Audi offers a particularly low-emission clean diesel model in the guise of the Audi 3.0 TDI wîth 180 kW (245 hp). Complex technology is used here to minimize NOx emissions.

Body and Interior

The design of the Audi Q7 exudes performance and presence. The engine hood, the front fenders and the wrap-around rear hatch are aluminum. Add-on parts come standard in a contrasting color, or optionally in the body color wîth chrome trim. In Germany, the Audi Q7 models roll off the assembly line wîth the high-gloss package; other styling packages are available as options. Thanks to its 3.00 meter (9.84 ft) wheelbase, the 5.09 meter (16.70 ft) long Q7 has interior room to spare. 27 different seating configurations are possible.

The large SÚV is available as a five-, six- or seven-seater, wîth a choice of either individual comfort seats or a variable bench seat in the second row and an optional third row. The seat backs in the second row can be folded, increasing the cargo capacity from a volume of 775 liters (27.37 cubic ft) to 2,035 liters (71.87 cubic ft). Three different types of seats are available for the driver and the front-seat passenger, topped by climate-controlled comfort seats that can be heated and ventilated. With its elegant lines and many upscale details, the interior conveys the typical Audi feel-good factor. The fit and finish knows no compromise.

Chassis

The Audi Q7 has a sophisticated chassis. Aluminum double wishbones mounted on subframes guide the wheels. The optional adaptive air suspension (standard in the Q7 4.2 TDI) wîth electronic damper control varies the ground clearance depending on the situation. The driver can choose from five characteristics using the MMI operating system. Wheels range from 18 to 21 inches in diameter. Large, internally ventilated disc brakes provide the stopping power. Huge discs in lightweight carbon fiber-ceramic are optionally available for models wîth the two most powerful engines. The ESP stabilization program includes an offroad mode. A hill descent assist engages when going downhill offroad.

Equipment

Among the standard features in the Audi Q7 are two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning, a light and rain sensor and the MMI radio operating system. A power rear hatch (standard wîth the top engines) and a rail-based load securing set for baggage are available for sports, recreation and vacation travel. Audi offers an entire system of infotainment modules. The top-of-the-line version, MMI navigation plus, integrates a hard disk drive for navigation, music, and telephone data; a color monitor wîth 3D graphics; a DVD player; and voice control.

A ÚMTS module works together wîth the Bluetooth online car phone to establish a connection to the Internet and deliver the latest specially selected news, travel and weather information plus Google POI information to the vehicle. Drivers can plan their routes on their home computers, upload them to a special section of the Internet site www.audi.com and download them from there on starting the trip. A push of a button is all it takes to display the map wîth attractive visuals, backed wîth aerial and satellite images from Google Earth, which are also delivered on demand to the vehicle via ÚMTS. Another system feature, the WLAN hotspot, enables passengers to connect mobile devices.Another attractive function is Audi online traffic information, which provides up-to-the-minute traffic information and works faster than existing TMC and TMC pro solutions. To go online, the driver only has to insert a data-capable SIM card into the card reader. A cell phone featuring the SIM Access Profile can also be used. No additional fees or separate contracts are required. Given the high data volumes, however, Audi does recommend an appropriate flat rate. A special highlight is the 1,000 watt Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System wîth 14 speakers. Modern assistance systems round out the list of options.

2008 Chevrolet Aveo

The Aveo sedan offers a smart-lòòking exterior and a roomy interior that is characterized by thoughtful details and refinement. It also delivers a confident, dynamic driving experience and generous features usually seen in more expensive cars. It was designed to challenge expectations of what an entry-level car can deliver. Also returning for ’08 is the versatile Aveo5, a five-door model infused wîth the dynamic attributes of the Aveo sedan, but wîth a distinctive five-door body style. Both the Aveo5 and Aveo sedan are powered by a sophisticated and fuel-efficient 1.6L DOHC engine that offers fuel economy among the §egmènt’s best. More than just an affordable small car, the 2008 Chevy Aveo is an uncompromising performer, wîth a great design, a smooth, safe driving experience and amenities that until now were rare in the §egmènt.

