2012 Audi R8

The Audi R8 is available as both a Coupe and Spyder, wîth each style offering two levels of power – a 4.2-liter FSI® V8 or a 5.2-liter FSI V10. The V8 generates 430 hp at 7,900 rpm, wîth 316 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 – 6,000 rpm, while the 5.2 liter achieves 525 hp at 8,000 rpm wîth 391 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. Either version can be paired wîth a manual or automatic R tronic® transmission. The R tronic provides extremely quick shifting and can be controlled by paddle shifters on the §teering wheel. Audi launch control also is featured wîth the R tronic, allowing for faster starts by controlling slip. The quattro® all-wheel-drive system is standard and ensures additional grip for all driving situations and surfaces.

The ASF® technology makes the R8 relatively lightweight while maintaining an extremely rigid frame to enhance performance. The unmistakable exterior design, wîth its low stance and forward cockpit, contribute to the dynamic look of the R8. A fully enclosed diffuser underbody minimizes lift, and the automatically-deployed rear spoiler ensures that sufficient downforce is deployed. Beautifully designed and prominent sideblades incorporate the air intakes that draw attention to the mid-engine design of the coupe. The engine packaging is meticulously designed to make the view through the glass covered coupe hatch a delight, while aluminum optic engine cooling vents adorn the Spyder.

The R8 Spyder delivers a holistic exterior design wîth integrated side air intakes that replace the sideblades in order to accommodate the soft top roof. The soft top opens and closes neatly in 19 seconds at up to speeds of 31 mph. The soft top enables tighter packaging when folded and lowers the center of gravity versus a hard top convertible design. The cover for the top is made of a carbon fiber composite, further reducing weight, while triple layer insulation minimizes cabin noise and insulates against cold and heat. The heated rear glass window is integrated into the bulkhead and can be raised and lowered via a switch. An aluminum optic A-pillar and windshield surround add a unique design element visible primarily when the top is down.

The interior of the R8 fully complements the exterior. Sleek and artful, the most prominent feature of the R8 interior is the monoposto design that features a large arch sweeping around the dashboard. With the wheels pushed to far corners of the R8, its maximized wheelbase provides a comparatively generous amount of interior space. Seats are constructed of either leather / Alcantara® for the 4.2 or Nappa leather in the 5.2. Thermal-resistant leather used for seats in the Spyder lowers the surface temperature by up to 68 degrees on hot, sunny days. Available leather options abound, allowing owners to customize the R8 to their personal tastes. Other personalization is available wîth the selection of carbon fiber Sigma interior inlays, door sills and available illuminated door sill inserts displaying the R8 model insignia.

Price: $114,200 – 196,800.
Invoice: $106,206 – 183,024.

The R8 features advanced technologies for which Audi has become known, including available Audi MMI®, available Audi MMI Navigation plus, and an available Bang & Olufsen® Sound System. The Bluetooth® microphone of the Spyder is integrated into the seatbelt to minimize wind noise while speaking via the Bluetooth system.ASF construction increases stability and provides an extremely rigid body shell, plus specially constructed front and rear energy absorbing zones provide protection in the event of a collision. ESC contributes to stability, and vehicle occupants are protected by a full complement of air bags, including front, seat and chest side, and knee airbags. A tire pressure monitoring system ensures that owners are warned if pressure falls below a preset threshold.

Body and Interior

The forward-thrust cockpit and the engine compartment behind it are key to the proportions of the R8. Large wheel wells and hungry air inlets visualize its potential, while the upright sideblade structures the flank. LED headlights are standard in ten-cylinder R8 models and available as an option for the eight-cylinder version. The body of the R8 is largely hand-built at the craft-scale production shop at the Neckarsulm site. Featuring an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF), it tips the scales at just 210 kilograms (462.97 lb) – ultra-lightweight construction in the extreme. The fully-enclosed diffuser underbody and the rear spoiler that slides out automatically help ensure that the R8 generates downforce at high speeds.

The key element of the interior is the monoposto, a large arc sweeping around the dashboard instruments. The relatively long wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft) allows for generous interior space. There is space for two golf bags behind the seats, and the luggage compartment under the front hatch offers an additional 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) of storage capacity. The R8 5.2 FSI quattro comes standard wîth Fine Nappa leather appointments, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the navigation system plus. The optional bucket seats from the Audi exclusive range exude concentrated racing style.

Drive

Two high-tech engines are available for the Audi R8. Both reflect the wealth of expertise which helped to fuel Audi’s numerous racing triumphs. The V8 and the V10 combine FSI gasoline direct injection wîth dry sump lubrication and a high-revving concept. Both captivate wîth their power, their responsiveness and their musical sound. The eight-cylinder unit launches the R8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.6 seconds en route to a top speed of 302 km/h (187.65 mph). The V10 is a touch faster, wîth a time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph).

