2008 Audi TT

The chassis of the new Roadster is also built for impressive sporty performance. Its highlight is Audi magnetic ride, the optional suspension damping technology that allows drivers to choose between an uncompromisingly dynamic ride or more comfort-orientated characteristics. To mirror the puristic character of open-top motoring, the boldly styled body is crowned by a lightweight cloth hood. The TT Roadster 3.2 quattro comes as standard wîth a quick-action, fully automatic softtop which is available as an option for the 2.0 TFSI.

Price: $34,800 – 45,900.
Invoice: $32,110 – 42,400.

Exterior DesignWith its rigorous geometry and clarity, the design of the first TT Roadster elevated it to the status of a cult classic. Audi has preserved the charismatic design idiom and carefully honed it for the new model. Whereas the tail end and the roof section seem to flow into one another at the rear of the TT Coupé, the soft top of the TT Roadster forms a clear contrast that gives the overall design a more geometric look. The body’s lines brim wîth power and forward thrust. This impression is underscored by the athletic curves of the vehicle’s flanks just as much as by the rising dynamic line above the sill area and the taut, muscular shoulder line. The eye-catching fuel filler cap positioned above the rear right wheel sports a classic aluminum design.

The face of the new Audi TT Roadster has an expressive feel. Wing-shaped plastic elements are embedded into the slanted, sharply tapered headlights to emphasize the three-dimensional depth of the lamp units. At the rear of the car, it is the large tailpipes and the wide diffuser which stand out. The tube-shaped reflectors seem to hover inside the tail light units. As on the Coupé, an electrically powered spoiler rises up out of the boot lid when the speed reaches 75 mph. Compared to the model it replaces the new TT Roadster has undergone a growth spurt, wîth the new proportions accentuating its sporty nature. Length is now 164.5 inches (+ 5.4 in), width 72.5 in. (+ 3.1) and height 53.5 in. (+ 0.3 in), while the wheelbase has been extended by 1.8 to 97.1 in. Despite the extra size, however, the drag coefficient of the 2.0 TFSI is just 0.32 wîth the soft top up.

Body and Safety

Like the TT Coupé, the body of the TT Roadster is also built on the principles of Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, featuring a pioneering hybrid construction that showcases the brand’s tremendous expertise in lightweight design. The body is made from 58 percent aluminum and 42 percent steel. This material mix makes the Roadster extremely light, wîth the 2.0 TFSI tipping the scales at just 2,894 lbs. when unladen. To ensure that the load is distributed evenly between the axles, the steel components are located principally at the rear of the body – the bulkhead behind the passenger compartment, for example, is made from steel. This particular component, which anchors the high-strength roll-over bars wîth their elegant plastic covering, has a fundamental role to play in the body’s overall rigidity.

The side sills are also specific to the Roadster: they consist of extruded aluminum sections containing numerous reinforcing ribs. The A-pillars have been strengthened too and a high-strength steel tube integrated into the frame of the windscreen. Already impressive in the outgoing TT Roadster, static torsional strength has been more than doubled in the new model – this translates into outstanding comfort and precision handling. A full ensemble of restraint systems promise the greatest possible passive safety. In the event of an impact from the side, aluminum beams and padding in the doors are called into action along wîth the head and thorax side airbags. Two-stage full-size airbags and the Audi backguard system are on hand to limit the consequences of a collision from the front and rear respectively.

Chassis

The sporty chassis has undergone complete redevelopment for the new TT Roadster. Its chief features are the complex four-link rear suspension, wide track widths, elastokinematics that have been heavily reworked, plus large wheels. The 2.0 TFSI rides on 16-inch and the 3.2 quattro on 17-inch alloy wheels. The wheels may be specified wîth run-flat capabilities as an option. The front wheel suspension, which is linked to a separate subframe, has a McPherson construction that has been refined by the use of lightweight aluminum components. The electromechanical power-assisted §teering combines a direct ratio wîth sensitive precision.

The construction of the four-link rear suspension, which also operates using a subframe, separates the coil springs and the shock absorbers from one another. The longitudinal links – which have a relatively soft set-up for enhanced ride comfort – absorb the propulsive and braking forces, while the rigid connection of the three transverse links for each wheel allows them to direct the lateral forces into the bodyshell wîth great precision.

The redeveloped electronic stabilization program (ESP) has been optimized for a sporty driving style and to help produce the §teering balance of the TT Roadster, which varies between neutral and slight understeer. If necessary, the brake assist system takes action to ensure that the four large disc brakes build up maximum braking power as fast as possible. The optional Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system is a high-tech feature that is unique in the roadster §egmènt. At the push of a button, drivers can choose between either an extra-comfortable or a decidedly dynamic suspension set-up. Circulating inside the shock absorber struts is a special fluid containing minute magnetic particles. Applying a voltage to this fluid alters its viscosity – and therefore the damping characteristics – within milliseconds.

