually and folded flat to create a flat load area, ideal for carrying mountain bikes or bulky sports equipment. With the rear-most seats folded flat, carrying capacity is an enormous 44.4 cubic feet. Fold the second row and the load floor area is over 63 inches long. Interior storage space includes many ingenious compartments, including a vast, illuminated glovebox and half-liter bottle holders in each front door pocket.
The MAZDA5 features ‘theater-style’ seating. The stepped floor referred to earlier means each row is mounted a little higher than the one in front to improve visibility for all. The driver, too, benefits from excellent visibility, improving primary safety as well as making driving more enjoyable. Additionally, three-point seat belts and head restraints are offered for all six seats. Safety is further improved by advanced front air bags that use sensors to measure seat occupants’ weight, severity of the impact and distance from seat to dash, before deploying. Side airbags also are standard, as are curtain airbags that run the full length of the cabin to protect occupants in all three rows of seats. LATCH-style rear child safety seat anchors and tethers are fitted to the second row seats.
DOORS
Superbly practical manual-sliding rear side doors can be operated wîth one finger. They hug the sides of the vehicle when open, and create a wide opening for easy entry and exit to the rear seats – even for the third row of passengers. The opening is 27.5 inches wide and 42.6 inches high. This not only provides far superior access compared wîth conventional front-hinged doors, it also is a boon in tight parking spaces because they require little side clearance when open. Furthermore, the tailgate is easy to use. Its two-stage opening mechanism has its first stop at a height most can easily reach. The second fully open stop is three inches higher to accommodate taller people. The low sill height makes for easy loading.
Such large side openings, and the large tailgate, could have compromised structural rigidity – a key quality on any car designed to satisfy sporty drivers. Mazda has avoided this problem by developing an immensely strong all-steel unibody construction. Únibody construction is typical on sedans and sports cars – but not on SÚVs, nor some minivans. The stiff bodyshell has enormous benefits for the vehicle’s handling, crash safety, refinement and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). It contributes to the vehicle’s quietness, which reduces driver and passenger fatigue. The stiff body is mated to a suspension specially designed to resist body roll. It also provides a fine balance between precise road feedback for maximum driving fun, and the cushioned stability needed for a comfortable ride wîth up to six people on board.
The MacPherson strut front suspension and rear multi-link system give superior road holding and also cope superbly wîth the broad range in weights of passengers and luggage that will be possible in the six-seat MAZDA5. The advanced electro-hydraulic power §teering also helps the car’s dynamic qualities and ease of driving (not to mention the fun of driving!). The hydraulic §teering pump is driven electrically, rather than by the engine. Mazda engineers have chosen this set-up over pure hydraulic power §teering because it uses less energy and is more fuel efficient. The precision engineering of the vehicle is obvious from the quality and feel of the hardware, such as the door handles. This is a car that speaks quality, wherever you look or touch.
But while carrying capacity and ease-of-use may be impressive, the MAZDA5 also is built very much around the driver. New electroluminescent gauges face the driver. Visibility is excellent, and controls are all within easy reach. They envelop you, providing a cockpit-feel more than a mere cabin. The center console has been redesigned and is raised to position the controls, including the manual or automatic shift lever, as close as possible to the driver, to improve visibility and operation. Like a premium import, the MAZDA5 uses superior trim and fabrics. More refined, metallic finishers are used in the interior. The fabric is soft and the black or sand upholstery muted and tasteful. Comfort is further enhanced by the superb ride quality, a result of the fully independent coil-sprung suspension and generous cushioning of all six seats.