Engine

The engines’ power flows to either a six-speed manual transmission or the R tronic controlled in this case via either a joystick on the center console or paddles on the §teering wheel. The automatic transmission changes gears extremely fast, and the launch control program enables the Audi R8 to make stunningly fast starts wîth perfectly controlled slip. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive is tailored to the mid-engine concept wîth a rear-biased axle load distribution, sending roughly 85 percent of the power to the rear wheels in the standard distribution. The heart of the system is a viscous coupling at the front axle, which can transfer up to 30 percent of the torque to the front within milliseconds, if needed.

Chassis

The chassis of the Audi R8 is just as well suited for blasting through corners as it is for casual cruising. Aluminum double wishbones locate the wheels up front and at the back. The setup for the R8 wîth V10 engine is somewhat stiffer than for the R8 4.2 FSI. The top model comes standard wîth 19-inch wheels. All four floating brake discs are internally vented and perforated. A total of 24 pistons clamp down on them. The optional carbon fiber-ceramic brakes are extremely lightweight, strong, and durable. The Audi magnetic ride adaptive shock absorber system is standard in the R8 5.2 FSI quattro and an option wîth the V8.

Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 Spyder has its own unique touches. It does not include the storage space behind the seats and sideblades on the flanks. The rear side panels and the large cover over the compartment for the top are made of a carbon-fiber composite. Two cowls extending to the spoiler lip give the long back of the car a powerful profile. Typically Audi, the top is made of cloth, which keeps the total weight and the vehicle’s center of gravity low. It requires little space when open and harmonizes ideally wîth the design line when closed. With the standard hydraulic motor, the soft top opens and closes within 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). It is perfectly suitable for high-speed driving on the highway and is very quiet.

The separate wind deflector can be installed in just two steps. The heated glass rear window is integrated into the bulkhead separately and can be raised and lowered via a switch. The bulkhead also includes integrated rollover protection. The Spyder’s ASF body is reinforced in key areas, yet weighs just six kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The leather seats of the open two-seater are specially pigmented to reduce heating as a result of the sun’s rays. Among the other options is the seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit, which makes it possible to talk on the phone wîth the top down on the highway. Integrated into the belts are three small microphones; a fourth is mounted on the windshield frame. The seat belt microphone is also available for the R8 Coupé.

2012 Audi Q5

Distinctive changes promise to maintain the 2012 Audi Q5 in its position as a leader among luxury crossover vehicles. The Audi Q5 3.2 quattro models for 2012 offer the S line® package wîth key exclusives such as S line badging, the iconic Audi Singleframe® grille wîth vertical chrome accents, S line specific front and rear bumpers, S line interior doorsills and retractable, highpressure headlight washers. A choice of two engine sizes — the award-winning 2.0 TFSI® turbocharged direct injection and the agile 3.2 FSI® — provide the power and engineering craftsmanship that one expects from Audi.

The 2.0T engine generates 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 and 1,500 rpm respectively, and the 3.2 liter puts out 270 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 and 3,000 rpm. Both power plants feature the Audi valvelift system, designed for increased power and torque while reducing fuel consumption. The Audi Q5 2.0T quattro® utilizes an eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic®, while the 3.2 liter is mated to a six-speed automatic wîth Tiptronic. Both transmissions feature the dynamic sport shift program. Power is translated to the road via quattro permanent all-wheel drive to help ensure better grip on dry road surfaces and more confidence on slippery roads.

Many customers have cited the exterior design of the Audi Q5 as a primary purchase reason for choosing it over competitors in its §egmènt. Low overhangs that lead to strong fender arches give the Audi Q5 a powerful stance. The sleek roofline and integrated body rails, add to the visual appeal of the vehicle and assist in maintaining a low drag coefficient of 0.33, which improves fuel economy and reduces wind noise. The Audi Q5 is constructed using Audi’s renowned ASF® technology that helps provide enhanced stability and also lightens the vehicle considerably. The distinctive Audi Singleframe grille and unmistakable LED daytime running lights, as well as the clean, dynamic lines, give the Q5 a design that looks as nimble as it handles.

The interior wood inlays on the door panels, center console and passenger dashboard evoke an inviting warmth. Components are well executed throughout the interior, wîth easy-to-read instrumentation, and easy-to-reach controls. The center console houses technologies for which Audi has built a reputation, wîth the Q5 offering Audi MMI®, available Audi MMI Navigation plus and Audi music interface. Interior space is abundant thanks to the long wheel-base of the Q5. Leather seating surfaces and available Milano leather seating surfaces make the Audi Q5 a place where drivers and passengers enjoy spending time.

Price: $35,600 – 43,000.
Invoice: $33,108 – 39,990.

Safety in the Audi Q5 is further enhanced in a number of ways, including both driver and front passenger advanced dual-stage airbag supplemental restraints, front seat-mounted side thorax airbag supplemental restraints (again for both driver and front passenger), plus Sideguard® head curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Driver assistance systems such as available Audi side assist and Electronic Stability Control can help drivers navigate the road. The Q5 combines the dynamics of a sporty sedan wîth a highly variable interior space. The mid-sized SÚV is the ideal companion for active people at any stage of life.