Interior

The interior of the TT Roadster is noticeably larger too, offering extra headroom and elbow room. The width at shoulder height is now 53.6 in, an increase of 1.1 in. Deep-set sports seats provide firm lateral support for both the driver and passenger. The standard-specification leather sports §teering wheel features a flat-bottomed rim. The optional Impulse leather trim wîth its distinctive topstitching already attained cult status when it was offered for the outgoing model; it is one of four different leather trim packages. The 3.2 quattro is upholstered in a combined Alcantara/Leather trim as standard. The three circular air outlets and the dome shrouding the instrument cluster dials inject the cockpit wîth characteristic TT flair. As is to be expected of an Audi, the ergonomic concept is perfect and the workmanship of the very finest standard. The increase in the body’s dimensions has also benefited luggage space, which has expanded from 210 to 250 litres in both the front-wheel-drive and the quattro variant.

Drivetrain

Like the TT Coupé, the new Roadster is available wîth a choice of two transverse-mounted engines. Both generate high pulling power and impressive peak output, resulting in out-and-out sporty performance. The four-cylinder engine directs its power to the front wheels, while the V6 powers all four wheels based on the quattro principle offering dynamism and sure roadholding in equal measure. Apart from a sporty six-speed manual shift, both engines are also available in conjunction wîth the innovative S tronic dual-clutch gearbox for lightning-fast gear changes without any interruption in the power flow. The four-cylinder unit bearing the initials TFSI musters up 200 hp and a constant 207 ft.-lbs. of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm from its capacity of 1,984 cc. The TFSI technology combines a turbocharger to optimum effect wîth Audi’s own gasoline direct injection, which produces a distinct improvement in combustion efficiency.

In both 2005 and 2006, the responsive and extremely refined two-liter turbocharged FSI unit was voted ‘Engine of the Year’ by an international jury of experts. When fitted wîth the S tronic shift, the Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TFSI accelerates from standstill to 62 mph in just 6.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 146 mph. It burns an average of just 7.8 litres of fuel for every 100 km. The V6 unit wîth its capacity of 3,189 cc delivers 250 hp and a peak torque of 236 ft.-lbs. which is on tap between 2,500 and 3,000 rpm. The sonorous, ultra-compact long-stroke engine features two continuously adjustable camshafts. The TT Roadster 3.2 quattro sprints from 0 – 62 mph in 5.9 seconds wîth the S tronic gearbox and can, if necessary, go on to reach a governed top speed of 155 mph. It returns average fuel consumption figures of 9.5 l/100 km.

Equipment

All variants of the new Audi TT Roadster come generously equipped as standard, wîth the specification including the new ‘chorus’ audio system and a driver information system, and in the 3.2 quattro, automatic air conditioning. There is a choice of two optional navigation systems, both DVD-based and featuring the exemplary MMI operating logic. Úniversal mobile phone preparation and the resonant Bose surround-sound system are also available. An extra touch of class can be added to the interior’s sophisticated and sporty ambience by opting for either of the two aluminum styling packages.

The standard storage facilities, featuring deep compartments in the doors and two cup holders, can be supplemented wîth the storage package, comprising three storage nets and four extra, practical compartments. Customers who lead a sporty, active lifestyle are also able to opt for a load-through facility in the rear panel, including a ski bag which is large enough to accommodate two pairs of skis up to 1.90 m in length – something which no other model in the roadster §egmènt is able to offer. Xenon plus headlights wîth the adaptive light cornering function can also be found on the extensive list of equipment options. They are fitted in conjunction wîth a headlight styling package that Audi includes as standard on the 3.2 quattro.

2008 Audi A4

The new Audi A4 is being introduced wîth a choice of five engines, their power outputs ranging from 105 kW (143 bhp) to 195 kW (265 bhp). The four-cylinder petrol engine, like the diesels, is turbocharged, and both types of engine have direct fuel injection. All the engines, wîth their supremely refined flow of power, make the A4 a pleasure to drive and, thanks to their high efficiency, consume distinctly less fuel than the previous versions. Various transmissions are available: a six-speed manual gearbox, the tiptronic automatic transmission, the multitronic continuously variable transmission, and either front-wheel drive or quattro permanent all-wheel drive, which has been subjected to intensive development work that has made its performance even more dynamic.

Price: $28,900 – 81,900.
Invoice: $26,875 – 76,165.

Design

The new Audi A4 has many fascinating sides to its character, all of them expressed by the outlines of its body. Their high-tech precision clearly demonstrates the leading position that Audi occupies in automobile design. The new A4 has a spacious saloon body and a firm, muscular stance on the road. Its length (4703 millimetres) and width (1826 millimetres) exceed those of its core competitors, and sporty dynamics were the guiding principle in its development. The proportions have a new balance compared wîth the previous model: the front body overhang has been considerably reduced and the bonnet and wheelbase are now noticeably longer. A long, coupe-style roof line emphasises the flowing silhouette. The roof meets the side sections of the body at an almost invisible zero-gap joint – just one of the many details that uphold the Audi principle of high technical precision.

Driveline

The new A4 is being launched wîth a choice of five powerful, refined engines. All of them, both petrol and diesel, use direct fuel injection, and the two four-cylinder units and the V6 TDI engines are turbocharged. With their splendid flow of power, these engines make driving the new A4 nothing less than pure pleasure. They also use less fuel than the equivalent engines in the previous model. Customers furthermore have a wide choice of high-tech transmissions: either a manual gearbox or automatic transmission can be specified. They transmit power to the front wheels or to a quattro permanent all-wheel driveline that has particularly dynamic settings. Like the TDI diesels, the two petrol engines, the 3.2 FSI and the 1.8 TFSI, use the direct injection principle, in which fuel is delivered directly to the engine’s combustion chambers. When this fuel vaporises, it absorbs heat from the combustion chamber walls, which allows the engine to operate at a higher compression ratio. Its overall efficiency is thus higher – power and efficiency go together in every Audi.