Price: $10,235 – 13,920.
Invoice: $9,670 – 13,150.

Exterior Design

The Aveo sedan is high in style and progressive in attitude. It features crisp, sculpted lines and a wide, confident stance. The design skillfully creates the illusion of a larger car through such attributes as contoured side feature lines that rise from front to rear, pronounced ‘shoulders’ over the wheel openings and body-color door sills. Aveo sedan’s V-shaped hood lines point to its distinctively Chevy front fascia, which boasts a chrome-accented grille wîth prominent cross bar and iconic gold bowtie emblem. The sedan’s dynamic look is highlighted by premium cues, including three-dimensional, richly detailed headlamps that extend into the hood, available front fog lamps and bold, round taillamps, which are set within jeweled bezels.

Driving Experience

Chevy Aveo models are engineered and validated for a broad range of driving and road conditions around the world and tuned for a dynamic, well-planted driving experience. The suspension system features a MacPherson strut front suspension wîth coil springs and stabilizer bar, and an independent, torsion beam axle-mount compound link-type rear suspension wîth gas-charged shocks. Power-assisted, variable-rate rack-and-pinion §teering is standard. The §teering gear is mounted on the front suspension cross member for precise action and stability. Power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes are standard ; a four-channel ABS system is available. The four-sensor system – one at each wheel – incorporates electronic brake force distribution, which balances braking performance based on such factors as road conditions and the weight of passengers and/or cargo.

Drive-enhancing features on the 2008 Aveo sedan also include:

• A wide, solid stance and long wheelbase (97.6 inches / 2479 mm) wîth a front tread of 57.1 inches and rear tread of 56.3 inches deliver a smooth, confident, stable ride. This wide footprint is among the best in class, making the car very surefooted, imparting a sense of confidence and stability among driver and passengers.

• A 17-mm front stabilizer bar combined wîth higher rate front springs and more highly damped front shocks minimize the amount of vehicle roll and increase the roll damping to provide more precise control for the driver. The suspension bushings also contribute to the precise handling control. This fully retuned suspension package provides a distinctively European-style performance and feel.

• Valve tuning in the rack and pinion hydraulic-assist §teering system is consistent wîth the suspension tuning to provide more precise control.

New, 15-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels are standard on Aveo sedan LT and available on LS (including Aveo5). Fourteen-inch steel wheels wîth a bolt-on wheel cover are standard on LS.

Powertrain

Powering Aveo and Aveo5 is GM’s proven, sophisticated 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces 103 horsepower (77 kW) and 107 lb.-ft. of torque (148 Nm). The engine is enhanced by an electronic throttle control and variable geometry induction system, which help maximize power across the rpm range. The engine’s variable geometry induction system is designed wîth a longer runner length at slower speeds to increase low-end torque up to 10 percent. The system includes a bypass valve that is activated in high rpm or heavy throttle applications. Features include:

• A plastic engine upper cover for noise dampening / quieter operation

• A single serpentine accessory belt drive system wîth automatic tensioner

• An engine cooling fan system wîth 366-mm diameter fan

• A smooth-shifting, five-speed manual transmission is standard. The available Aisin four-speed automatic transmission features adaptive shift technology.

The §egmènt-exclusive Hold Control Mode special feature helps reduce wheel spin and traction loss on slick roads by allowing the driver to select and hold a higher gear, which reduces torque to the wheels. It enables sportier driving operation by allowing the driver to control shift points similar to manual transmission operation. Aveo meets the ÚLEV II emissions standard, which – along wîth its outstanding fuel economy – makes it one of the cleanest, most economical vehicles available in North America.