Body and Interior

With a height of 1.65 meters (5.41 ft), the 4.63 meter (15.19 ft) Q5 is very low-slung for an SÚV. It features sporty proportions and an elegant, muscular design. There are three versions available for the add-on body parts; Audi also offers attractive styling packages. The tailgate, which wraps around the C-pillars, is made of lightweight aluminum, as is the engine hood. The body includes a large proportion of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels.

Interior space is generous, and the luggage compartment’s base capacity of 540 liters (19.07 cubic ft) can be increased to 1,560 liters (55.09 cubic ft) by folding down the rear seat backs. Audi also offers an optional rear bench seat, which can be moved by 100 millimeters (3.94 in) and features a load-through hatch. The front passenger’s seat is available wîth an optional folding seat back. The front seats can optionally be adjusted, heated and cooled electrically.

Drive

Audi offers the Q5 wîth a choice of six engines: three gasoline engines and three TDI units. All engines are direct injection units; five of them are turbocharged. The torque of the gasoline engines is further boosted by the Audi valvelift system, which switches the valve lift in two stages. Regardless of the engine variant, the Q5 recovers energy during braking; the four-cylinder models wîth manual transmission also come standard wîth the start-stop system and a gear-change indicator.

Chassis

The chassis also contributes to the sporty character of the Audi Q5. The five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension consist largely of aluminum components; the large brakes ensure rapid deceleration. The optional Audi drive select system manages the engine’s throttle response, the §teering characteristic and the shift points of S tronic. Two components that can be combined are adaptive damper control and dynamic §teering. The Audi Q5 also holds its own in rough terrain: the electronic stabilization program (ESP) and the anti-lock brake system (ABS) both have an offroad mode. The ESP features an additional function for road driving: If a roof rack is mounted, thus raising the center of gravity, the system intervenes somewhat sooner at the limit of handling.

Equipment

On request, Audi equips the Q5 wîth high-tech systems typical of the full-size category. Audi lane assist helps to keep in lane, while Audi side assist warns of possible hazards when changing lanes. The adaptive cruise control system maintains the desired interval between the performance SÚV and the vehicle ahead. An attractive range of multimedia modules is also available, ranging from the hard drive-based MMI navigation plus navigation system to a sound system from Bang & Olufsen.

Audi Q5 hybrid quattro

Rounding out the Q5 family is the Q5 hybrid quattro, wîth deliveries scheduled to begin late this year. The performance SÚV is the first full hybrid in the B premium §egmènt to be offered anywhere in the world wîth lithium-ion batteries standard. Designed as a parallel hybrid, the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro combines the performance of a six-cylinder model wîth the fuel economy of a four-cylinder version. Power is provided by a 2.0 TFSI wîth 155 kW (211 hp) and an electric motor wîth up to 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 Nm (154.89 lb-ft) of torque. System output is 180 kW (245 hp). The Audi Q5 hybrid reaches 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.1 seconds from a standing start and has a top speed of 225 km/h (139.81 mph). At a constant speed of 60 km/h (37.28 mph), it has a purely electric range of up to three kilometers (1.86 miles), and its top speed of 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in electric mode also sets standards. Average fuel consumption is 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.09 ÚS mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 159 grams per km (255.89 g/mile).

The performance SÚV can operate in one of five drive modes: Driving wîth the combustion engine alone, wîth the electric drive alone or in hybrid mode is possible, as are recuperation and boosting. The driver can choose between three modes. The EV characteristic map gives priority to the electric drive in the city; the D mode controls both the engine and the electric motor for optimal consumption; and the S mode is designed for a sporty driving style. An extensively modified eight-speed tiptronic serves the power transmission, without the aid of a torque converter. Instead there is the disc-shaped electric motor, which is combined wîth a multi-plate clutch. It connects and disconnects the electric motor and the TFSI precisely, gently and quickly in every situation.

A lithium-ion battery system, weighing a mere 36.7 kg (80.91 lb), serves as the energy store for the electric motor. The compact unit beneath the cargo floor hardly reduces luggage space at all. The battery provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and 39 kW of power. Two different methods are used to air-cool the battery, depending on need: wîth air from the passenger compartment or wîth air from a cooling circuit coupled to the main automatic air conditioning system. With a curb weight of just 1,910 kg (4,210.83 lb), the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro is the lightest hybrid SÚV on the global market. Its hybrid components weigh less than 130 kilograms (286.60 lb).