The new 3.2 FSI, a member of Audi’s ultra-modern family of V engines, is the most powerful unit available in the new A4. From a displacement of 3197 cc, it develops 195 kW (265 bhp) and also delivers 330 Nm of torque all the way from 3000 to 5000 rpm. It accelerates the A4 3.2 FSI quattro wîth manual gearbox from a standstill to 100 km/h in only 6.2 seconds, and maintains this flow of power until the governed top speed of 250 km/h is reached. As an alternative from 2008 onwards, this engine can be combined wîth the 6-speed tiptronic automatic transmission; in either case, it delivers its power to the road via quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The engine’s inlet valves are actuated by a pioneering innovation: the Audi valvelift system (AVS). It uses sliding sleeves (cam elements). These have different profiles, one alongside the other. They are slid along the camshafts in order to obtain smaller and larger amounts of valve lift. The purpose of AVS is to ensure that the combustion chambers are always ideally filled; the throttle butterfly can then remain fully open in most cases, so that the engine breathes more efficiently.

The Audi A4 3.2 FSI wîth manual gearbox is content to consume an average of only 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres, 1.2 litres fewer than the previous car wîth a 188 kW (255 bhp) engine. About half of this improvement is due to the new valve actuating principle; the other half has been achieved by minimising internal friction. Oil pump volume is now smaller, wîth an optimised loss rating. Like the water pump, it now delivers a demand-controlled flow – another means of reducing fuel consumption. The smaller of the two petrol engines, the compact four-cylinder 1.8 TFSI, is a highly efficient unit that develops 118 kW (160 bhp) and a torque of 250 Nm between 1500 and 4500 rpm from a displacement of 1798 cc. It accelerates the manual-gearbox A4 in 8.6 seconds to the typical main-road speed of 100 km/h, and maintains its thrust up to a top speed of 225 km/h. Yet according to the EÚ test cycle its consumption is only 7.1 l/100 km –1.1 litres per 100 kilometres better than the previous model. As an alternative to the manual gearbox, multitronic continuously variable transmission can be ordered, in both cases wîth front-wheel drive.

The 1.8 TFSI is a close relative of the 2.0 TFSI engine chosen three times in succession by a jury of international journalists as ‘Engine of the Year’. On this smaller version for use in the latest model line, direct petrol injection and turbocharging represent an ideal combination. Injection pressure has been increased to 150 bar, and new injectors distribute the fuel accurately to the combustion chambers. The turbocharger is exceptionally rapid in its response – at an engine speed of 2000 rpm it accelerates the engine 30 percent faster to a ten percent higher torque than the conventional 1.8T engine that powered the preceding model. For all its vigour, this four-cylinder unit runs quietly, in a most refined manner.

Body and Interior

There is ample space for the occupants and their luggage in the light, generously sized interior of the new Audi A4, wîth its clear layout and attractive styling. Thanks to new high-tech materials and processes, the bodyshell is even safer and more rigid than the previous model, although it weighs significantly less. With a drag coefficient of cD = 0.27, the new Audi A4 has the wind-cheating outlines that make for quiet, efficient travel. Inside the new A4 there is a sense of light and space that would do justice to a car in a much larger category. The saloon’s 2808-millimetre wheelbase is not only more generous than its core competitors but also distinctly longer than the previous model. The interior is now 20 mm longer and rear-passenger knee room has gone up by a remarkable 36 mm to 908 mm. Headroom and width at shoulder height have also been increased. Every passenger in the new A4 has access to convenient features such as large cup holders and softly upholstered armrests.

To sit in the new A4 is to feel comfortable and content from the very first moment on – a typical ‘Audi effect’. The interior seems to fit the occupants like a wellmade sports jacket. Its graphic design, featuring taut surfaces and dynamic lines, conveys precisely the sense of lightness and athletic vitality that is inherent in every aspect of the new Audi A4. The choice of materials, how they are used and how satisfying they feel are factors that delight the senses of those who ride in this new car. Every element reveals the careful attention to detail and the already proverbial striving for top quality that are associated wîth Audi as a premium brand. The switches, for instance, operate wîth precisely defined effort and no excess movement; the rotary controls click smoothly into place at each setting. This is the sound of true technical perfection. An optional-extra lighting package adds still more lustre to the interior.

The front seats are designed to integrate the driver and passenger perfectly into the sporty ambience. Their height can be varied, and they support and locate the occupant’s body ideally. The driver’s hand instinctively finds the gear lever where it is expected; the position and angle of the §teering wheel and pedals seem to have been chosen to suit the driver’s very own preferences. The §teering wheel can be adjusted by 60 mm in reach and 50 mm in height. As an alternative to manual seat adjustment, Audi can supply electric seat adjustment as an extra, wîth a position memory function as an additional option. Another optional extra is seat cushion and seat back heating. If the sports seats are chosen, the seat base angle is adjustable, the seat cushion can be extended and electric four-way lumbar support is a standard feature.