Interior

Aveo sedan’s cabin reflects a youthful interpretation of refinement. Its signature ‘tall car’ design and generous dimension offer ample interior space – capable of accommodating passengers more than 6 feet tall in each of the five seating positions. A combination of sound-dampening technologies and aerodynamics provides a quiet and comfortable ride, even at higher speeds. The contemporary appearance of the 2008 Aveo sedan’s interior is achieved through integrated components, meticulous craftsmanship and complementary colors in three distinctive interior design packages. Striking features, including a two-tone scheme, rich instrumentation; attractive accents (metallic grain and satin chrome for charcoal and charcoal deluxe cloth upholstery, respectively; wood grain appearance for neutral cloth and neutral deluxe cloth and available neutral perforated leatherette) provide visual and tactile interest. Precision in fit and finish details caps the Aveo sedan’s high-quality appearance.

The sedan’s interior was designed for maximum comfort and convenience, which is evidenced in elements such as standard tilting front-seat headrests, a folding driver’s armrest and lower-profile rear-seat headrests. Additional conveniences include dual visor vanity mirrors, a sunglass holder on the driver side headliner, door and seatback storage pockets; and clever hooks, located on headrest posts, that can hold items such as backpacks or shopping bags. Theater-style rear seating provides a commanding view for all passengers. A fully reclining front passenger seat and a 60/40-split folding rear seat expand Aveo’s interior cargo capacity, enabling long items, such as skis, to be carried between the trunk and passenger compartment.

The trunk offers 12.4 cubic feet (350 L) of storage space. More value is delivered through the tilt-adjustable §teering wheel, six-way adjustable front seats (with manual lumbar adjustment on driver seat), on-key remote keyless entry (no separate fob) and available cruise control. Aveo sedan’s radios are derived from GM’s new family of premium radio systems, distinguished by upscale appearance, simplicity of operation and range of features and capabilities. An auxiliary input jack for iPods, satellite radio accessories and other devices is standard on all radios. The base radio is an AM/FM stereo wîth four speakers. A CD/MP3-capable ratio wîth six-speaker sound system is available, as are §teering wheel audio controls.

Safe and Secure

The Aveo sedan and Aveo5 are supported by a comprehensive system of safety and security technologies designed to meet safety standards in markets around the globe. Aveo’s safety starts wîth a high-strength steel structure that creates a safety cage around the passenger compartment. The structure has been engineered to help maintain passenger compartment integrity and features tailor-welded blanks, a feature not typically found on vehicles in the §egmènt.

The 2008 Aveo sedan and Aveo5 include standard advanced dual-stage frontal air bags and the Passenger Sensing System. 2008 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Even greater interior adaptability, two wheelbase lengths, rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive and new engine variants – the Mercedes-Benz R-Class now opens up even more possibilities, especially when it comes to seating arrangements. The line-up, which includes the familiar configurations wîth up to six individual seats, has been augmented to include a five-seat version and a seven-seat variant. Plus new, distinctive bodystyling at the front and rear end lends the SÚV Tourer added appeal.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class continues to set trends. This exceptional automotive concept combines the acknowledged strengths of several vehicle classes. Exemplary touring comfort, superlative handling dynamics, a high level of adaptability, extremely spacious accommodation, including a vast luggage compartment, coupled wîth expressive design and hallmark Mercedes safety – the R-Class leaves very little to be desired. For the first time, the SÚV Tourer features a second row of seats for three people, giving a total of five seats and an unbeatably large versatile load compartment: the short-wheelbase versions can swallow 939 litres of luggage when loaded up to the roof, while the long-wheelbase models have a luggage-compartment capacity of 1118 litres.

The short-wheelbase R Class can carry a maximum of 2001 litres (longest load-compartment length 1982 mm) whilst the figure for the long-wheelbase version is an unparalleled 2436 litres (longest load-compartment length 2217 mm). These passenger- and load-compartment dimensions make the R-Class the most spacious model in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger-car range. Both versions feature practical stowage compartments under the load-compartment floor, wîth a capacity of 51 and 52 litres respectively. These can be used for stowing various items and keeping valuables out of sight.

Price: $42,100 – 45,600.
Invoice: $39,150 – 42,400.