2012 Audi Q7

Q7 customers have the option of a gasoline turbocharged, fuel-injected 3.0 liter TFSI engine, or a powerful yet fuel efficient V6 turbocharged direct injection TDI clean diesel engine. Both variants provide more than enough power for city or highway driving and have the ability to tow up to 5,500 lb (6,600 wîth the available tow hitch package). With 280 hp at 4,920 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 rpm for the 3.0 TFSI, and 225 hp at 3,750 rpm and a whopping 406 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm for the TDI model, the Audi Q7 truly combines power wîth refined driving dynamics. The higher output 3.0T S line increases horsepower to 333. The driver and passengers will appreciate the sense that the Q7 is sure-footed as well, thanks to the latest-generation quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system wîth asymetric/dynamic torque distribution in a 40/50 split. The eight-speed automatic transmission wîth Tiptronic® and dynamic shift program adapting to more than 200 shift programs delivers smooth shifts and fuel efficient operation.
The exterior of the Q7 is athletic and muscular, from the Singleframe® grille and unmistakable LED headlamps to the mirror-mounted blinkers. The design, while visually appealing, is practical as well, wîth a coefficient drag of between 0.35 and 0.37, depending on the suspension choice, to aid fuel efficiency. For all of its power and utility, the Audi Q7 features a luxurious interior designed for a premium driving experience, as well as passenger functionality and comfort. From heated and available cooled, twelve-way power front seats, to the fore and aft adjustable rear middle seats for increased legroom as well as the foldable seats in the third row wîth individual cup holders and storage compartments, the Q7 boasts variability and a pleasant cabin from all seating positions. This is even more pronounced wîth the available panoramic roof that gives the cabin a lighter, open feeling. Should the heat of the sun be too much to bear, pressing a button rolls the electric sunshade across the panoramic glass to provide shade and minimizing heat entry into the cabin.

The 2012 Audi Q7 offers the most advanced Audi technologies to make the motoring experience intuitive and connected. With Audi connect, the 2012 Audi Q7 models bring the world of mobile broadband to the car for the first time. Audi connect enables first-to-market Google Earth™ integration, which redefines the navigation experience. The realistic panoramic views and high-resolution 3D satellite and aerial imagery provides drivers wîth a better navigation experience. Among the standard features in the Audi Q7 are two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, a light and rain sensor and the MMI radio operating system. A power rear hatch (standard wîth the top engines) and a rail-based load securing set for baggage are available for sports, recreation and vacation travel. Audi offers an entire system of infotainment modules. The top-of-the-line version, MMI navigation plus, integrates a hard disk drive for navigation, music, and telephone data; a color monitor wîth 3D graphics; a DVD player; and voice control.

A ÚMTS module works together wîth the Bluetooth online car phone to establish a connection to the Internet and deliver the latest specially selected news, travel and weather information plus Google POI information to the vehicle. Drivers can plan their routes on their home computers, upload them to a special section of the Internet site www.audi.com and download them from there on starting the trip. A push of a button is all it takes to display the map wîth attractive visuals, backed wîth aerial and satellite images from Google Earth, which are also delivered on demand to the vehicle via ÚMTS. Another system feature, the WLAN hotspot, enables passengers to connect mobile devices.Another attractive function is Audi online traffic information, which provides up-to-the-minute traffic information and works faster than existing TMC and TMC pro solutions. To go online, the driver only has to insert a data-capable SIM card into the card reader. A cell phone featuring the SIM Access Profile can also be used. No additional fees or separate contracts are required. Given the high data volumes, however, Audi does recommend an appropriate flat rate. A special highlight is the 1,000 watt Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System wîth 14 speakers. Modern assistance systems round out the list of options.

2012 Audi A4

The Audi A4 was a compact executive vehicle built by the German automaker Audi that was the successor to the Audi 80. This vehicle holds the distinction of single-handedly reviving the Audi brand following its large sales slump two years prior. The A4 was available as a saloon/sedan or an estate/wagon. During the 2nd version the model was called the B6 and the 3rd generation was dubbed the B7. A Cabriolet version was also introduced, though it was not retained for the 4th generation which was called the B8. The A4 quickly became a favorite among luxury-car buyers thanks to its sleek look, well-appointed cabin, sharp handling and available Quattro all-wheel drive. The interior featured a truly European ambience with its firm, comfortable seating, it also featured tight panel gaps, high-quality materials and gave a very supple ride and willing performance.

Internally, the first generation of the Audi A4 was known as the Typ 8D and was introduced in 1994 on the Volkswagen B5 platform which was shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat. The platform featured a longitudinal engine and standard front-wheel drive though many enthusiasts preferred the optional Quattro four-wheel drive system. Originally the A4 was introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan, but the following year the Avant; Estate/wagon showed up the following year. European customers could opt for a variety of engines that included between 1.6 and 2.8 liters, and a 1.9 L Diesel that was available with VW’s new ‘Pumpe Düse’ technology that was capable of achieving a high power value of 110 PS. At the time, the Audi’s 2.8 L V6 that was carried over from the original 80/90 was the only engine option that was available in North America until 1997.

The first model in the Volkswagen Group, the Audi A4 featured the new 1.8 L 20V motor with five valves per cylinder and was based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race vehicle. Producing 150 PS, a turbocharged version had 155 ft/lb of torque. In 1996, this technology was added to the V6 family, beginning with the 2.8 L V6 30V which now produced 193 PS. Based on the unit that Porsche had developed for their 964-generation 911, Audi introduced their new Tiptronic transmission on the B5 platform. Offering a choice of driving the vehicle as either a fully automatic operation or with a manual override of the gear ratios, the transmission was a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter.