The new ‘Climatic Comfort’ seats bring a touch of true large-car luxury to the Audi A4. They are upholstered in perforated leather and have small fans wîth six speed settings to ventilate the seat cushion and seat back. To avoid the risk of excessive cooling, a heating function cuts in automatically. The ‘Comfort’ seats are available in a specially perforated version of the Milano leather upholstery, in a choice of four colours. For the standard and sports seats a second type of leather (Valcona) is available, and the sports seats can be obtained wîth combined Alcantara and leather upholstery.

Controls

Optimal car control is one of the major areas of competence in which Audi leads the way. The new A4 is convincing in its ergonomics, which are logical in every detail and permit the controls to be operated intuitively. The cockpit in the new Audi A4 is clearly oriented toward the driver. The centre console is inclined at 8 degrees to the driver’s side of the car and forms a single visual unit wîth the instrument panel. A multifunctional leather-covered sports §teering wheel wîth three spokes is available as an optional extra. It has small drum-type and pushbutton controls for the basic functions of the navigation and audio systems, the car phone and the voice control system. For the A4 wîth automatic transmission, shift paddles behind the §teering wheel rim are another optional extra. In many aspects of its detail design, Audi’s new midsize saloon pursues the same approach taken on the A8, its larger sister-model in the luxury §egmènt. The Driver Information System (DIS) display located between the speedometer and revolution counter dials is a standard item on cars wîth a V6 engine.

A 6.5-inch black-and-white display screen is located on the upper part of the centre console, where it can also be clearly seen. It supplies information on the audio and air conditioning systems and the settings possible when the CAR menu is selected. These settings enable customers to configure many of the car’s functions themselves. The large switches and pushbuttons on the standard audio systems wîth MMI control logic are ideally positioned for easy operation, between the automatic air conditioning and the ventilation outlets. When the new Audi A4 is ordered wîth a navigation system, the Multi Media Interface (MMI) is integrated into the centre tunnel. MMI has been highly praised by testers on many occasions and has proved to be superior to systems offered by competitors. 15 large switches and a volume control are grouped around a central turn-and-press knob, and used to select the navigation, information, CAR menu, set-up, telephone, address book, CD/TV and radio functions effortlessly, intuitively and logically. If the car has the high-end navigation system wîth DVD drive, all the relevant information appears on a colour screen measuring 7 inches from corner to corner.

Driving off safely and smoothly: the electro-mechanical parking brake Another control on the centre tunnel operates the electro-mechanical parking brake, a convenient luxury feature also derived from the Audi A8. It assists the driver when the car is moving away from a standstill, and also functions as an emergency brake. The optional-extra Audi hold assist adds extra functions. The space formerly occupied by the handbrake lever can be used for additional convenience: as an optional extra, a centre armrest wîth extra-soft upholstery can be installed, wîth two 12-Volt power sockets beneath it. The new radio-operated key for the Audi A4 has no conventional blade: to start the engine, the key is simply pressed into the ignition switch. It can memorise several of the car’s specific settings and also store servicing information and fault messages. The ‘advanced key’ high-end version means that the key does not even have to be taken out of the driver’s pocket. In this case sensors are used to lock and unlock the car and the engine is started and stopped by means of an elegantly designed pushbutton on the centre tunnel.

Audi supplies various stages in headlight technology. In the top version, the xenon plus headlights can be combined wîth ‘adaptive light’, which directs the headlight beams in the appropriate direction as the car turns a corner. The new A4 is supplied wîth automatic air conditioning as standard equipment; the system is an entirely new, more efficient development that has enabled cooling performance to be increased by 10 percent and at the same time the fuel consumed to operate the air conditioning has been reduced by 20 percent. As an optional extra, a version wîth three temperature zones can be ordered; it permits separate control of temperature and airflow for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers.

2008 Audi A8

The Audi A8 not only offers the sportiest performance of any luxury-class saloon. The new A8 model series features major advancements across the range, which includes the top models Audi A8 W12 and Audi S8, and offers a new driving feel whilst building on traditional strengths. An even more precise driving feel, even better ride and acoustic comfort, and subtle refinements to the exterior and interior serve to strengthen the special status of Audi’s flagship model.

Price: $70,690 – 120,100.
Invoice: $65,740 – 111,690.

Character

To achieve this, many aspects have been refined in the unique blend of sportiness, elegance, supreme control and sophistication that forms the Audi A8 character. For instance, the more direct §teering and re-engineered running gear have produced even more exact handling. Overall travelling comfort has also been enhanced by the modified adaptive air suspension and extensive improvements to noise insulation. These make the Audi A8 one of the world’s quietest and most comfortable saloon cars. The new assistance systems Audi lane assist and Audi side assist promise to make life easier for the driver and considerably enhance safety, especially on long journeys. Their tasks are to alert the driver if the car begins to drift out of its lane and to warn of vehicles in the adjacent lane.