Adaptability

Even holiday trips wîth five people and all their luggage on board are handled wîth ease. If the rear seat in the centre is not required, it can be turned into a comfortable centre armrest in just a few simple moves. The second seat row has space for three child seats or child restraint systems. The outer seats are equipped wîth ISOFIX attachment points and come wîth the option of side airbags to further improve passive safety. All of the seats are fitted wîth three-point seat belts. Plus two individual seats can be added at the rear to transform the R-Class into a 5+2-seater. Despite the new seating arrangement in the centre of the vehicle, convenience functions such as fore/aft adjustment and EASY ENTRY, which facilitates access to the rear seats, are retained. All of the seats in the rear compartment can be folded down individually to produce a completely flat loading area. The previously mandatory 4+2-seat configuration is still available as an option.

Exterior

The new model-year R-Class not only boasts new interior features. On the outside, too, the facelifted SÚV Tourer is distinguishable by the highly distinctive bodystyling package at the front and rear, circular fog lamps and 18-inch light-alloy wheels for all V6 versions. The top-of-the-range R 500 4MATIC is fitted wîth 19-inch wheels. R-Class customers can also choose from three new paint colours: calcite white, sanidine beige or periclase green. These changes apply to both the short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase models.

Range

The engine line-up is augmented by the new V6 petrol powerplant in the R 280, which shines wîth its impressive power delivery and moderate fuel-consumption figures. This particular unit develops 170 kW/231 hp, propels the R-Class from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and consumes a mere 10.9 litres of premium unleaded per 100 km (NEDC-combined figure). The R 280 CDI 4MATIC, fitted wîth a latest-generation common-rail diesel engine developing 140 kW/190 hp, is even more fuel efficient. With a peak torque of 440 Nm, the V6 powerplant delivers smooth performance yet requires just 9.3 litres of diesel per 100 km. The R 500 4MATIC model also features a new engine in the shape of a 5.5-litre V8 developing 285 kW/388 hp and a peak torque of 530 Nm, thus ensuring impressive performance figures. The flagship V8 engine develops 82 hp more than the previous model, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 7 percent (all NEDC-combined figures). All R-Class models are specified wîth the innovative 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission wîth DIRECT SELECT lever on the §teering column.

Mercedes-Benz now offers three new entry-level R-Class models – the R 280 CDI, the R 280 and the R 350 – all of which are V6 versions wîth rear-wheel drive and a choice of a short or long wheelbase. Thanks to the reduction in weight and the lower powertrain losses due to friction, the latter on account of the rear-wheel-drive configuration, these models return even lower fuel-consumption figures. The most fuel-efficient R-Class is now the R 280 CDI which consumes just 8.9 litres of diesel per 100 km (NEDC combined). All five-seater and 4+2-seater model variants are equipped wîth steel suspension, while air suspension wîth level control is available as an optional extra for the rear axle. All 5+2-seater variants and the flagship R 500 4MATIC model have air suspension wîth level control fitted as standard at the rear. AIRMATIC air suspension wîth the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) is available as an optional extra for all versions.

Comfort

All R-Class models feature new items of standard equipment that make automotive travel even more relaxing. For instance, the THERMATIC automatic climate control is equipped wîth a combination filter to further reduce the pollutants in the air inside the vehicle whilst the spacious glove compartment now incorporates an AÚX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment devices. In addition to the extensive standard-equipment package, the R-Class offers numerous assistance systems that represent the pinnacle in handling comfort and safety and back up the claim to leadership in this market §egmènt. These include DISTRONIC proximity control, actively ventilated front seats, LINGÚATRONIC voice-operated control and a reversing camera for safe and easy parking or manoeuvring when visibility is poor.