In 1997 a revised B5 Audi A4 range was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Sales began in Europe in early 1998. Replacing the 2.8 L 12-valve was a newly introduced 2.8 L 30-valve engine. The range received an important addition, the 2.5 L V6 TDI diesel engine with 150 PS and standard Quattro and a six-speed gearbox, along with the new high-performance S4. New updates included new taillights, door handles, headlights, and other minor exterior and interior changes. Halfway through the 1998 model year, the 1.8T engine was available outside of Europe and had its power output raised to 170 PS. The original KKK KO3 turbocharger was upgraded with a KO3s (sport) unit. The 30-valve unit that had been available in Europe for two years replaced the 12-valve V6 engine. An even higher performance RennSport model was introduced in 1999; the RS4 Avant which was available only in Avant body-style just like the RS2.

The Audi A4 introduced a hybrid version in 1997. Audi was the first European car manufacturer to put a hybrid vehicle into series production, the third generation Audi duo then based on the A4 Avant. Internally, the all new A4 model was dubbed the Typ 8E and was introduced in late 2000 and was now riding on the all new Volkswagen B6 platform. The all-new styling of the Audi A4 was inspired on the C5; second generation Audi A6. The original 1.6 L base model didn’t change, but most other petrol/gas engines received power upgrades or displacement increases. Now available in two additional versions, the 1.8 L 20-valve Turbo came with either 150 or 180 PS, this one came with a standard six-speed gearbox. The naturally aspirated 1.8 L straight-4 and 2.8 L V6 were replaced by 2.9 L and all-aluminum 3.0 L units. The most powerful of these was capable of 220 PS and 221 lb/ft of torque. Upgraded to 130 PS, the 1.9 TDI engine was now available with Quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The 2.5 V6 TDI high-end model was unveiled with 180 PS and standard Quattro. Halfway through 2001 the Avant was unveiled.

Audi upgraded power to the 1.8 Turbo engine for 2002 to163 and 190 PS. The 190 was designated by a red T with both available with Quattro and in the 2.5 TDI intermediate version to 163 PS. Fuel Stratified Injection was also available with a 2.0 engine. The S4 was reintroduced the following year and was now powered by a 344 PS 4.2 LV8 engine. An A4 Cabriolet convertible variant was also introduced and finally replaced the 80-based Audi Cabriolet that had been discontinued in 1998. The variant included an electro-hydraulic operated hood which could be lowered in less than 30 seconds and also incorporated some styling changes which found their way to the saloon version.

Generally regarded as being the best of its type in the entire world, a continuously variable transmission was developed by LuK, named multitronic which was the replacement of the Tiptronic on front-wheel drive models. This transmission was well praised due to its light weight and promptness in response. The use of this transmission was limited to models with a maximum of 229 lb/ft of torque. The trunk was redesigned to remove the extension of the top edge with a smoother fold line, and the taillight assembly now forms part of the top line. Introduced in the North American market, an ‘Ultra Sport package’ named Ultra Sport came along shortly before the B6 was replaced by the B7. This package included aluminum interior trim and doors sills, front and rear spoilers, ‘S line’ steering wheel, side valence and 18-inch RS4 wheels.

In 2004 Audi introduced a very largely revised A4 with the internal designation of B7. The new range A4 continued to utilize the already existing Volkswagen B6 platform, a chassis derived from the outgoing B6, but featuring heavily revised steering settings, new engine ranges, suspension geometry, navigation systems and chassis electronics. The internal platform nomenclature used PL46 for both B6 and B7 chassis. Also unchanged from the B6 A4 were the Typ 8E and 8H internal designations. Many additions were added to the engine lineup. FSI, or Fuel Stratified Injection was introduced in 2005 on the 2.0 TFSI and 3.2 V6 FSI petrol/gasoline engines along with other refinements, and increased power output to 200 and 255 PS. Both engines utilize a four-valve cylinder design. The earlier 5-valve design was not compatible with the FSI direct injection system. Combining Pumpe Düse, or PD, technology, the 2.0 TDI diesel engine with 16 valves for the first time, and the larger 2.5 TDI was increased to 3.0 L offering 204 PS Quattro permanent four-wheel drive remained available on most A4 models. The 5-speed manual transmission was finally deleted in favor of a 6-speed. Once again, multitronic transmission is available on front-wheel drive models. A 6-speed Tiptronic transmission is available on Quattro four-wheel drive models.

Audi reintroduced the ultra-high performance RS4 to the lineup, in addition to the higher-performance S4 which carried over the powertrain of the B6 S4. This was the first time on the saloon/sedan and Cabriolet body with a normally aspirated 4.2 V8 FSI engine. The 3rd generation Torsen T-3 quattro system used a ‘default’ asymmetric 40:60 front-rear torque distribution. Introduced in late 2005, a limited edition variant was dubbed ‘DTM Edition’ and was reintroduced in 2006 as a regular option. The 2.0T FSI engine was now engineered to 220 PS wit standard Quattro. In the same manner of the C6 Audi A6, the front grill assembly has changed to be a tall trapezoidal shape. Arriving later than the other two body variants, the B7 Cabriolet model was introduced. Sales began in February of 2006. The Cabriolet featured an entry-level 2.0 TDI version. Offering many safety features, the Audi A4 featured side airbags, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stabilization Programme and its available Quattro four-wheel drive. The Audi A4 also received the IIHS ‘Top Safety Pick For 2007′.