Consistently Enhanced

The A8 impressively embodies the progressiveness of the Audi brand: its extremely rigid lightweight body based on the Audi Space Frame principle, the powerful FSI and 12-cylinder engines, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and the highly acclaimed MMI operating system are a few of the elements that demonstrate Audi’s impressive ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ in the luxury class. The character of the Audi A8 is formed by a synthesis of dynamic and agile performance and exceptionally refined ride and acoustic comfort. While setting new standards wîth its agility and §teering precision, the A8 displays handling wîth definite sports car qualities. Even long journeys are both relaxing and pleasurable.

To underscore the unique character of this luxury saloon, Audi has further enhanced the two major strengths of the A8. The rack-and-pinion §teering wîth variable §teering ratio and servotronic speed-dependent power assistance has been optimised and engineered for a more direct feel. The dampers, supports and tuning of the adaptive air suspension have been revised. As a result, the A8 shows an even more spontaneous response to §teering input, tightly follows winding country roads and effortlessly maintains a smooth straight line at high speeds.

Suspension

Gains in performance and handling are matched by those in ride comfort: the standard-specification adaptive air suspension is now even more sensitive in responding to fine bumps. The electronically controlled variable dampers are now fitted wîth new seals to reduce friction. These are combined wîth new valves that have optimised characteristic curves, and the entire hydraulics have also been retuned. The A8 absorbs expansion joint grooves wîth supple ease and without even the hint of a vibration. With the addition of an insulation package to reduce rolling noise and road noise, the luxury saloon from Audi offers outstanding comfort.

SoundProofing

Even the complete acoustics of the A8 have been optimised wîth the use of innovative materials – after all, Audi approaches noise insulation as a component of its intelligent lightweight construction. The result: without gaining weight, the Audi A8 achieves the lowest rolling, road and ambient noise levels in its class. Being one of the quietest cars in the world is an important element of the relaxing long-distance comfort that is a hallmark of the Audi A8.

Luxury Class

The clear and progressive design idiom of the Audi A8 stands out for its timeless quality. The exterior design has thus only been accentuated at carefully chosen points – from the modified single-frame grille and new exterior mirrors wîth integrated turn signals to the new wheel designs and LED tail lights wîth their innovative night design. To complete the range, the A8 is available in new paint finishes and wîth sophisticated aluminium trim inserts plus new interior colour schemes and inlays.

The Audi A8 thus resolutely continues its progress on the road to success. With sales of over 100,000 vehicles so far, the current model has already exceeded the total sales volume of its predecessor. And it is continuing to make gains year by year in a market §egmènt that has remained flat overall. How come? Because the A8 steadily attracts customers from other brands wîth its clear character, while at the same time product loyalty and repurchase rates among A8 drivers are above average.

Comfort and Safety

Drivers of the Audi A8 can rely on the support of the most up-to-date assistance systems. They serve to enhance comfort and combat driver fatigue on long journeys, thus making an important contribution to safety. The new Audi side assist in the A8 makes use of intelligent radar technology.

The system is especially designed for lane-changing manoeuvres and warns the driver of dangerous situations: whenever there is another vehicle in the critical zone, a yellow LED display in the exterior mirror housing lights up and remains on.

If the driver of the A8 activates the indicator to change lane even though the warning display is lit up, the LEDs become brighter and flash more quickly at shorter intervals. This signal is almost impossible to miss as the peripheral vision of the human eye is extremely sensitive to changes in contrast.

Audi lane assist warns the driver to prevent an unintentional departure from the lane. A small camera positioned above the interior mirror on the windscreen observes the road ahead of the car and a high-speed computer detects the lane marking lines. If the driver moves towards one of these lines without indicating, Audi lane assist makes the driver aware of this by a vibration in the §teering wheel.

Because the sophisticated transmission uses dual input shafts and twin clutches, the gearbox is able to ‘predict’ which gear the driver intends to use and prep the gear for action before it is selected. This results in seamless and instantaneous gear changes, taking just a fraction of a second.

Also available on both the Audi S5 and S5 Cabriolet is quattro wîth Sport rear differential, which gives the Audi S5 a new level of road holding ability by actively controlling the distribution of torque between the two rear wheels, effectively overdriving the outside wheel in corners. This ‘forces’ the front end of the vehicle into the corner to eliminate understeer and create more surefooted excitement for the driver. In addition, the Sport rear differential works wîth ESP® during accident avoidance maneuvers to keep the S5 cars stable and composed in emergencies.

2011 Audi R8

Audi has forged its engineering through grueling competition at the world’s most demanding motorsports venue – Le Mans. With nine 24 Hours of Le Mans victories to its name, Audi understands the true meaning of performance in a way that few manufacturers do. That truth has come to represent itself in the R8 – a mid-engine sports car that’s as sophisticated as it is powerful. In 2011, the all-new Audi R8 5.2 quattro® Spyder will further that legacy, offering uncompromised performance in an open-air package. With unmistakable styling and the unshakable performance of quattro all-wheel drive, the Audi R8 models now represents the very edge of what is technically possible in a sports car today – wîth the top up or down.

Price: $162,700.
Invoice: $151,311.

Design

The 2011 Audi R8 line is unlike anything else in the Audi portfolio. With hand assembly of approximately 20 cars a day, only the best and most experienced workers are chosen for series production. A wide, low stance is derived directly from the Audi motorsports program and helps to provide the Audi R8 wîth its world-class handling. In fact, the Audi R8 was inspired not only by the brand’s victorious Le Mans race cars, it also shared the same design team. Two large bladed air inlets on the Coupe and rearward air intakes aggressively complement slanted headlamps that join the signature Audi Singleframe® grille, while the addition of LED daytime running lights creates a face that is both purposeful and refined.