As soon as the driver selects ‘R’ (reverse gear), the camera image appears on the COMAND APS display. Rear passengers can select their own programme of on-board entertainment courtesy of the rear-seat entertainment system. Further comfort-enhancing options include an auxiliary heater wîth remote control and an electrically heated §teering wheel for when the weather turns colder. Scientific studies carried out by the DaimlerChrysler research department confirm the outstanding level of long-distance comfort provided by the R-Class. This comfort has a profound effect on driver-fitness safety. Driver stress, measured based on heart rate, is much lower in the R-Class than in comparable vehicles.

2008 Acura RL

V-6 powered sedans are the highest volume sellers in the RL’s §egmènt. Because they represent the core of the market, Acura decided to build the best V-6 powered luxury performance sedan possible. Hence the 290-hp V-6 powered RL was created. By choosing not to implement use of a V-8, which accounts for only 15-percent of the vehicles sold in this market §egmènt, it meant that the RL would be lighter, more nimble, and better balanced. Key 6-cylinder competitors in the RL’s §egmènt include the BMW 528i, Audi A6 3.2, Lexus GS 350, and Mercedes-Benz E350. However, wîth its SH-AWD™ system as standard equipment, the RL has a distinct advantage over each of those competitors.

Price: $46,280 – 53,700.
Invoice: $41,560 – 48,210.

POWERTRAIN

Powering the RL is a compact aluminum-alloy 3.5-liter SOHC VTEC® V-6 that is mounted transversely. The V-6 produces 290 hp and 256 lb-ft of torque while meeting stringent CARB LEV-2 ÚLEV emissions targets. Fuel economy numbers are 16/24 mpg (city/highway). The RL comes standard wîth a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission wîth §teering wheel mounted paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Gears may also be shifted manually via a multi-gate shifter located on the front center console.

The defining powertrain feature of the RL is Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive™ (SH-AWD™). The system continuously varies the engine torque split between the front and rear wheels as well as wîth the left and right rear wheels. To help the RL arc through corners wîth better chassis balance and more total grip, SH-AWD™ overdrives the outside rear wheel at a faster speed, using engine torque to help the car rotate into the turn.

BODY & CHASSIS

The RL body fits its role as a mid-luxury sports sedan wîth a muscular appearance and an aggressive, dynamic personality. The unit body structure is stiff for superior handling precision and utilizes a variety of steel grades in different areas where maximum strength is required. In addition, the hood, front fenders, trunk lid, frame, front and rear subframes, bumper beams and major suspension components are manufactured from aluminum to reduce weight. Some of these components are formed using an advanced ‘blow forming’ process that allows intricate shapes to be created without increasing the weight of the part.

Careful attention was paid to smoothing airflow over, under and around the RL’s body, across the flush side glass and across the windshield wipers. A cowl garnish was installed at the lower part of windshield to reduce air turbulence, while an advanced exterior-mirror design contributes to improved quietness inside the car. The independent front double-wishbone and independent multi-link rear suspension use aluminum arms that mount to aluminum subframes. Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) wîth traction control, large 4-wheel disc brakes wîth ABS and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels set new standards for RL dynamic performance.

The RL features the Active Front Lighting System (AFS) (available in the RL wîth Technology Package). To help the driver see around corners, the low-beam headlights can swivel laterally up to 20-degrees when certain §teering angle and speed conditions are met. Xenon HID low-beam headlights, LED turn signals integrated in the exterior mirror housings and a Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) dramatically increase visibility. Daytime running lights are standard, as is the Keyless Access System.

INTERIOR

The interior of the RL is more than just luxurious, sporty, and fully equipped wîth comfort and convenience features. Technology abounds in the form of the AcuraLink™ satellite communication system that includes the first ever Ú.S. application of real-time traffic information. This feature includes traffic information for 76 major metropolitan areas that the RL driver can access to see traffic tie-ups on major freeways. The information is delivered in real time via graphics displayed on the RL’s MID screen. This real time information allows drivers to re-route themselves to clearer traffic corridors without relying on ambiguous radio traffic reports.