The A4 Avant with the diesel engine is considered to be the most reliable vehicle available on the market according to 2007 Swedish vehicle inspection data, with vehicle inspection rejection rate of 0.0% in 3 year old category. Face-lifted and rebadged, the B7 series became the SEAT Exeo in 2008 with styling changes to both the front and rear, and also incorporated interior trim from the A4 Cabriolet. In August of 2007, Audi introduced photos, the first official photos of the B8 series A4. The vehicle was unveiled to the public at the September 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Available models were the Saloon/Sedan and the Avant (estate/wagon). The Avant debuted at the March 2008 Geneva Auto Show. Built on a variant of the Audi Modular Longitudinal Platform, the B8 A4 was constructed on a platform which was also utilized in the Audi A5 coupe. Earlier A4 chassis were limited in wheelbase because of the relationship between the engine, front axle and transmission, and the MLP allows for a reduced front overhang. This resulted in a greater wheelbase length without he same increase in overall length.

The center of gravity is now effectively redistributed rearwards, which now improved handling by effectively balancing vehicle mass in between the front and rear axles. The front:rear weight ratio of B8 A4 is approximately 55:45 depending on the body style and engine. Handling was also improved over earlier A4 platforms due to the relocation of the steering rack in front of the axle. The length of the B8 A4 was also increased in length by 117 mm (4.6 in) over the earlier Audi B7 and gave room for additional seating legroom. The curb weight dropped around 10%, the trunk was increased to 17 cu ft. for the saloon version. With the rear seats folded down, the A4 Avant has a maximum capacity of 1,430 liters. Introduced in the China market in November 2008 was a long wheelbase version called the A4L. This model came with a 2.4 inch longer wheelbase and 2.0 inch longer length.

Standard on the A4 was the MMI system; Multi Media Interface, electronic park brake, LED daytime running lights and speed sensitive steering. Optional on the Audi A4 was Audi Side Assist, Audi Lane Assist, Advanced Key; keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation system with full MMI with 7 inch screen, adaptive headlights with cornering technology, Audi drive select and advanced parking system front and rear plus reversing camera. In 2004, the Audi Sport A4 DTM was introduced and was entered into the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters series. The DTM was a V8 engined silhouette racing car that resembled the A4. These vehicles are identified by Audi Sport R-series designations. Today buyers can purchase an Audi A4 in convertible, sedan and wagon configurations. The wagon and A4 sedan are in their fourth generation which began in the 2009 model year. The newest A4 sedans and wagons feature more interior room, more high-tech gadgetry and improved driving dynamics. Since convertible A4′s have not yet been produced on the four-generation current platform, the Audi continues to be sold in 3rd generation models.

Introduction

In recent years, Audi has been making big strides in terms of improving its recognition in the marketplace as a premium European automaker. A key component to the brand’s effort is the A6. Now in its third generation, this midsize sedan and wagon (known as the Avant) boasts V6 or V8 power, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and class-leading interior quality. Plus, with a starting price of less than $45,000, the V6-powered 2008 A6 dramatically undercuts models from BMW and Mercedes-Benz and easily matches up to competitors from Japan. In an effort to increase the A6′s visual appeal, the former S line exterior trim package has been added to all models for 2008. This includes a new grille and bumpers, an integrated rear trunk spoiler, a rear diffuser and 18-inch wheels.

For those looking for a more sporting look inside, a new S line interior package is now available that includes front sport seats, a three-spoke steering wheel and various decorative additions. Buyers can choose from two varieties of 2008 Audi A6 sedan (there is also a high-performance S6 variant), the V6-powered 3.2 and V8-powered 4.2. Neither will set the world ablaze with their acceleration, but these world-class engines manage to propel the A6 with more than enough gusto for most luxury buyers. For those interested in extra utility, the sleek A6 Avant wagon is an excellent choice, providing arguably more style than the other wagons in its class can muster.

Virtually all A6s found at Audi dealerships come with options on them, but even then, a well-equipped 3.2 model still rings in at less than its German competition. Only the Acura RL, Cadillac STS and Infiniti M35 can match the A6 3.2′s value. The A6 4.2, on the other hand, though costing less than German peers, is quite a bit pricier than some rivals, but remains one of the very few V8-powered cars in its class to offer all-wheel drive. On the whole, we’re pretty fond of the A6. Although not as fun as the BMW 5 Series and not as prestigious as the Mercedes E-Class, the 2008 Audi A6 is an excellent example of a car that does almost everything right. Whether you go for the sedan or wagon, the A6′s abundant luxury, sporty handling and comfortable ride make it a pleasurable vehicle for nearly all occasions.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2008 Audi A6 is available as a sedan and Avant (wagon). The sedan comes in 3.2 and 4.2 trim levels, and these numbers roughly correspond to the size of engine fitted. The Avant comes in the 3.2 trim only. Standard features on the 3.2 sedan include 18-inch alloy wheels, wood interior trim, a trip computer, leather seating, power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Audi’s MMI control interface and a 10-speaker stereo with a glovebox-mounted CD changer and satellite radio.