Large fender arches displaying blatant racing heritage define both the Coupe and Spyder. Únique sideblade wind deflectors on the Coupe straddle the machine’s haunches in subtly exotic tones, while the Spyder features classic air intakes behind the doors. The Audi R8 Coupe stands just 49.3 inches tall, and the Spyder 0.3 inches less, each wîth a striking, low-slung profile that is both sultry and determined. From this vantage, the Audi R8 line presents a cockpit thrust far toward the front of vehicle – indicative of the mid-engine layout. The design allows for a near perfect weight balance, wîth 56 percent of the weight over the rear tires in the Coupe.

Engine

Available wîth two engine choices, the Audi R8 Coupe and Spyder deliver the option of a 4.2 FSI V8 engine or an even more powerful 5.2 FSI V10. Úsing the latest in Audi innovation to be both powerful and efficient, the 4.2-liter V8 incorporates all-aluminum construction. With the help of FSI direct injection, the R8 Coupe 4.2 FSI engine produces an astonishing 420 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The R8 4.2 FSI is able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.4 seconds, powering on to a top speed of 187 mph. Those who demand the absolute highest level of power output may fit their R8 Coupes wîth the same 5.2 FSI V10 engine that is found in the competition R8 LMS GT3 class race car. The 5.2-liter, 10-cylinder engine benefits from many of the same innovations found on the 4.2 FSI V8, while the addition of two extra cylinders produces substantial power gains. With a high compression ratio of 12.5:1, the R8 V10 FSI produces a thrilling 525 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Despite the marked increase in power, the V10 weighs only 68 pounds more than the V8. The 5.2 FSI utilizes an aluminum block fortified wîth silicon crystals for added strength, as well as aluminum cylinder heads. Redline arrives at 8,700 rpm, meaning that each piston travels 88 feet per second.

The result of this engineering is an Audi R8 Coupe wîth a 196 mph top speed.. The R8 Coupe 5.2 quattro accelerates from 0-60 mph in a scant 3.7 seconds. In the case of the Audi R8 Spyder, the same 5.2 FSI V10 drives the roadster to 62 mph in just 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 194.49 mph. From the rear, the remarkable road presence of the R8 could not be more apparent. The 2011 Audi R8 is 75 inches across for the Spyder and 76 inches for the Coupe, giving it a remarkably wide track. Needless to say, this results in excellent grip and cornering ability. The Coupe features a large rear glass hatch that reveals the longitudinally mounted engine, while the new Spyder maintains a roadster design wîth straked cooling vents across the rear plane. LED taillights dominate the rear styling of each model, while large dual exhaust exits and ventilation further point to the sporting prowess of the Audi R8 models.

Transmissions

Two transmissions are available for the Audi R8 Coupe and Spyder. For drivers who demand a classic sports car experience, a smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox is available on the Audi R8 4.2 quattro and the Audi R8 Coupe and Spyder 5.2 FSI. With a short throw and perfectly chosen gear ratios, the six-speed manual transmission is built to withstand power from either engine while still delivering the finesse that discerning sports car drivers demand. It features a beautifully crafted shift gate design for rifle bolt accuracy. The Audi R8 line also is available wîth one of the most technologically advanced gearboxes available today – the R tronic® six-speed transmission. Capable of fast gear changes of 0.1 second, the R tronic delivers a near-uninterrupted flow of power from either engine. Precise shift paddles mounted behind the sport §teering wheel allow the driver to choose gears quickly and accurately. (Of course, motorists can also use the shift lever in the center console).

Interior
Audi engineers applied the same attention to detail to the sports cars’ interiors. High quality leather covers well-bolstered and comfortable sports seats as well as a tri-spoke, lightweight magnesium, flat-bottom §teering wheel. The driver-oriented dashboard houses a high-resolution display, while MMI® controls are located just below, poised at the fingertips (optional on R8 4.2 quattro Coupe, standard on Audi R8 5.2 quattro Coupe and Spyder). The race-bred speedometer and tachometer of the Audi R8 models are enclosed in teardrop bezels and provide the driver wîth important information at the glance of an eye. With seating for two, there is no mistaking the intentions of these vehicles, yet the cockpit remains functional and spacious, wîth room for two golf bags behind the seats in the Audi R8 4.2 quattro.
In the case of the Audi R8 Spyder, the lines offer a unique interpretation of the dynamics of a high-performance sports car. Both the side panels and engine cover are composed of carbon fiber composite to minimize weight. Drivers are free to open the car to the elements or simply drop the rear-center glass window wîth the top up to let the sultry tones of the 5.2 FSI® V10 enter the cabin. To allow for communication, the R8 Spyder includes available full iPod® integration and the world’s first Bluetooth® microphones integrated in the seatbelts to curtail wind noise during calls even when the top is down.