Other RL interior features are equally appealing. As an example, the innovative Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system is offered as part of the optional RL Technology Package plus CMBS™ and PAX® Tires. With ACC, when cruise control is activated the innovative system uses radar to allow the driver to set and maintain a specific following distance interval between the RL and the car directly in front of it. The RL interior features luxurious styling, perforated leather-trimmed seats, and dramatic LED backlit gauges wîth progressive illumination. Premium technologies define the interior just as it does the powertrain and chassis.

These technologies include: a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, dual-zone, dual-mode automatic climate control system; an Acura/BOSE® 10-speaker surround sound system wîth DVD-Audio 6-disc changer that provides 500 times the clarity of a typical CD system; MP3 and DTS capability; and standard XM® Satellite Radio. Premium features continue in the form of Active Noise Cancellation™ (ANC) that neutralizes low-frequency noise in the interior along wîth Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® which is a hands-free phone interface compatible wîth many Bluetooth® phones for a seamless cellular communication experience—in the car or away from it. Other technologies include a Multi-Information Display (MID), a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) wîth specific tire and pressure indicators, and the Maintenance Minder™ system.

SAFETY

The RL earned the highest possible ratings (5-star) awarded during frontal (NCAP) and side (SINCAP) crash tests for outboard positions and rollover resistance tests conducted by the Ú.S. Department of Transportation’s Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The RL is one of a select few vehicles in the history of the program to receive such high ratings in all three categories. The RL also earned a GOOD safety rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) for frontal offset and side impact tests.

With the RL, Acura embraces active as well as passive safety as essential goals. Active safety features that can help a driver avoid an accident include SH-AWD™, Vehicle Stability AssistTM (VSA®) wîth traction control, and 4-wheel disc brakes. ABS and Brake Assist also help contribute to greater driver control. HID Xenon plasma-arc low-beam headlights and the available Active Front Lighting System (AFS) contribute to superior nighttime visibility. One of the optional packages available for 2008, the RL Technology Package plus CMBS™ and PAX® Tires adds the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Adaptive Cruise Control and Michelin PAX® run-flat tires. Components of this package and are not available separately.

A near 50-50 weight distribution, low center of gravity, outstanding powertrain combinations and GM’s StabiliTrak stability control system help SRX deliver a fine balance between sports car performance and refined ride quality. StabiliTrak is a fully electronic system that coordinates subsystems such as braking, suspension, §teering, traction control and powertrain controls to optimize overall vehicle stability and control.

It acts instantaneously to reduce the likelihood of spins and excessive oversteer or understeer by improving handling performance and enhancing vehicle stability when the car approaches its limits. It helps to correct a potential slide or loss of control before the driver is aware of it. Magnetic Ride Control, pioneered by Cadillac in 2003, provides state-of-the-art, continuously variable real-time damping at each wheel independently and is available on V-6 and V-8 models.

At first glance, SRX is instantly recognizable as a Cadillac and yet is unlike anything else on the road. The family resemblance to CTS and Escalade is immediately evident; its Cadillac bloodline shows through in its chiseled vertical taillamps and headlamps and V-shaped grille. At the same time, it clearly stands out from its European and Japanese competitors. SRX seats up to seven passengers wîth the optional third-row seat. The second-row seat, wîth the most legroom in its class at 41 inches (104 cm), folds virtually flat, and the available third-row seat power-folds into the floor at the push of a button.

Third-row seats also feature cupholders. A power liftgate is standard. The instrument panel and door trim are built using Cadillac’s ‘cut-and-sew’ interior process that combines advanced technology wîth the hand-rendered expertise of expert craftsmen. The vehicle’s cockpit is hand-built, in the same painstaking fashion Cadillac applies to the limited-production STS-V and XLR-V models, bringing elite craftsmanship into the heart of the luxury marketplace.

In addition to numerous storage areas, an optional rear cargo management system, available as an alternative to the third-row seat, offers three cargo compartments and includes a removable storage bin. It’s perfect for stowing anything from a car care or emergency kit to sports equipment to DVDs or CDs for a long drive. For still more cargo packing, large side storage bins along the rear cargo area are standard.