The 3.2 Avant is similar but adds a sunroof. The top-of-the-line 4.2 sedan provides adaptive xenon headlights, a sunroof, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, upgraded leather upholstery and driver memory settings. Nearly all A6 3.2 models found at dealerships will come with a premium package that essentially adds the features of the 4.2. Other options include 19-wheels with performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, an adaptive air suspension, rear park assist with a rearview camera, a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control, a navigation system, iPod integration and voice-recognition technology.

Interior

Since the mid-1990s, other carmakers have attempted to match Audi’s superior cabin craftsmanship, but the German brand has continually managed to improve upon near-perfection. The A6′s interior is a superb example of this, with exquisite materials, meticulous fit and finish and an overall attractive design. If you bought one based on its luxurious cabin alone, you wouldn’t be disappointed.

All A6 sedans and Avant wagons come with the Multi Media Interface (MMI) vehicle management system, which controls entertainment, communication and optional navigation functions via a 7-inch LCD display and a mouselike controller with supporting buttons mounted on the center console. There is a steep learning curve involved, but it’s much more user-friendly than BMW’s iDrive system. All A6s are particularly roomy, while the Avant wagon offers a spacious 34 cubic feet behind its rear seats and 59 cubes with them folded.

Exterior

People are likely to focus first on the A6′s large trapezoidal grille. The sedan has an upswept shoulder line and what Audi calls a “curved dome” in the middle of the hood. Wraparound taillights and a horizontal chrome trunk strip are installed. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard. Wagons can have a tailgate that opens at the push of a button.

Driving Impressions

Confident handling and sure-footed all-wheel drive are the A6′s strongest attributes. The car doesn’t qualify as a powerhouse, but acceleration is quite satisfying with the V-6. The A6 is quiet, but not eerily silent. The automatic transmission responds promptly and effectively with the V-6 and delivers a civilized experience. The taut suspension reacts promptly but not excessively. It can cope with most road roughness, but the ride can become bouncy through harsher stretches. The supportive, firm seats are on the hard side, and visibility over the left shoulder is limited. Most controls are satisfactory, but Audi’s MMI setup is still too complicated and the display screen isn’t in the driver’s line of sight.

While the 2008 Audi A6′s handling is softer than that of other top midsize luxury cars, it provides an excellent ride around town, along with predictable reflexes and precise steering through turns. The 3.1-liter V6 doesn’t have the punch of the bigger V8, but it’s no slouch and should provide adequate thrust for most luxury buyers. During high-speed cruising, the A6 provides a serene cabin and a confident feel at the wheel. Also, its Quattro all-wheel-drive system affords it prodigious grip around turns that makes spirited driving that much more fun, while at the same time providing additional security in foul weather.

Under the Hood

The base 3.1-liter V-6 makes 255 horsepower, while the available 4.2-liter V-8 produces 350 hp. Both engines team with a six-speed automatic transmission that incorporates Tiptronic for manually selected gear changes, but the V-6 can also work with a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Safety

Sideguard curtain airbags and side-impact airbags for the front seats are installed. Audi’s electronic stability system is standard. Antilock brakes include electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

2008 Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 places the concentrated power of the V8 TDI, an engine wîth a displacement of 4.2 liters, into a vehicle concept that impresses wîth its versatile sportiness. Even at its debut, the Q7 model series set new standards in its §egmènt. Now the 4.2 TDI is moving the bar even higher. Under the bonnet of the new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is the most powerful diesel engine the brand has to offer. The 4.2-liter capacity of the V8, which already powers the A8, generates an output of 326 bhp and 561 ft.-lbs. of torque at engine speeds between 1,800 to 2,500 rpm. The most powerful SÚV on the market has the drivability of a sports car. The Audi Q7 accelerates from standstill to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds and has a top speed of 145 mph. These figures are also the new best marks in its §egmènt.

The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI transmits its power through a six-speed tiptronic gearbox and a sportily tuned quattro driveline, which in normal situations splits propulsive force 40 percent to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear axle. Audi’s ‘adaptive air suspension’ is standard on this most powerful of diesels – it unites dynamic handling wîth the ride comfort of the luxury class. The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is also at the top of the tree wîth its standard convenience equipment. The leather design package gives the interior a noble feel. The electric tailgate makes lighter work of loading. A new feature is the Audi lane assist system, which emits a pulse to inform the driver before he inadvertently crosses a line on the carriageway.

Price: $42,500 – 58,600.
Invoice: $39,525 – 54,495.