Safety

The Audi focus on superior engineering does not stop at the engine and drivetrain. Each Audi R8 comes equipped wîth the latest in Audi life-saving technology. As wîth all Audi vehicles, an exceptionally rigid skeleton protects the cabin in the event of a collision. The lightweight ASF® body is made almost entirely of aluminum, wîth the exception being small pieces made of magnesium. The Coupe’s entire frame weighs just 463 pounds – making it lighter than most motorcycles. Large crumple zones are built to direct crash energy down and away from occupants, and the seats are designed to minimize injury from a rear impact. In the event of a collision, the Audi R8 automatically shuts off the vehicle fuel system and battery to minimize the likelihood of a fire and unlocks the doors to prevent entrapment.

Options

The 2011 Audi R8 is available in three trim levels: the R8 4.2 quattro, the R8 5.2 quattro and R8 5.2 quattro Spyder. In each trim, the R8 uses Audi magnetic ride – a continuously variable suspension damping system built to provide ride control that is both comfortable and sportoriented. The driver may choose between ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ modes to define the driving experience. Servotronic power §teering varies sensitivity based on vehicle speed. ESP®, ASR and EDL also are standard. Outside, tone-on-tone sideblades and a retractable rear spoiler join Audi xenon plus headlights to give the Audi R8 a distinctive exotic flair. Large quad chrome exhaust tips hint at the power of the R8 4.2 FSI engine, while dual oval pipes speak to the 5.2 FSI nestled in both Coupe and Spyder trim. LED daytime running lights, brake lights and turn signals are standard, as are rain-sensing windshield wipers. Full LED headlight assemblies are standard on R8 5.2 models.

Occupants are treated to Alcantara® and leather-clad 10-way adjustable sport seats in the R8 4.2 quattro and full Fine Nappa leather sport seats in the Audi R8 5.2 quattro Coupe and Audi R8 5.2 quattro Spyder, all of which also are three-step heated. The flat-bottom, three-spoke §teering wheel tilts and telescopes and houses controls for the infotainment system. Automatic climate control joins a central locking system and one-touch up/down power windows as standard equipment. A driver information system inside the instrument cluster indicates outside temperature, gear position, tire pressure information and vehicle speed and includes a five-function trip computer and lap timer. Electronic cruise control, HomeLink® universal garage door opener and Bluetooth hands-free offer additional convenience.

Finally, the Audi R8 4.2 quattro comes standard wîth a radio concert sound system wîth seven speakers, five-channel amplifier, SIRIÚS® satellite radio, auxilliary input and MP3 capability. Aside from the unmatched performance of the 5.2-liter V10, the Audi R8 5.2 quattro and R8 5.2 quattro Spyder enjoy much of the same equipment found on the R8 4.2 FSI, wîth even more standard amenities. They come standard wîth a specifically-tuned suspension to handle the added weight and power from the 10-cylinder engine. Outside, unique 19-inch wheels, Aluminum Optic engine cover vents, high-gloss black Singleframe grille, extended rear underbody diffuser, flared rocker panels and flared tone-on-tone sideblades distinguish the car from its brother. The most noticeable change comes courtesy of the Sydney Opera Houseinspired LED headlamps. The Audi R8 5.2 quattro is the first vehicle in the world to use LED lighting for all headlamp functions, including high and low beams, daytime running lights and turn signals. The lamps emit a color temperature of 6,000 degrees Kelvin – close to that of daylight.

Price: $47,100 – $48,500.

Invoice: $43,900 – $45,200.

Design

With a progressive exterior and a purposeful style, the 2011 Audi A4 maintains its presence as a leader in automotive design. A taut musculature denoted by strong shoulders and a dramatically raked roofline has become synonymous wîth the Audi name, and the A4 showcases both of these traits. Innovations like LED accent lighting and a bold Singleframe® grille now are instantly recognizable by both the public and the competition.

Engines

In the A4, each powerplant benefits from direct-injection technology to increase efficiency and response. The 2.0 TFSI turbocharged inline four and the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 both take advantage of forced induction to increase horsepower and torque without the penalty of added fuel consumption. The 2.0 TFSI delivers an impressive 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, thanks to Audi’s innovative direct-injection fuel system. Gasoline is injected into the engine’s combustion chambers at the high pressure of 2,175 psi, which ensures a fine spray pattern for a more efficient burn.

The seamless power delivery of the water-cooled turbocharger allows the 2.0 TFSI to develop peak torque from just 1,500 rpm. The result is a driving experience that rewards buyers wîth an instant rush of power at nearly any engine speed. The 2011 Audi S4 is powered by an all-aluminum 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 engine wîth 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. Despite these remarkable figures, the S4 is able to achieve 28 mpg on the highway, a remarkable 27 percent improvement over the previous generation S4. With an immediately responsive drive-by-wire throttle system, the 3.0 TFSI offers an instant connection from driver input to a resulting surge of acceleration.

Drivetrain

The 2011 Audi A4 is available wîth the buyer’s choice of three transmissions. A multitronic® continuously variable transmission is available on the A4 FrontTrak,® while quattro® equipped vehicles can be optioned wîth either a six-speed manual gearbox or an all-new for 2011 Tiptronic® eight-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) More than a standard automatic transmission, Tiptronic allows the driver to select the ideal gear manually, wîth nearly imperceptible shifts. An additional Sport mode maintains engine speed longer to make the most out of each engine’s
strengths.

The 2011 S4 is available wîth a six-speed manual or the brilliant Audi seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch transmission, which allows the driver to enjoy power from the 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 in nearly uninterrupted bursts – providing the perfect marriage of speed and comfort. The system works using dual clutches and twin input shafts, thereby allowing the computer to ‘predict’ which gear the driver intends to use and prep the gear for action before it is selected. Also available on the S4 is quattro wîth Sport rear differential, which gives the S4 a new level of road holding ability, by actively controlling the distribution of torque between the two rear wheels, effectively overdriving the outside wheel in corners. This ‘forces’ the front end of the vehicle into the corner, thus eliminating understeer and creating more attainable excitement for the driver. In addition, the Sport rear differential works wîth ESP® during accident avoidance maneuvers to keep the S4 stable and composed in emergencies.

Interior

With an interior designed to be spacious and inviting, the Audi A4 is driver oriented, while also catering to passengers. From the driver’s seat, it is apparent immediately that the Audi A4 shares DNA wîth the luxurious A8. The cockpit incorporates a center stack tilted slightly toward the pilot, and brilliant, easy-to-read gauges hint of an athletic nature. The long-standing Audi commitment to craftsmanship and quality materials is obvious in the 2011 Audi A4. Supportive seats are executed in high-quality leather, while brushed accents throughout the cabin draw the eye from one flowing surface to the next. With three interior colors from which to choose, buyers are guaranteed an interior choice designed to please the individual palette.

The 2011 Audi A4 offers an unparalleled array of cutting edge technology to make the driving experience safer and more relaxed. The available Audi parking system wîth rear backup camera, standard for 2011 on the Prestige trim level, makes getting in and out of tight spaces easier than ever. Audi side assist alerts the driver to blind spot dangers, while adaptive cruise control automatically accelerates or decelerates to keep pace wîth traffic. A host of entertainment options makes the Audi A4 perfectly suited for individuals who demand the most from their vehicles. The available Audi music interface ensures seamless iPod® integration – channeling buyers’ favorite music through an unrivalled 505-watt 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen® Sound System. Further enhancing the entertainment experience, available state-ofthe- art hard drive based navigation wîth third generation MMI® system now includes HD Radio™ for 2011.

The A4 continues to offer buyers more interior space than any of its direct competitors. Occupants are treated to expansive legroom, thanks in part to the A4′s overall length of 15.4 feet. Buyers also can take advantage of the 60/40 folding rear seats to transport even larger baggage, including skis and snowboards. Despite the generous interior space, the A4 remains light on its feet thanks to an ever-present focus on lightweight, rigid body construction. Going further, the A4 Avant offers an even greater level of utility and convenience, wîth a remarkable 17.3 cubic feet of cargo space – a figure that is unmatched by the competition. The cargo area is completely lined wîth carpeting that is especially durable and stain resistant. Four lashing eyes in the floor are standard, as are two chrome hooks on the sides that can be adjusted to secure the bulkiest baggage. Buyers also can opt for the convenience of a power tailgate, which comes standard on Prestige trim level models.

Suspension

While the smooth ride quality and athletic driving feel of the 2011 Audi A4 are enhanced by an incredibly rigid body design and the extensive use of lightweight materials, the advanced suspension is the real star of the show. The Audi A4 2.0T comes standard wîth an advanced five-link front suspension wîth upper and lower control arms and anti-roll bar. In the rear, an independent trapezoidal suspension wîth anti-roll bar helps provide the world-class handling characteristics that buyers have come to associate wîth the Audi brand. Each individual link is crafted from high-quality aluminum to reduce weight at each wheel, and a strong cross member is made of the same metal to enhance rigidity without sacrificing the Audi A4′s lightweight character. The 2011 Audi A4 offers extremely precise §teering, thanks in part to a §teering box located lower and further forward than on other comparable models. The effect is noticeable immediately, giving the Audi A4 a light and agile dimension. The innovative engineering combines wîth Audi dynamic §teering to vary the ratio depending on vehicle speed. This equates to a more balanced system that offers quicker lock-to-lock feedback at low speeds and stable cornering when the vehicle is traveling faster

Safety

Safety, as central to the Audi brand as its multiple Le Mans victories, is evident in the 2011 Audi A4, which features a number of advanced technologies designed to keep occupants out of harm’s way. The A4′s rigid body is built of ultra-high strength steel, using state-of-the-industry manufacturing processes. With components joined by traditional spot welding as well as new structural bonding techniques, the A4 has a body structure designed to absorb and deflect crash energy away from occupants.

Thanks to information gathered by the Audi Accident Research Únit, the Audi A4 also plays host to a gamut of life-saving technologies. For example, the §teering column can deform toward the front of the car by more than three inches to protect the driver. An array of sensors detects exactly how far the front seats are from the dashboard, allowing the Audi A4 to tension seatbelts actively to prevent occupants from injury when air bags inflate. Adjustable headrests also provide ample whiplash protection in the event of a rear collision. The 2011 Audi A4 incorporates seat-mounted side-impact air bags, front air bags for the passenger and driver, and expansive side-curtain air bags. Onboard air bag sensors can detect the severity of a crash and inflate accordingly. The result is a lower injury rate from airbag deployment.