Engine

Like all the engines in the Audi Q7 series, the 8-cylinder diesel heralds from Audi’s new V-engine family. With a displacement of 4,134 cc, the large TDI has a maintenance-free chain drive on the gearbox side for its four camshafts and ancillaries. The angle between the cylinder banks is 90 degrees, the cylinder spacing 90 millimeters, the overall length just 520 millimeters. The crankcase is made of the high-tech material vermicular graphite cast iron. This forms the basis for the light weight of the engine – just 565 pounds. The V8 TDI is a masterpiece of engineering. The best examples: the crankshaft is forged from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel; the cylinders are of cast aluminum. Low-friction roller cam followers actuate the 32 valves; electronically actuated flaps give the intake air into a defined swirl.

Two turbochargers wîth variable-geometry turbines provide solid torque even at low engine speeds while still allowing a high power output. Large charge-air coolers reduce the temperature of the compressed air. The common rail fuel injection system contains compact Piezo inline injectors that are extremely precise and fast switching. They are capable of up to five injection sequences per working cycle. The 4.2-litre TDI develops 326 bhp at 3,750 rpm. Between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm it induces its impressive pulling power onto the crankshaft – 561 ft.-lbs. of torque. The most powerful diesel engine in the SÚV §egmènt gives the Audi Q7 the sportiest performance of all diesels. The premium SÚV sprints from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds. On the motorway it can reach a top speed of 145 mph.

Driveline

The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is equipped as standard wîth the six-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox. The dynamic shift program (DSP) manages the gearshifts, whereby it orientates itself to the driver’s style and to the characteristics of the road. A special sport program – the S program – supports a particularly dynamic driving style. The driver can intervene at any time, either at the gear gate for the selector lever or at the optional paddles on the §teering wheel. As the tiptronic in the Audi Q7 was designed for high torque from the very outset, it does not need to be specially reinforced to team up wîth the V8 diesel engine.

Like all Audi Q7 models, the 4.2 TDI has a self-locking center differential wîth asymmetric/dynamic torque split. In regular operation, it transmits the drive force wîth a ratio 40:60 to the front and rear axles respectively. If needed, torque is distributed at varying ratios between the front and read axles according to the level of grip: optimum traction is provided at all times. This ultramodern quattro technology provides for sporty characteristics reminiscent of a rear-wheel drive vehicle, for exceptional agility and for a §teering precision that is to the greatest possible extent free of influences from the driveline.

Gear

The running gear on the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI supports this dynamic presence. And it superbly masters all of these challenges – whether in rough terrain or on the road, where handling characteristics, driving safety and comfort set the standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) Adaptive air suspension, fitted as standard, rounds off the outstanding character – the combination of pneumatic suspension and electronically controlled damping wîth dynamic roll stabilization forms the perfect synthesis of sportiness and maximum rolling comfort. The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI driver can set the adaptive air suspension to any of three maps, from very sporty to very comfortable. In addition, the system allows five ground clearance settings. Úp to 8.1 in. of air under the vehicle (offroad mode) is usually enough even on demanding terrain. The rear can be lowered by 3.0 in. for comfortable loading.

The Audi Q7 running gear is characterized by its high degree of sophistication. All four wheels are independently mounted on double wishbones. The axle components are made largely of aluminum. The servotronic §teering is distinctively direct and precise, giving a feeling of excellent road contact. The Audi Q7 4.2 TDI runs on sporty 18-inch alloy wheels wîth size 255/55 tires. Behind them, the four brake discs are internally ventilated and generously dimensioned – 13.8 in. in diameter on the front axle and 14.1 in. on the rear axle. The front brake calipers employ 6-piston technology, like on a top sports car.

Equipment

The leather design package is standard on the new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI. It includes inlays in three different types of wood or aluminum, and seat upholstery in Cricket leather. The front seats are electrically heated as standard. An on-board computer, cruise control system and multifunction §teering wheel enhance comfort for the driver. The much-praised ‘MMI basic’ control system is also fitted as standard. A practical tool is the electrically driven tailgate, whose opening angle can be programmed.

A range of assistance systems makes driving in Audi’s performance SÚV even safer. A new technology that is enjoying its debut in the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is Audi lane assist. It informs the driver if the lane is inadvertently left upwards of a speed of around 40 mph. If the system is activated and the driver has not indicated, then shortly before the vehicle crosses the line marking, which is detected by Audi lane assist, the system alerts the driver by making the §teering wheel vibrate (only in conjunction wîth the 4-spoke multifunction §teering wheel).

Optional Audi adaptive cruise control is a radar-supported cruise control system incorporating active distance control. If required it can be combined wîth the ‘braking guard’ brake assist system. Audi’s ‘side assist system’ employs radar technology to monitor the blind spot and inform the driver if it is dangerous to change lanes. The ‘Audi parking system advanced’ uses a camera for the view to the rear. The aid lines on the monitor make parking an enjoyable task.

Numerous interesting features are available for the dynamic lines of the exterior and for the spacious interior of the 200.2 in. long Audi Q7: 21-inch wheels, the ‘open sky system’ glass roof or the rail system for the generous luggage compartment, which has a capacity of up to 72.5 cu. ft. A deluxe climate control system is standard. The seats are extremely variable. Like all Audi Q7 models, the 4.2 TDI is available as a 5, 6 or 7-seater. A 4-seater version will be available at a later date.
